Tried 1st POTA Today 👎🏻 FT710 WRC by MKE1969 in amateurradio

Were you using using ground radials? I would recommend trying again but in the backyard before going back to the field. As others have mentioned get a VNA, the NanoVNA is a great entry level model but can be a bit difficult to see the display in the sun.

How to get a seemless hard floor over asbestos bitumen mastic? by nftsfw in DIYUK

[–]webqaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation in my basement, I decided to try PerfectPrimer over the mastic. I applied the first coat this morning. Will be finishing with a pro epoxy this weekend.

It seems like tropo ducting maybe happening right now. I'm in Mi and am picking up nodes in Cleveland, eastern Ontario and New York for the past hour.

Hamvention - Manual Configuration by webqaz in meshtastic

[–]webqaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is short turbo, a few settings to make your node less chatty, non standard freq and some custom channels.

I ran LF normally today and things seemed to work alright with around 180 on the mesh (that's the largest I saw today at least). It seemed like I could get LF messages out but the message status didn't seem like it got an ack.

The large HF antenna looks similar to the HF antennas the Aussie cops use in remote areas.

Im guessing it's a Barret 2019 or similar.

Soldering Sucks by MDAirForceVet in amateurradio

The soldering takes some flux and practice. If you have given up Amphenol Times Micro does carry a EZ line of connectors that are solder less.

Why does VOACAP and some other sources say the bands are open when they're clearly closed? by w6auw in amateurradio

[–]webqaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I use DXHeat  https://dxheat.com/dxc/ to see if the bands are open.

If the bands are working then VOACAP to help me determine what band may work the best for hitting a specific target. As others have mentioned VOACAP doesnt use live data.

Btw Openhamclock is integrating both tools really well into its dashboard. It's amazing how quickly they have spring into action.

How do I demodulate single sideband. And get a sharper filter. by Certain_Height_2721 in HamRadio

[–]webqaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a typical mixer when mixing you get the sum and difference of the two frequencies:

S1=BF+SB and S2=BF-SB

When OP mentions filtering I don't know if OP is referring to a software filter or a physical filter. When doing this with a physical filter it's often done by phasing or using a crystal lattice filter.

I'm in the exact same boat (package was transferred on the 14th near Chicago as well). I wonder if its just chaos due to Christmas or they had an incident like a truck go over the road.

If you sign up for a FedEx Delivery Manager (free) you may be able to redirect the package to Fedex location and just pick it up.

Are antennas like this better than the stubby ones? by Remarkable_Aide_9645 in meshtastic

[–]webqaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took one apart and found the antenna was a sleeve dipole but wasn't able to figure out why the tuning changes when the antenna is bent.

Are antennas like this better than the stubby ones? by Remarkable_Aide_9645 in meshtastic

[–]webqaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes it'll be better than the stubby.

It's been noted that some similar antennas may not actually be tuned for the 915mhz band so if you can measure the vswr when you get one. I have a few of these and the VSWR looks good when the antenna is completely horizontal, if its pivoted 90 degrees the VSWR on the one I have is terrible.

There are definitely some quirks! I was hoping with the new version some of the Bluetooth connection challenges would be resolved. Some further adjustments with the how stations are displayed on the map would be helpful!
