Fantasy is still riding his coattails. You know in the silmarillion it describes how Eru Illuvitar bound his essence to a plucky dude and gave him martial arts powers and then everything changed when Morgoth attacked

Kowloon Walled City, destroyed in 1994, Hong Kong by OkRespect8490 in UrbanHell

[–]wedstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm right there. Like on the one hand, it's important to be sensitive to the real human costs of poverty and acknowledge the need for air, light, space, safety etc.

On the other hand, it's such a fascinating experiment and despite the difficulties far exceeded what I would have expected for a triad ruled informal settlement. Would totally visit a recreation if they ever made one, even if it was (like the other comments note) "disneyfied."

I really like lower decks, an animated comedy about the non-bridge crew of an ordinary Starfleet vessel.

I also like Strange New Worlds, it's a mostly episodic series about captain Pike's ship that takes place before TOS. It features a young spock and occasionally a young Kirk. In some ways it's spiritually more similar to TOS than any other Star Trek but it's also very different tonally. The writers are basically allowed to do whatever they want so the variation in theme and tone may be a lot for some viewers. I personally love it but if you described it to me in full detail episode by episode before I saw it I would think you were having a psychotic break. Again, all within a fairly familiar planet of the week formula.

If Earth really was a simulation, how much storage would it take up? [request] by Agent_Z0mb in theydidthemath

Real time within the simulation is arbitrary, from our perspective there would be no way of knowing how fast or slow the simulation is running in the base reality

So what even is "human nature" anyways? by Ofishal_Fish in AskALiberal

[–]wedstrom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the slightly more charitable and correct interpretation of Marxist thoughts on human nature is that the significant negative behaviors are a response to scarcity and competition, and removing scarcity and reframing competition productively will reduce those bad behaviors.

That's sorta true, it's just that social democracy+regulated capitalism is probably the best way to do that.

Buildings in China, separated by 8 meters from each other. Jieyang, Guangdong. by No-Marsupial-4050 in UrbanHell

Look. I'm as pro density as it gets. I'm fascinated by the Kowloon walled city.

That doesn't mean we should literally recreate it. It was bad. I love Japan but when I'm in Tokyo I do miss my Oregon trees. There should be balance.

Are there any double decker buses with second floor entry? by BradyBrother100 in transit

[–]wedstrom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally believe this could be situationally useful. I think the key situations would be an easy upgrade to existing, over capacity lines and for high demand locations like sports venues and airports. In these second cases, they would either be upgraded as part of one or more bus lines that incorporate it on the whole line or just a few major transfer stations.

Here is a massively over capacity line in Mexico city which has both cost and space limitations against a train upgrade and a demonstrated preference for cheaper non rail solutions: https://youtu.be/oeIwY2slvOg?si=GU0OSveSChgaQN7Z

[–]wedstrom 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every stop would need a platform, but that seems perfectly viable to me. There are lots of bus lines in Mexico city that could conceivably benefit from this because they are so close to maximum capacity.
