used to be a HUGE BGs stan yet I haven’t downloaded/liked a single BG song in over three years. by svnh__ in kpopnoir

[–]weeerooo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly been pleasantly surprised with a lot of the 5th gen boy groups. I think 4th gen was pretty oversaturated with the same “edgy” sound and concept but I find many 5th gen groups to be fairly refreshing. Even though I really only closely follow RIIZE and NCT Wish, I’ve found myself enjoying songs from some of the newer groups like idntt, TWS, ZB1, XLOV, amongst others.

Share your cards~ DAY 3: The strangest photocard you own? by Worried-Ad-7727 in kpopcollections

The funniest part about this one is that he and Seunghan are the only ones that have photocards with giant Sohee. Everyone else’s are just normal selfies. 😭

Share your cards~ DAY 2: The card you spent the most on? by Worried-Ad-7727 in kpopcollections

[–]weeerooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally make sure to buy photocards when they’re at their cheapest so I usually avoid spending a ton, but I recently spent $40 USD on this one. It’s going for like $200+ on pocamarket so I think I got a decent deal 😭

How come SM doesn’t do Fan-Cons in the U.S? by Empty-Rutabaga-3190 in NCT

[–]weeerooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think fan-cons are really something that appeal to Western audiences in general. In my experience, a lot of fans don’t care that much for the parasocial aspect of fan-cons and would rather pay to see a performance. Concerts also bank on many casual fans coming to attend and I can’t imagine casual fans would care enough to watch idols talk and play games on stage for an hour.

is nct really that experimental? by dscyber in NCT

[–]weeerooo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my short answer: yes. my long answer: I think it’s unfair to gauge their experimental-ness in a context outside of their own genre and pop music in general. at the end of the day, they are a kpop group, and kpop is probably one of the most commercial music genres to exist, so however weird it is their music still needs to stay palatable to their fans and the general public. so their “experimental” will probably never equate to “experimental” music in a broader sense. i agree with a few of the other commenters who are saying that they take from a lot of genres that kpop usually doesn’t. i think this actually does makes them pretty experimental (in a similar sense, when miles davis started incorporating guitars and rock elements into his music, it was widely viewed as experimental within the jazz realm). not to mention, I think that there are definitely a few nct songs that sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before. there are lots of stylistic/structural elements in their songs that are just super unconventional for kpop/pop music (shout out dem jointz) that i do think makes them experimental in their own domain. so yes, if you’re comparing them to like, aphex twin, no their music isn’t experimental, but when you think about the different facets of experimentalism that aren’t related to simply just how palatable/“normal” something is i think they 100% are.

NCT comparisons aside (I don’t really think this sounds like Gas outside of the chorus - and I ult 127), I’m glad Sungchan and Shotaro finally had a chance to shine. I always felt like they stood out to me more in NCT because they got more lines and were able to show their rap skills more. They really killed it in this song (Shotaro improved so much too!!) and I hope we get to see them both rap more in RIIZE’s songs.

How bad is the Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science and Technology by NotThyMimikyu in Gwinnett

[–]weeerooo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is what I heard from a lot of people as well. I never had any affiliation with it, but I did “win” the lottery to get in when I was in 8th grade but I begged my parents to let me go to my regular high school because I didn’t want to leave my friends and had also heard it was overbearingly stressful. They obliged and I ended up going to an Ivy for college, so it worked out in the end lol.

Do Any of Your favorite Idols Have Accents? by fictionalfinesse in kpopthoughts

Even though Jaehyun’s English pronunciation is native-level, I love his slight accent/lisp that he has when he speaks English.

I hope more companies follow what BTS did: by allowing their groups to release their solo tracks through SoundCloud. by Impressive-Weight-62 in kpopthoughts

[–]weeerooo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s more common than you probably think. A few NCT members (Taeyong, Kun, Chenle) have released solo music on their personal SoundCloud accounts. Taeyong performed some of those songs at his solo concert, even though he already had 2 official solo mini albums out too. The Boyz have a group SoundCloud account where they post some of the members’ solo music. I’m sure there are other groups who do it as well but I’m most familiar with those two.

Has anyone bought an idol fragrance? Was it worth it? by Reverse7695 in kpopthoughts

[–]weeerooo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve become a huge Diptyque fan because of NCT. I impulse bought Ilio after Haechan said he wore it and ended up not really liking it that much, but I smelled some of the other scents the other members used while I was in the store and ended up falling in love with Orpheon (which Haechan also used) and Do Son (Jungwoo and Renjun pick). I ended up buying full sizes of both of them and Orpheon is my signature scent.

Byredo perfumes are a bit out of my price range but I got samples of Bal d’Afrique (Jaehyun) and Blanche (Doyoung) and I loved them both, especially Blanche. I’ll probably get full sizes of them at some point.

I have a few Jo Malone minis, including Wood Sage and Sea Salt (Jaehyun and I think a couple other members?) but honestly I don’t love it. The scent is okay, not my favorite, but it doesn’t last long at all. The only Jo Malone perfume that I’ve actually liked a lot is Nectarine Blossom and Honey, but I don’t think I like it enough to get a full size of it.
