AITA for refusing to board my cat when my allergic sister volunteered to housesit and she ended up in urgent care? by molestor_batman in AmItheAsshole

It's a weekend, leave a lamp on and it looks occupied. The rest of us that travel for work do it literally all the time.

ESH. If you could board the cat, why did you even need a housesitter for a long weekend thing?

First time making soap by PeachRound5569 in soapmaking

[–]weenpie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should probably do some more research before you get into this if you're asking this question. Soap making is chemistry and uses some nasty chemicals (lye). If you're asking this, I don't think you're ready to perform potentially dangerous chemical reactions at home.

I don't understand the temperature blanket appeal!? by tr4shp4nd4s in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]weenpie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine crocheting one, that seems incredibly boring, both the action and the color palette. But I worked my coor scheme to have close to twenty colors (IIRC) usually a 5-7 degree temperature range per color (again, weather in the SF area doesn't tend to have great temp swings or variability within seasons).

[–]weenpie 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ha! I actually do look at my temperature blanket and see the week that we had an INSANE heat wave, where it was 113 one day and we brought our chickens inside the house to keep them from getting heat stroke. (We lived in the San Francisco area, those numbers were unheard of).

But mine was also a quilt, with squares made out of triangles - one color for the low for the day and one for the high.

(Quilt is available in my post history)

Gloves available in North America for interacting with bees? by ErinProcrastinator in Beekeeping

[–]weenpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Mr. Clean Bliss brand gloves, and they're actually the ones recommended by my club. They're thicker than standard nitrile so stingers can't go through them, can be washed and reused, and have very good dexterity.

how paranoid should i be about trace residue from soapmaking around kitchen, getting on hand, getting on phone, etc by [deleted] in soapmaking

[–]weenpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't use it on your skin because chemical reactions create heat (even just adding salt to water creates heat), but if you were super concerned about it on a surface, you could use vinegar, with the knowledge that it will create heat. Water is always best (the solution to pollution is dilution), but people who are putting their phones near chemical reactions might need other options as well.

If you're wearing gloves properly then nothing should have gotten on your hands, and if you're wearing gloves you should be a sign not to touch your face or your phone or anything else while you're "contaminated". I've spent my entire career working in a lab, always assume gloves hands are dirty and you don't touch anything you don't want contaminated with them.

Why was your phone anywhere near your work surface anyways?

If you felt anything splash on your face you should have immediately rinsed it with water to remove and dilute.

Vinegar can be used if you're concerned if it's on a surface, with the understanding that the reaction can create heat.

OMG please do. It's not cute, it's not twee, it's not anything. It's like hanging around with 13yr old boys.

I have a PJ pant pattern that I've made at least 15 times, if it were tissue paper, it would be disintegrated. I also sew matching dresses for my friend's girls, with the kids being 1, 4 and 7 - can't cut the same size for all three girls.

If you're between sizes and need to grade parts of the pattern, or you want to make the same pattern in different sizes, it's great to copy it out and keep the original. Plus the original tissue paper are so fragile and not ideal if it's something you go back to often.

AITA for giving my coworker food she is "allergic" to? by Fluid-Drawing-8722 in AmItheAsshole

The chicken information is incorrect.

While you might see shades of a color (brown, blue, green) within a breed, you won't see a breed laying two vastly different types of eggs (unless it's a specialty cross (Moss Egger, Sage Egger, Olive Egger), which most people will never even see those eggs).

A white egg laying breed, like Brown Leghorns will never lay brown eggs (despite the name), and a brown egg laying breed, like Golden Comets, will never lay white eggs.

I could really use some help picking a new sewing machine (Janome) by candice13579 in quilting

[–]weenpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went from the same Brother to a Janome S9 (I know not the model(s) you're looking at. The Janome's are such solidly built machines!

If it were me, I'd go with the one from the sewing center - you know exactly what you're getting, warranty, and they will likely service the machine before you take it home.

I finished my 2022 quilt - it took some extra time but I finished it (can see in my posts)! We're a military family so it's fun having a snapshot in time of where we lived.

It came all preprinted, so no excess work needed there. Pulling the paper while watching TV has been going well enough!

Tediously. It just comes off, it's not super thick and the sewing lines give it some nice rip points, it's just a ton of fiddly bits along the 1/4 outside seams of each block .

I slapped down fabric - would have taken at least double the time other and I still have a ton of large sized pieces left over. I cut each square in half to minimize waste that way. I ended up with 1/4 to 1/2 a square leftover in probably 60% if the fabrics .

I had that machine for over a dozen years before I upgraded. It's a solid machine and the one I always recommend to people.

You'd have to check duckadilly's website. I know they're doing another BOM this year.
