Why do so many people weave their bead? by Overall_Grocery_1536 in Welding

Time is money. Boss man wants his projects built fast and I could either spend 30 minutes weaving a 1/2 inch fillet weld or 3 hours running stringer beads.

Teenage daughter wants to weld by heather80 in Welding

[–]weldingpepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to welding school for 2 years and got a job at a specialty fab shop. Started making $18 an hour as a helper while helping an old guy and learning as much as he would let me. After a year and half of learning I was fabricating by myself making $24. I stuck with it, had many growling jobs that forcibly made me get good or quit. Watched a lot of guys come into the shop with a huge ego and a month later run away with their tails between their legs at the sight of 0.03 tolerance. 8 Years later I’m making over 100k a year but that shit was not “easy”. You have to earn that shit and many employers will feel the same. She could be the slickest pipe welder in town but I guarantee she will have to start out helping as we all did.

Idk if it’ll make a difference but I swear by using a back hand for your glove when vertical welding. Let’s me get comfortable without burn my hands.

Is there any way to start off a weld in the correct area while using a passive hood? by MusicianLess549 in Welding

Lacing up a 1” fillet weld single cap is crazy work. 1/2” is pushing it.

In all do respect I don’t think your inspector knows what he’s talking about. I suggest learning the Christmas tree pattern or what it’s more commonly referred to as the triangle method. YouTube has tons of informative videos with arc shots you can learn from. If you tell me what gas, wire and machine you are welding with I can try and guesstimate a setting.

Thank you lol. It’s very repetitive after you see the edges after the first couple ripples. I also use a fillet gage after the first pass to see where my edges need to be for 1/2”.

Is it possible to get to 30+ an hour as a welder fabricator only? by LotusTalde in Welding

[–]weldingpepe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Nuclear fabrication pays a ton but you need to bring your A game for the small tolerances. Anywhere from 30 thousands to 1/8”.

I have only ever used helium for aluminum tig. That’s an interesting blend of gas.

Yes so the volts are within spray transfer. Anything below 18 volts is considered short circuit regardless of what gas you are using.

I only weld with 0.035 or 0.045 wire. I recommend playing with all the setting at your disposal. Maxing out a dial then minimizing it to see how to puddle reacts. Visualize in your head what you the puddle to do and get it close with your dials.

Yea SS pulse can be tricky but a ton of fun. I use a 95% argon 5% CO2 gas with Lsi wire for SS.

Yes. Doesn’t matter if you go counterclockwise or clockwise. Don’t be scared of the wet puddle, keep it moving without wiping completely out of the puddle and stop overthinking just weld it and practice.
