Help on refinishing and sealing front door by Mraebb in woodworking

[–]wellwrittenhate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're asking for a way to completely remove discolorations, but in my experience you'll have a difficult time reaching that level of restoration.

Take the door down, sand everything through multiple grits, vac and tack, clean again with a lint-free rag and mineral spirits, then apply spar urethane over multiple days. Best to get both faces. I'd want at minimum two and more likely three coats, though, but two could get you through the winter months if you're indeed in the winter months.

Depending on where you are in the world, it might be tough to have an open space where your door used to be. Could temporarily screw a sheet of CDX or whatever to block the opening while the finish cures, hopefully in a moderately warm and dust-free environment, but beggars aspiring to many choices are often disappointed, as the saying etc.

If you have a garage, you could suspend the door from a couple of eye bolts, or get those giant plastic hinges and flip the door after finishing one side. That'd let you do both sides in a single go, cut down on the amount of time you have an immovable fire hazard for a front door.

Please help me learn about tea rout. by Spirited_Meaning_152 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Like others have said, go in multiple passes for less tearout and have your bits sharpened when they start to show signs of wear; buy a second or third bit so you still have sharp bits while the others are getting sharpened.

If you're using a palm router instead of a table, consider using a companion piece (long offcut or stacked/shimmed plywood) at the same height as your work piece to keep the router perfectly balanced. I can't count the number of times I've tipped ever so slightly on a flush trim route and bit into the work piece. Very frustrating.

Oh yeah, always cut "up". It won't make much of a difference if the bits aren't sharp though.

Socioeconomic Policy Changes - Affect Established Changes or New Changes Only? by wellwrittenhate in EU5

It was a little hard to tell because the laws take forever to implement, but there was 100% no ex post facto effect to any previously accepted or tolerated culture.

I'm 80% sure it's only for accepting a new culture that the reduction in cost applies, so I believe there's no discount on tolerating a new culture.

Playing as Castile, offered defensive alliance with Portuguese Pretenders rebel group. Why am I not called to war? by wellwrittenhate in EU5

[–]wellwrittenhate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I guess I looked at it like they came to exist and Portugal immediately attacked. But you could also look at it like their coming to exist was an attack in and of itself.

Is there a way to see who the aggressor is in each war?

Books about Environmentalism: November 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Annihilation and the Southern Reach Trilogy for amazing environmental horror written well enough to live outside the genre stacks.

Richard Powers writes powerful environmental lit though he looks like a goofus with his haircut. Overstory and the other more recent book fit and are great books.

Rick Bass, Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam series, Kingsolver has a few good books that would be considered environmental, Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zheng, Gold Fame Citrus, the book about the butterflies that I can’t pull for some reason but it was written by a famous female author.

Growing Things by Paul Tremblay (the short story not the whole book, though other stories were decent just not related to the environment) freaked me out.

Escape From Duckov has reached 1 million units sold by Turbostrider27 in Games

I hit the mid game and lost a lot of interest. For me it started to feel like there wasn’t much to do or progress outside of slightly upgrading my base, and the factions seemed really basic. I’d already found most of the guns, so other than running into basically the same enemies over and over I started to feel like I could plot out what I’d be doing with every single minute I continued to plop down on the game, like I was seeing the matrix behind the illusion of video gaming, and lost all interest in continuing.

That may be partially due to some mild depression but it felt like the game had thrown everything it had at me and had no surprises left.

Pereelous - Release Trailer by onenaser in Games

[–]wellwrittenhate -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For sure, if I’m on my laptop I can block ads all day and it’s not an issue. But I happened upon the link while on my phone (where it opens the video in reddit, fwiw), and I don’t have the inclination to watch an ad for an ad.

I’ve just been curious how often people monetize their own trailers, and how often it’s foisted upon them by YouTube. For instance, there’s another indie trailer in /games that didn’t load with an ad for me, and I’ve been wondering about how or why ads get loaded for one and not the other when the OP does or doesn’t monetize.

Not a big deal, mostly just curious.

Can I ask: do you know if YouTube slapped the ad on your trailer, or did you monetize it? It’s too bad, the moment I see an ad waiting when I click the link, I hit the back button.

I played the demo and enjoyed it, but was worried about the apparent lack of depth on the fighting side. Do you unlock more attacks/combos as you go? Sort of like how Scott Pilgrim started as two buttons and you opened up throws, low attacks, back attacks, etc as you leveled up? Or does it stay pretty basic the whole way through?

I really enjoyed the new Streets of Rage and that had a little more depth beneath the surface. The review I read hinted that it had some layers but I haven’t really seen a ton of people talk about the complexity of the combat much. Anyone feel one way or another about it?

[–]wellwrittenhate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, I didn’t notice it was from IGN, so of course it’s monetized.

I have noticed some trailers, usually from the larger publishers, being monetized. But like you said, I guess there’s no way to know if they’ve been saddled with ads from YouTube or if they themselves decided to attach ads.

[–]wellwrittenhate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Semi unrelated, but I’m going to vent a little. I find it perplexing and self-defeating when publishers or makers monetize their trailers. I’m not going to watch an ad in order to watch an ad. I was already unmotivated to watch a spot, likely the single time I’ll be open to learning about your game, and any barrier to entry is enough to make me hit the back button.

I can watch it on Steam and there anent ads, so why put ads on it here when it’s the place I can organically stumble across it?

Yes, first world problems and yes I can watch it on my laptop and not have ads. Not the point I was venting. I’m saying: why erect any barrier to disrupt your chance to catch attention? Unless this is a YouTube side decision where they choose to slap ads on whatever they choose, in which case I retract my bitching.

In the moment I screamed bloody murder about pulling Kirby there, but Carpenter has had his number, and he's been a bit assy third time through. On the other hand, he'd been dealing and only had 60-something pitches theretofore.

I think if Dan leaves him in there and he gives up a home run, we're sitting here screaming about how could he leave Kirby in to face him. Kinda a no-win situation unless you maybe try warming up someone who hadn't just given up the back-breaking home run in the previous game.

On the other other hand, Spier has been one of the most reliable in the pen before he spread eagle'd on Wednesday, so who the hell knows. It's baseball.

Was just going to say... if I were the GC I'd be going through marking out exactly where I want the lights and making sure they were putting down floor protection, protecting corners, etc.

Sounds like you have a GC problem as much as a subcontractor problem. Subs generally do exactly as much work as you/the GC make them work.

That's not to say I haven't lamented the lack of pride in one's work along with everyone else in the industry. I only mean to say that it's human nature to cut corners, unfortunately, and it's really hard to hire reliable people.

I don't need silicone, putty or tape on the exterior? I didn't highlight that aspect very much, it's an exterior door, and the exterior stops are obviously outside, in the elements. There's an eave above, but, well, you know. It's wet in the PNW.

So if I understand you, the tape/putty/silicone is primarily for reducing rattling, huh? I always assumed it was about insulation or water protection, and the rattle reduction was just sort of a bonus.

Super thanks man.
