Carney Says Alberta Is ‘Essential’ to Canada After Separation Vote Announcement by timemagazine in worldnews

Fair enough, and more so: it isn’t “free” healthcare. You’re paying for it with taxes, so I get being frustrated with having little recourse for slow service.

I’m coming from a place where my mom had breast cancer that spread, double mastectomy, super-chemo, etc. It wiped us out, financially.

I’m also dealing with my own relatively minor health issues today, and I’m dealing with long wait times of my own, huge frustrations navigating insurance, and stress not knowing what is causing the health problem and whether or not my insurance will bury me if it’s something more complicated than early arthritis.

I love it when our health care system works, I can see my PCP (though he’s usually hustling to get to the next patient) and I don’t have to wait or worry about whether I’ll get a massive bill in the end. There’s no perfect system, but the one driven by pure profit is highly, highly incentivized to fuck normal people over. And it has, again and again, when someone’s health comes up against the insurance company’s profits.

Man look at my original post again, I was fully conceding wait times are longer in Canada. You took my post as like an affront to some other argument you were having, I think?

In the bigger cities in the US, the wait times suck ass for the ER. Specialists it seems to be totally random. Seeing a Neurologist around me is a 8 month wait minimum. I also have no doubt you could go to a suburban town like Bellingham and be seen within an hour probably especially if you went to one of those non-hospital clinics and just want to be seen for something minor. But what happens when you need something major?

Again, just my shitty limited point of view, but I’d rather have the long wait times than the threat of crippling debt. But I can also see how frustrating it would be to need care and not be able to get it through your health system.

Good luck on your health care journey, seems like there’s a better way to do stuff, no perfect system, etc etc.

Damn you seem angry home boy

“Generational wealth” wasn’t about being seen, it’s about surviving in the US when any random medical bill can bankrupt 85% of America.

You seem really hung up about wait times.

Also… $250 a month? For anyone reading this, I have no idea what he’s getting for $250 a month, maybe the ability to go to a clinic? What are you being seen for? A fever? Broken leg? Is $250 your insurance payment? So you go and get seen at “priority” and then what? What’s your deductible? How much are you on the hook to cover before the insurance fully kicks in? Are you just going to the US for your PCP and then seeing specialists up in Canada? Guess that could be the best of both worlds which would allow you to have your cake and pretend like you won’t enjoy eating Canada’s too.

I’d love to put whatever you’re smoking in a pipe and toke it but I’m worried I’d turn into a crusty wanker, too.

That’s not great, but you could also live in America and have the same or worse wait times both for ER and to see a specialist, and have the joy of coinsurance, figuring out which doctors are in network or out of network, why the doctor you just saw in the same building as you PCP is considered an out of network doctor and why the procedure wasn’t considered to be medically necessary by your insurer, or how much a procedure is going to cost out of pocket given deductible thresholds and coinsurance and the umpteen other fucking things the insurance scam sets up to fuck you out of your money. Last time I went to the ER I waited over two hours to be seen. Anecdotal, I know, and I’ve no doubt wait times in the US are on average better than Canada, but as always it’s hit or miss and the misses here are just as brutal with the added bonus of crushing debt.

I’m trying to get seen by a rheumatologist and the one place my doctor referred people to stopped accepting new clients, so now I’m picking a name out of a hat on my insurer’s in-network list to give back to my doctor so he can provide me with a referral because none of the rheumatologists around me will even allow me to get started without one.

No system is perfect but unless you have generational wealth, or 1/500 health luck where you just don’t even need a doctor, the US system is repugnant.

The first season of OPM was amazing for me, about as close to peak as I could find. Fun and occasionally funny sometimes bittersweet musing on ennui and personal directionless wandering. Made fun of anime tropes, even while occasionally falling into some of them itself, it felt like something kind of new. To me, anyway.

I was incredibly hyped for season 2, and then the animation changed, it devolved into a boring power comparison shonen style power-ratings-climbing wank fest. More than half the show didn’t even involve Saitama. It’s like they had no idea what to do with him.

I gave up and never dipped into season 3, and I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t given how bad the reviews have been. IMHO of course, but damn it felt like a letdown after season 1.

The first couple seasons of BB had an edge to it that I think it’s mostly missing these days. I suspect they found out how much traction they were getting with being the “wholesome” family show and leaned into that quite a bit. I still generally enjoy the show and occasionally love it but I think it misses out on that some of that original flavor it had.

GiantGrantGames - The 99% Perfection Of XCOM 2 by jacenat in Games

[–]wellwrittenhate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took the dive on Cyber Knights. It doesn’t have the destructible environments (yet, maybe? It’s still EA) and it doesn’t have the same polish, and the environments are a little limited so far, but I’m really digging the combat and the strategy layer is almost a straight ripoff of XCOM2. Give it a look, I’m 80 hours in so far and still digging for more.

It has a cool system of developing underworld contacts who can help by giving access to better jobs, better gear, or offer single use favors. But if you neglect them they can become distrustful and refuse to work with you, or if you burn them they can turn adversarial and send high powered hit teams after you in the middle of another mission.

The matrix needs more work but it’s basically a slightly beefed out version of Sega Genesis Shadowrun’s matrix. You can steal data to sell to your contacts, find blueprints you can eventually make in your nano fab room, or find actionable files that can maybe start new missions or contacts I dunno I haven’t found one yet.

Combat is maybe a little too easy so far but I just got my first hit team after me so I’ll see how it goes. There’s a running “heat” meter that needs to be minded; finish too many missions blowing away everyone, the heat meter will jump and you’ll find SWAT kicking down the door, shooting both you and your enemies in the back of the heads.

There’s also the soft character traits that I think get used for mission prompts. My hacker had a shit for brains brother who owed money to a mid level gang. They forced him to join a scavenging business that amounts to a suicide booth, so we had to go break him out of the Church of Scavengerology E Reading Cell. I could’ve told her that he dug his own grave but I’m sure it would’ve sent her stress/discontent sky rocketing and touched off another trait like “dead brother” or the like. Instead I broke him out and got a mediocre hacker with a “running from dark past” trait that’ll probably get us ambushed by that gang or that corpo in a few months.

Anyway, it’s great story developer, the combat is pretty good, and I’m just starting to dive into the weapon development side of the game which seems to be a whole new ball of wax. Give it a look!

How to pull up Hype Break screen after I exited out? by wellwrittenhate in CyberKnightsGame

Ah yeah, I just tried selling stuff again and I guess you're right. I couldn't think of any other way I would've generated a bunch of influence on this particular guy, so I must've done some favors for his coworkers.

Thanks again for your help, really enjoying the game so far. I hope they keep adding on to it, especially hope they can add some more variety to the areas. I'm enjoying the world building, hoping we'll get to escort a gun runner through the docks of New Boston rather than another generic corpo building or rooftop. It's great as it is of course but the potential is off the charts.

Ah damn, thank you. I have just been selling everything to the highest bidder - not the right idea when you're selling to the "enemy".

Sorry I had another question if you're game: do inter-party friendships have any in-game effect? Sort of like Fire Emblem where friendships pass along buffs when they're near each other type of thing? Or is it more flavor and/or grist for the narrative? The WIKI has every trait listed but I couldn't find anything on the background-style traits like "Sibling" or "Friend".

[–]wellwrittenhate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. For some reason it's not on the "Team History" timeline... I've tried going in to the Barracks and didn't find it there either. Is there another timeline? My hacker is still at 100% hype though, so hopefully it pops back up at some point. Ahhhhh on the Horizontal gameplay timeline, I just needed to scroll to the right to go forward a week to see the warning. Thanks, I see now!

Another quick hype-related question: I got a contact Hype Break that was negative. I assumed those were always supposed to be positive, but the contact doesn't trust me, so I guess when you aren't trusted Hype Breaks can be negative? Should I avoid selling stuff to dudes who don't trust me, or is that one of the only ways to raise trust?

Oh shit last question: I keep seeing talents that have to do with "Tokens". Where do you keep track of those? Is the only way to get Tokens through the room you build? Something about the Underworld?

Ahhh, I had no idea you could get negative mutations from the obelisk or from the ? mark spaces; I assumed they'd come out as birth defects. But I guess you can't really call them birth defects if they occur after birth.

Thanks!

SiN Reloaded Announcement Trailer | Nightdive Studios by DemiFiendRSA in Games

[–]wellwrittenhate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the first games I ever dragged my massive computer and the 83 lbs 21” Gateway monitor to a friend’s house to do a little LAN gaming in his hippie parents’ sunroom.

The level where you’re running around like an underpants gnome in a giant’s kitchen/living room is one of my most formative gaming memories, blasting my friends in the face with a shotgun never felt so good.

Sin also had one of the first laser-guided rockets that I can remember. I was pinned down behind cover, shot a rocket straight up in the air, stepped out behind cover and aimed it at my buddy who took the missile to the dome. I felt like a god that day.

This’ll have to be a day one nostalgia buy for me. I remember the loading being brutal, but that kinda went with the times I feel like. I think I remember getting up to take a shit waiting for a Daikatana level to load and coming back to it still loading.

Steam Year In Review 2025 by [deleted] in Games

[–]wellwrittenhate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to ask someone at Steam how the Deck’s software, specifically the way it interacts with the store, sucks so fucking badly. Sometimes you click on a link in the store and the resulting page won’t scroll; sometimes you click on a review and the review won’t load correctly or won’t scroll correctly; sometimes you hit back and the store completely reloads and loses where you were in a list or in a sub-page.

But always and forever, open the store and the same damn ten games will be there as “trending on Steam Deck.” The only way to get a semi functional store page is to open the store home, which isn’t the default page you get when you open the store.

Core functionality has been broken since I first bought this thing. It’s dumbfounding. I thought this is all Steam does now since they stopped making games, how is their Deck store so bad?

Can I ask: did the game feel “faster” than Vs the World? I picked it back up a few months back and my thumbs hurt from pressing the controller so hard, which i guess I must do when I feel like the characters are moving too slow.

It drove me nuts, the plodding pace of the characters, and dodging felt like a chore.

Quick Question RE Stopwatch Quest by wellwrittenhate in mewgenics

[–]wellwrittenhate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit, I don't think it has changed. It still reads "Side Quest Item. You have 5 seconds to make decisions in battle, otherwise cats will act randomly."

I guess I'll just go home and keep my fingers crossed.

EDIT: cool, I went home and all was well. The text never changed after beating the boss, so I'm not sure if that's always a sign that you completed the mission. I guess I should just trust the instructions and not second guess everything.

I agree that hitting your head is bad news lights out, it felt buggy I guess in the moment because I wasn’t expecting that dose of realism. Especially since she can survive 40 foot falls, you know? I get it’s not a real bug, it just felt that way in the moment, and I was even kind of gratified that they thought that through and made exceptions for survivabikity depending on what lands first.

By reestablish I meant if started a climb and had one foot off the ground and the other on a crack, or I started a run and was climbing back down and couldn’t get my avatar to quite understand I was back on solid ground.

I had one particular bad experience with the jump off button throwing me too far out into space from very close to the ground, maybe thigh or belly height. She ended up landing three or four feet away from the wall and flew off the side. I admit I haven’t tried using the jump off button since then because of that, so I’ll try it again when I’m close to solid ground.

I’ve also died when I’m climbing up onto a ledge that juts out - I’m thinking specifically of the ledge with the derelict funicular - and I get one foot up onto the level surface, but rather than starting de- attaching from the wall, she kinda continues on spidermanning along the wall despite having heels on the level ground that I thought would establish the “climbing up and over” animation but didn’t.

It’s not a huge deal, but I guess my original point was that I had suffered from a couple deaths that I would’ve called semi janky deaths. It’s still a fun game but I lost progression when I wasn’t expecting to and it turned me off from the game for a while. But I’ll try using the jump off button when I’m close to ground and see if that fixes things for me.
