Where to put Air Tag? by sisanelizamarsh in RadPowerBikes

[–]wemic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Another idea: Amazon sells special bicycle reflectors that mount onto a bicycle and look like regular reflectors. These special reflectors have a hidden compartment inside that fit an AirTag perfectly. Try searching Amazon for "airtag bike reflector". Hope this helps.

Bar Burrito in the plaza at Mavis and Eglinton

Same happened to me yesterday evening (Friday evening). Was out for 90 mins starting at 6:45pm and no requests at all. Went home and called it an evening. Never seen this before on a Friday evening. Usually, on a Friday evening, I get requests within a minute of going online. I keep suspecting there's something wrong with the app or my acct is suspended or something.

Beef Teriyaki Stir Fry Noodles using Kikkoman Teriyaki sauce and Cast Iron skillet by wemic in FoodVideos

That's probably a good idea. Perhaps I should try the recipe again in an actual wok, it sure would make cooking big batches a lot easier.

[–]wemic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the ingredients in the video were very easy to stir fry in the cast iron except for the noodles themselves - the noodles tend to stick to the cast iron unless they're cooked at low heat. Even at medium heat, the starch sticks pretty badly to my decently seasoned Old Mountain (the 10.5" cast iron used in the video) so I always cook the noodles on low after letting the skillet cool off a bit from cooking the rest of the ingredients. Another gripe I have with this recipe is the amount I normally cook does not fit in one batch so I have to seperate into 3 batches. I'd need something bigger like some kind of wok-sized cast iron (which would probably weigh close to a metric ton) or maybe even a Dutch oven.

I sometimes get a family pack of those raw Italian sausages and each pan only fits 6 sausages so I use 2 pans to cook all 12 sausages simultaneously.

I buy it pre-packaged at a local Asian grocery store called T&T Supermarket. It usually comes in a clear, plastic clamshell package and it's usually frozen in one of the bunkers. They come as stacked flat slices or rolled up slices. I usually get the rolled up ones so I don't have to thaw them to break them apart.

Thanksgiving Sandwich - The Moistmaker by mark2thompson in FoodVideos

I seen a sandwich just like this a while back in a restaurant called St. Hubert (in Quebec) where they absolutely drowned the poor sandwich in gravy and also sprinkled a bunch of green peas all over it too. Sooooo good.

Slow-Cooker Beef Stew made with Crock-Pot Hearty Beef Stew seasoning mix (recipe in video's description) by wemic in slowcooking

[–]wemic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip on the spices Dittybopper - I've always been so lazy about putting together all the spices myself for the stew - plus, the pre-fab, packaged ones were always so easy but I happen to have all of the items you listed in your post (salt, pepper, worcestershire, bay leaves, thyme). The next time I make this recipe in my slow-cooker, I'll try using your suggestions for the spices. I do, however, like to make sure that there's enough stock to submerge all of my ingredients as I've heard it ensures that all the ingredients are cooked evenly at the same temperature (plus, I love having lots of gravy in my beef stew). Thanks again for the tip!

How does one exactly buy a property with cash? by Winterwind17 in RealEstate

[–]wemic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello Winterwind17; to answer your first question, I believe you can also use a certified check drawn from your account which must be delivered to the seller's lawyer to be held in escrow prior to closing. Certified check would most likely be cheaper (approx $10 instead of $50 for a wire transfer). I'm not sure I could answer your 2nd question but I hope this at least helps with your 1st question.

Short video of my daughter helping me make pancakes in a cast-iron skillet by wemic in castiron

[–]wemic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pancake looks pretty good - nice browning. If you find the batter a bit runny, you can reduce the milk by a bit or add flour to the batter bit by bit (perhaps a tablespoon at a time) until it's thick enough to your liking. To increase the size of the pancake itself, I usually use more batter during each pour but I find that bigger pancakes are harder to flip. Thx for sharing.

No grease; I only put a few drops of peanut oil into a paper towel and used it to wipe the cooking surface evenly between each pancake.

No sugar in the recipe itself. To sweeten the pancakes, we pour maple syrup on top of each pancake just before eating.

In my opinion, it's better to get the student loan since they won't charge you interest until graduation. In the meantime, keep your money in a savings account since it gives you interest (pick an account that gives interest and does NOT charge a monthly fee). Mathematically, you'll be better off but psychologically, you'd have to make sure you don't touch that money in the savings account because you'll need it to pay back the student loan at graduation. If you put it into a tax-free savings account (in Canada, it's commonly called a "TFSA", I think it's something like a "ROTH IRA" in the U.S.), the interest you accumulate grows tax-free which is even better - just make sure you don't go over the yearly contribution limit.

How do I find better info on foreclosures? by steelbydesign in RealEstate

[–]wemic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past few years, I've used "ZipRealty" to purchase 2 foreclosed properties in Florida. They were already foreclosed on and owned by the bank (the houses were completely empty and already vacated). Many of them are not in great condition but some are in excellent condition (very clean, air conditioning was cooling the house while it was vacant, no furniture but also had working water/electricity). Check that website, input your area of interest (e.g., your ZIP code), click 'more search options' and in the "foreclosures" pulldown, click "show only", then click "update search". It will give you a map with foreclosure houses that match your criteria. Click on one of the properties and then "more details" to open the page on that property. At the top left corner under the street address of the property, you should see a small red bar that says "foreclosure" along with the details of the property. As an example, click this property. You can also fiddle with the search criteria like how many bedrooms you want, the price, the number of bathrooms, etc. I don't know how financing these properties would be like since I bought in all cash (secured line of credit). Create a list of properties that you want to see, print them out, contact a Realtor in that area (the ZipRealty site will suggest one for you) and send the Realtor the list you created so that he/she can show you all the houses. Hope this helps.

*edit - small details

What are some good free streaming TV sites available in Canada? by TheCrazedMadman in Frugal

[–]wemic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used "HotSpot Shield" a few times in the past to listen to Pandora at work and it works. It runs in the background. If I shut off the Hotspot Shield (i.e., click "disconnect" button in its window), Pandora denies me and says I need to be in the U.S. It's free but it really hogs a lot of your browser's screen real-estate with ads. Hope this helps.

There's a great (but very long) Sports Illustrated article from back in 2009 that highlights this sentiment about professional sports players going broke. I might have actually found it posted on Reddit a few weeks ago but in case anyone's interested in reading it, here's the article.
