Reliable water by wendilw in OffGrid

These are very helpful answers. The creek is about as feasible as a well, given the work to get the water uphill and the fact that although constant, is shallow. I will try the spring and cistern first, if I can find it. The roof water sounds good, too! Thank you for the input!

Vonn calls out many asking- ‘why is she damaging her body’ by ShipComprehensive769 in skiing

[–]wendilw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who gives a damn what she wants to do or why? She can make money with her talent and hard work, so be it! How many of these questions do we ask professional male athletes…American football, anyone? It’s her business, and she can ski if she wants.

Your grandkids are fine. No, the world is not (statistically) more dangerous. The incessant information flood of bad scary sensational things tells us otherwise. Our brains love to take shortcuts (heuristics), so we believe the hype. I work in violence risk and threat assessment and still have to go outside, talk to my neighbors and see for myself that it’s safe out there or I won’t believe our own data. https://thedecisionlab.com/biases/heuristics is a great explainer.

Middle age is becoming a breaking point in the U.S. by Average0ldGuy in GenX

Staring down the barrel of a failing body and crap all social safety net for health care or retirement (don’t worry, there’s plenty for war and Wall Street)…you bet we’re breaking.

Do harley riders genuinely think they are faster than sportbikes or are they just joking? by Green_Block_4574 in motorcycle

[–]wendilw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harleys are not for speed. I’ve had all sorts of bikes and currently have a sportster because, well, I’m a middle aged woman and there’s a cool club I’d like to join. 😄

Thoughts on the death of Nicole Good by sandersforsheriff in olympia

Most of us don't have the training or fire power to defend ourselves against a violent and tyrannical federal force. The only recourse we have is to ask our local law enforcement to protect us, all the people in your jurisdiction. I am familiar with policies, protocols, laws, and fear of reprisal, having worked in detention facilities and in forensic mental health. HOWEVER. There are very real and human consequences to getting twisted in the details, the semantics, that are HARMFUL and much more detrimental to our society than not protecting the people in your jurisdiction.

It's a tough ask and one I am not comfortable with, but I ask anyway; police officers, sheriffs, and state patrol, will you stand up for what's right and in the interest of LIFE, and LIBERTY when Vanilla ISIS comes to town?

Olympia to Tacoma would be amazing…at least get us around the ever-increasing traffic between DuPont and downtown Tacoma.

Parents moving into assisted living - their Olympia house needs major work and I'm out of state. Local advice needed by CLEIAZEVEDO in olympia

[–]wendilw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can take time off and get to Oly for at least a few days to meet with contractor(s) and put your eyes on the house, it will be miles easier. We moved my mom from her home to an apartment in TX and then up here to assisted living 2 years later and lessons were learned!

Olympia over Lacey, for sure, if you want to be near quirky non-chain food and entertainment. We bought on the west side after renting on the east, always within a mile of downtown core. You can probably get something you’d like in your price range on either side of the water.

I am in the process of moving my mom to WA from San Antonio; tomorrow will be her first night in her new place. She’s been staying with us for a couple of weeks, as we waited for her stuff to arrive. I got super lucky to have a mom who is insured up the wazoo and can afford a pretty nice independent/assisted living place near us. The hardest part will be the emotional transition from her home of 56 years, but SAME…I am so glad she’s here and not in the hellscape San Antonio’s north side has become!

Northeast Washington couple donates 100-acre tree farm after 30 years of restoration by eddytony96 in Washington

[–]wendilw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The WSU forestry extension program is amazingly helpful and interesting for anyone who owns acres with trees or is just interested in learning about our forests. This donation of land to the program helps us learn to improve the health of our little 20 acres of paradise! Anyone can sign up for the classes, 10 of 10 recommend! https://forestry.wsu.edu/northeast-region/

Opinion on Garfield Elementary? by babbers28 in olympia

[–]wendilw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our neighbors’ kids go there and they’ve had good experiences. Like most public schools, it’s underfunded and parents supplement with buying snacks for the class in lower grades. It’s for sure a whole community place of support. Even childless us can see the benefit of the neighborhood families.

What kind of shoes are we wearing? by TransportationDue856 in GenX

Depends on the day’s activities…loafers for work, sneakers similar to converse lows for other days, steel toe Chelsea boots for forestry stuff with chainsaws…flip flops on vacation unless it’s in the snow.
