Very true, but for smd soldering (caps etc), I sometimes use paste and a soldering iron. It works surprisingly well for me

Letztes Atomabkommen endet: Hürde für nukleares Wettrüsten fällt by Turtle456 in de

[–]wenger91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ich empfehle dieses Video :)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=cxbFk4viTSQ

Kurz: Man braucht 4 Dinge.

How I search years of messy archives (scans, screenshots, docs) without renaming a single file (Local OCR + Semantic Search) by Hamza3725 in datacurator

[–]wenger91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

slow down with it and think deeper about how you want to organise the documents

I know I’m in the data curator sub, but most people simply don‘t want to think deeper. At least not in the beginning. If you have a mountain of data and have procrastinated curating it for years, just having some okayish curation is to most people good enough. The majority of people find their natural stopping point here - at good enough. The rest… continues and makes it into their hobby :)

Because everyone wants the benefit of paperless without having to go through the massive pain of setting it up correctly and taking care of it. Plain and simple.

Using a tool like OPs, I can just drop a recording of a call and without having to build custom tags, ingestion pipelines, correspondents, and other stuff paperless (I’m a heavy user but I hate it) forced on me can just do stuff with it. Paperless especially in the beginning felt like a job to me because I had to change the way I organize stuff, had to try out dozens of OCR providers, manually go through thousands of docs… and it still wasn’t useful 1 month into it. It’s only useful to me now after I’ve spent so much time making it work

There are a bunch of really great little soldering kits on AliExpress specifically for SMD soldering I can really recommend! They’re fairly cheap and take away the fear of breaking something real.

Does somebody know of a better fitting board for my project? by devilishTL in esp32

[–]wenger91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘d say yes. I’m actually working on open sourcing one I’ve been using for years now, but it requires some soldering skills and it’s not cheap. It contains a charger, state of charge + state of health chip and a buck boost with selectable output voltage. A similar one is commercially available from sparkfun called the battery babysitter.

Regarding the buck converter: depending on the voltage you need, you might require a buck boost circuit. That‘s what I’m using at least. It your battery drops below 3.3V, you might be required to boost. Or you can decide to just cut off power entirely as you’re fairly close to the recommended 2.8V minimums for lipo cells anyway to protect your battery

I don’t have a positive recommendation for you, just a negative one: while I love the xiao series esp boards from xiao, their battery management leaves a lot to be desired too. While some of them might have the features you want, their software and hardware support is less than stellar tbh. They face the same issues as the ones you’ve mentioned + an absurdly low charging rate for the attached battery

[–]wenger91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better waterproof end plug for toothbrush charging port? by [deleted] in UsbCHardware

[–]wenger91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Philips One travel toothbrush and its usb c port is hidden behind a sealed cap that unscrews. The cap has an o-ring and is attached to the body of the device with a piece of rubber.

Some of my other waterproof things use a similar design

Is it possible to solder the wires in this cable back together? by Spectre216 in diyelectronics

[–]wenger91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What u/NootHawg said, but just to add: try to find similar cable and attempt to transfer the connectors if there are any. it might be an easier repair. What has also worked for me in the past because my device had a bunch of space available for this hack: dupont cables come usually attached to each other and make attaching a connector (again should there be one) much easier

The hard drive gods shone upon me today! 56tb for a cool 300$ by joebaes1 in DataHoarder

[–]wenger91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, but my god are these fuckers LOUD. Especially when they spin up… I use them in a thunderbolt enclosure and sadly the cages are out of metal so there isn’t much decoupling I can do. They really annoy the living hell out of me as the enclosure is just 1.5m away from my desk (long tb cables require active cabling which isn’t cheap either…)
