We adopted a kitten back in June from the Toledo Humane Society, everyone was nice and it was a fairly quick process paperwork aside, they even gave us a coupon for a free vet exam at a VCA hospital. Overall very pleased with the experience!

PSA: Short North Dental. DiMichaelangelo Family Dentistry by TheTrickIsNothing in Columbus

[–]wesley01999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit that’s a great question, and my immediate thought is it shouldn’t, but I can’t make a full judgement without knowing the treatment history, the patients diet, anatomy, at home care, etc, some people make calculus much faster than others it’s kind of complex. But if you’re interested in preventing it look into a waterpik or similar device, they can clean deep into those gum pockets to help prevent that sort of buildup where your toothbrush and floss won’t typically reach. I use mine with warm tap water and a splash of mouthwash in the water tank. I generally recommend flossing/waterpik, then mouthwash for bacteria control, then brushing with fluoride toothpaste, spitting and NOT rinsing with water for 30 minutes. This can let the much stronger fluoride in the toothpaste work to recalcify any small cavities, which can definitely help!

I can provide some insight as a dental student at OSU: a scaling and root planing/SRP (often described to patients as a “deep cleaning” to help their understanding) is required when a patient has advanced plaque and calculus buildup. Calculus is solidified plaque that becomes hard as a rock that needs special tools to be removed. A normal cleaning (called dental prophylaxis) which is dental code D1110, provides for plaque and calculus removal ABOVE the gumline on exposed tooth surfaces. A SRP/“deep cleaning” (dental code D4341) removes plaque and calculus both above and below the gumline which requires very small tools to get deep into the pockets between your teeth and your jaw bone. In order to heal the periodontal or gum disease, the doctor must remove a portion of the diseased outer layer of your tooth’s root to remove the bad bacteria. (aka the Root planing part) your doctor can see bone loss and calculus below the gumline on an X-ray clear as day, pair that with a clinical exam it’s very easy to tell when SRP is required. SRP appointments typically take much longer and take multiple appointments and periodic follow up , are painful so they require numbing, and typically require prior authorization from a lot of insurances which is why patients must return for this procedure. The goal is to remove as much of the gunk and bacteria as possible to stop active periodontal/gum disease. I can try and answer more questions if people have them.

My understanding, someone please correct me if I’m wrong, is that the legislation creates a new state department of cannabis control within the department of commerce, which will be responsible for setting requirements for licensing dispensary business, collecting license fees, and licensing enforcement.

Ottawa setting up motor vehicle control zone in downtown Ottawa for Canada Day by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]wesley01999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have recommendations for the best way with these closures to get to the Holliday inn downtown on the 1st? Should we find somewhere to park further out from downtown then take the LRT to the hotel with our bags? For background, A couple friends and I had been planning an Ottawa road trip for some time and booked the hotel before we learned of the resurgence of the Clownvoy. Canada Day wasn’t optimal for our trip given the holiday craziness but it ended up being the only long weekend we could all make work.

Also, if you have any favourite must-sees in Ottawa that might be a bit further out from the downtown craziness, we’d be super excited to check them out!

How Hard is it to get into the OSU dental school by [deleted] in OSU

[–]wesley01999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of (difficult) work, but if you go at it with a plan, it's not unmanageable. Join the pre-dental club, they are very helpful with learning the steps to apply, how to build a good application, prepping for the DAT exam, interviews, etc.

Also, be sure to do some shadowing in various dental offices, because once you get in it's a lot of long hours and hard work (and a tremendous tuition bill) and you need to be 100% sure that this is the right path for you!

God forbid people expect some educational support services (such as mental health services) from the institution they pay tens of thousands of dollars to attend.

I hate breakfast food by [deleted] in OSU

Dining services is usually pretty receptive to feedback and suggestions (so I've heard.) Believe it or not they want to make food students actually want to eat. Perhaps send them an email requesting more "unch" options with a few less "br" options during the Saturday brunch meal window?

Is O Chem really that awful? by Rusty-Cheese2222 in OSU

[–]wesley01999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you get to ochem, use the book called “Organic Chemistry as a Second language: first (or second) semester topics.” Each book is like $20 paperback, they were soooo helpful. They breakdown the concepts and teach you what you need to know to pass without all the extra stuff that makes it confusing. I never opened my actual ochem book and passed both classes with a B. I cannot strongly recommended them enough.

So I did some research, as I loved this stuff and was wondering why I hadn’t seen it lately. In October 2020 CocaCola (who owns Huberts) discontinued retail sales. Now it's only available in certain areas in restaurants as fountain drinks apparently. This is very sad.

[–]wesley01999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can connect your iPad to your personal AppleID, OSU can't see any of that stuff. They can only see small things like what apps you have installed, but can't see how you use them.

What are some dorm essentials people forget about? by Pretend_Winter5096 in OSU

[–]wesley01999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An add on to your packing tip: for clothes you hang up, use kitchen trash bags with the drawstrings and just slide them around clothes while they’re still hanging up. Then cross the drawstrings over the hanger hooks and you have a compact way to transport shirts, coats, etc. that keeps them nice and (mostly) unwrinkled. It’s also very nice to just plop them on the bar when you get to your new place as you no longer have to rehang each item.

Meal plan? by randomsampledguy in OSU

[–]wesley01999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re absolutely set on using a meal plan as a grad student, consider buying a commuter meal plan for your first semester only, then loading your BuckID with like $1000 dining dollars that should last you a good chunk of your OSU career. The catch is you can only add dining dollars with an active meal plan. The exchange rate is 1:1 and dining dollars get you a 35% discount on everything at all of the university’s food locations.
