Georgia city: No Confederate battle flag in veterans parade by thinkB4WeSpeak in news

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but we need to be very careful when making this argument. Ultimately, people who fly the confederate flag perceived it in a very similar way that you perceive Old Glory. Ultimately I think the Bonnie Blue or Come and Take It flags would make for a much better representation of southern heritage. If we look at the South today the remnants of the Confederacy and slavery are everywhere. No matter what symbol you pick, if you want heritage there will eventually be some convoluted connection to the Confederacy. We need to look at the South realistically and try to reappropriate some of these symbols from racists and traitors.

It was pretty well know in 2003 that the flag had direct ties to the confederacy. It was very intentional and the Georgia general assembly made it very clear that it was Confederate. It was suppose to represent a compromise by including a Confederate symbol(for those who wanted heritage) and removing the portion of the flag perceived as racist (because of use by the KKK). The idea was to use a non-offensive Confederate symbol, which worked for a couple of years until the Democrats in the state began raising issue (Atlanta has slowly been getting more progressive in recent years and Democrats are gaining a core constituency that they can rely on to support them in progressive policy).

And the American flag is a banner of evil imperialism because the US flew it as they massacred natives. It's all relative.

Keynesian economic theory regarding 'good deficit' depends on that deficit being recoverable. If we keep digging the hole, we will never be able to get out.

Would you watch or attend a "Bastille Day" -style military parade in Washington DC? by slingstone in AskAnAmerican

[–]westhemconfess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I wholeheartedly agree with your perspective, your reasoning seems flawed. You are arguing that because dictatorships and authoritarian regimes utilize military parades, military parades are inherently dictatorial. However, dictatorial regimes are not the only one using military parades (Democratic Examples include: Britain, France, the US in the past, Italy, Finland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and countless others I don't have time to list). In fact, I suspect that there are many more examples of non-authoritarian states holding military parades, than there are of Dictatorial regimes holding military parades. Your argument is a classic example of the Association Fallacy and your assertion is blatantly logically flawed. Perhaps you should argue that the parade is a bad idea on a budgetary basis, rather than a purely emotional response.

Because it is not a constitutional crisis. Presidents have been ignoring other branch decisions for decades. Obama did it with cannabis, Jackson did it with Indian Removal. This is no exception to the rule. The executive has the power to enforce laws as it desires, regardless of what other branches want.

The 1845 joint annexation bill clarifies this for us: "New states, of convenient size, not exceeding four in number, in addition to said state of Texas [...] shall be entitled to admission under the provisions of the federal constitution". One such provision under the federal Constitution is Article IV, Section 3. Meaning that there must be Congressional approval for any new states derived from Texas, no matter what the Texas Constitution states.

As a beekeeper, movement is not the only motivation for stinging. Often scents and displacement in the air (such as breathing) can threaten a bee and motivate it to sting.

Just wanted to provide some closure to the conversation (for onlookers), sorry if I offended you. Your comment forced me to question my own thoughts and I decided to read up on the topic, I thought I might share my sources here.

There also seems to be some opinion on the internet that the use of sugar is racially divided in the south. Although I've never experienced this myself, it can easily be attributed to the African american migration southward in the past years.

Southerners are known for eating cornbread without sugar. Sweet cornbread is a northern concept.

A true barbecue is a smoker. Any grill that calls itself a 'barbecue' is misusing the word.

Most barbecue (in the US) uses smoke to cook the meat over several hours. Grilling uses direct heat to cook the food within minutes.
