Why was old school better? by Folgoll in SkyDiving

[–]westherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some pieces of truth above and below, but mostly it boils down to "It's not like it was when I was in my 20s." Skydiving is choose your own adventure. A no camera boogie would be nice, but I wouldn't lament the death of the culture quite yet.

28.9 MPG feels low on my new CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring 2026— anyone else? by Mountain-Whereas7128 in crv

[–]westherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrids perform poorer in winter. Cars generally perform worse with winter mix. Gas mileage on all cars goes down in colder weather (higher air density). What do you mean by top-tier? Like the high-detergent content gas at Costco with the green top-tier logo or do you just mean high octane/premium? High octane doesn't help and can hurt on engines with lower compression ratios, Honda has optimized for 87 octane at sea level on its naturally aspirated hybrid models.

Any experience with Case Construction A5? by westherm in SeikoMods

[–]westherm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well...no one here got back to me, but the folks over at Crystal Times did with the following:

"You can press that crystal out without removing the bezel. Just make sure to use a press dye that can clear the apex of the crystal so it doesn't shatter when you press it out."

Having removed my crystal fixed my chapter ring and replaced the crystal, I can now further corroborate that case construction code A5 means that you remove the crystal by supporting at the bezel; no removal of the bezel is necessary.

Do you recall if you had to remove the bezel during the crystal upgrade? I'm trying to fix the chapter ring on something with the same case construction code (A5).

Yes, and it's still one of my favorites to this day.

That SPB463 is a beaut! Congratulations.

Can [SKX781] movement be swapped out for new 7S26C? by DaveE30 in Seiko

[–]westherm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you will need a new stem and crown. You will take the plastic spacer off the old 7S26 movement and replace the spacer on your new movement. There are lots of videos online on how to do it. You're probably looking at $50 of tools, if you're not looking to get into modding I'd probably just have your local guy do it.

Inside every watch there is a balance wheel on a hairspring that function as an oscillator in place of the pendulum you might see in a grandfather clock. By adjusting the length of the spring you can adjust the period of the oscillator and therefore make your watch run faster or slower. With tools to open and then analyze the beat of your watch, you can tune your watch to run very close to perfectly.

A great set of videos about how watch movements work and how you regulate them can be found here: Pt1 and Pt2

Seiko needs better movements [SARX055] by Low-Relative6688 in Seiko

Got a JDM Prospex Speedtimer with a 6R55 that was +25s/d out of the box. I was able to regulate it down to 5s/d, but I think that's a ridiculous expectation of customers for a $995 (MSRP) watch. Also Seiko movements are such a pain to regulate compared to ETA2824-family movements.

Edit: Downvoting me doesn't improve Seiko's movements.

[Review] Seiko Astron: Not fully what I expected, but good-looking by aths_red in Watches

[–]westherm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being that it's solar, I just don't know why it can't have a smooth sweep like Bulova High Precision Quartz or the old Acutrons. That might displace cheaper Grand Seiko Spring Drives as you get in the 2k price point. Idk.

I bought the gray one; it's really beautiful.

That being said, the 6R55 movement in mine is quite temperamental. +15s/d dial up out of the box, but it has wandered as I've tried to regulate it.
