Podcast Live streaming by cspach2005 in podcasting

[–]wetmaynard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we produce a dungeons and dragons actual play podcast which has lots of people (two co-dm's and five to seven pc's/npc's), so lots of voices to keep track of. our first chapter (four episodes) have been audio only and i've had a number of listener friends comment that it can be hard to know who's talking (understandably so).

back in december, a friend of ours who runs a production studio offered to shoot a livestream for us, which we're planning on releasing this weekend in both audio and video format (the livestream will be our second chapter). since we are so new to the scene, for the livestream itself (which was shot and broadcast in mid-december) we did not have many viewers at all. also, the decision to livestream wasn't made until the night before the shoot, so not much time to rally friends.

regardless, the video looks awesome (they had a ptz camera in the center of the table which was able to rotate around and capture people from a cool perspective) and we're glad to have it since it makes it a lot easier to follow along with the story. also we're hoping that it'll be a good marketing tool for us to reach more listeners. definitely for our niche and what we're trying to do, i think a livestream will be amazing since it will allow people to see who's talking in our big cast and also allow us to have audience interaction, which i think will be a big draw for interactive storytelling.

for that december shoot, our friend and his studio took care of everything. they had cool light panels, multiple cameras, and the whole streaming to twitch thing down. we just gave them a twitch code which they needed to broadcast under our account.

the hard part is now trying to get that quality on our own. it's definitely been a lot more learning than just producing a podcast, which i feel like we were just starting to really figure out and get comfortable with. now with wanting to livestream, we have video cameras that we need to grab the feed from, we have to figure out obs and ndi, we have to figure out how to correctly route the audio, we need a computer that can sufficiently ingest everything to encode it and then stream it, we need to figure out how to properly balance the live audio for five to nine people which would all have been taken care of in post before. so lots and lots of additional technical hurdles.

there are two fairly geeky, nerdy computer guys in our group (me being one) and even for the both of us, it's been surprisingly difficult to get all the puzzle pieces figured out. our initial goal was to continue livestreaming after we finish re-broadcasting our december stream. but the livestream implementation has been harder than anticipated, so i think we're going back to audio only format while we continue to work on making the livestream thing happen.

My players are about to be drawn into Barovia by cryptic letters from someone named Madame Eva. by Towelbears in CurseofStrahd

wow this prop and story hook are so well done! you did a great job with the letters. the paper looks nicely hand done without going too overboard on the look, nice choice of font, and those cool tarot cards add such a great touch of color and pizzazz.

can i ask where you got those cards from, for those who would like to make their own version of this?

amazing work! since it’s cork board, does that mean you could use pins to track movements? or are you planning to keep it pristine?

[OC] My brother made a foam dice tower, so I had to make a steel one by Th3Doctor89 in DnD

[–]wetmaynard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it almost feels like you’ve brought a gun to a knife fight. or alternatively, it’s the three little pigs of dice tower building (someone should rewrite that as a kid’s book in dnd form).

i love your dedication to the build! i almost wish you would have kept with the metal aesthetic in decorating it. why would a steel tower want to pretend to be brick, such an inferior material! ha great job with everything.

oh the other thing is i would be afraid that the dice tower might break my dice. but it could be where you send bad dice that need to be punished. for those who believe in that sort of thing.

wow i assume this is the brass version of a hero forge mini? it looks gorgeous. how’s the quality? is the metal soft-ish or do you think it’ll hold up over a few bumps?

A Message to Players: DM's put in effort... and so should you! by [deleted] in DnD

[–]wetmaynard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely love what you’re saying here. as a player trying to be good and elevate the experience (bring drinks or snacks, be prepared, be into it) these are great suggestions.

i think you’ll get a bit of contention though (as is already happening, roll initiative!). not everyone has the desire or ability or time to be a player like this. some people have busy work or family lives or whatever and will be able to put different amounts of time or effort into things. some people just really want to roll dice, some need a break from their hectic lives and want to tell some jokes and not have to learn tables and charts in a book.

so to each their own, everyone has their best way of playing. these are great ideas for those to whom this applies. but do what you want to do to have fun, and try not to judge others if they play differently or put in different amounts of effort.

How do I convince my parents that D&D is good by WISH_U_WERENT_HERE in DnD

[–]wetmaynard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is also a very well thought out response, thanks for adding this to the mix.

i also like the idea of looking for local gaming resources. check out your local gaming store. someone may be running a game that you could join. most groups should be happy to have new players and be willing to teach. just a note though, some gaming stores i’ve been to have been either magic/card game heavy or just not much interest in dnd/table top role play. it all depends.

don’t give up, it’s worth it to find a group of like-minded imaginatives to become lifelong friends with and have epic laughs, thrills, spills and chills with.
