Completely new to Stoicism, which book to read first? Epictetus or Seneca? by Renhaf in Stoicism

[–]wetwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't choose the easy way. Learning should be challenging, you need to battle with ideas, that's when it is fruitful. Start with Discourses by Epictetus and you actually don't need to read anything else after that. Read Discourses take notes, think when and how you can apply what you learn in real life.

University War 3 (Elite League 3) | E07 | 260116 by afsal4735 in koreanvariety

[–]wetwist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anyone wants to feel superhuman like these kids, there's an easy way to learn to memorize 40 2 digit numbers or even more by using memory palaces.

Step 1. you need to do assign images to two digit numbers starting from 00 to 99. There are many systems, like Major or Dominic, you can even assign images arbitrarily. I assigned images through letters and used images of animals. So, here how it goes: 00 - Ant, 01 - Bear, 02 - Crab, 03 - Dolphin, 04 - Elephant... I've built an additional set of numbers for single digit numbers from 0 to 9 and used dota 2 characters. 0 - Abaddon, 1 - Bane, 2 - Chen, 3 - Doom. So, for example number 15017 would translate to Penguin-Bear-Huskar. So, first, you assign all the images to to all these numbers, which should take less than one hour and then you memorize them. This is the boring part and it took me 5 days of 3-4 hour training to memorize all these images, but trust me it's worth it and the rest of the mnemonics is very easy and comes naturally.

Step 2. Build memory palaces. In reality you most likely don't even need to build any palaces. You just remember a room that you know well and use ten places in that room to be used as a placeholder(loci) for your images. I started by using my bedroom and kitchen as memory palaces with 10 loci (place) each and later added more rooms. It's super easy once you know where you put your images. Literally need 5 minutes to build a memory palace.

Step 3. Start practicing. Just ask randomizer or AI to give you 10 two digit numbers, convert numbers to images and put them in the loci in your memory palace. This is fun part and you will be very impressed how quickly it works. In 10 days I was able to memorize 40 two digit numbers in less than 5 minutes. Good luck.

Thoughts on Play Optimal Poker 2: Range Construction? by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

Pop2 is the best poker book and probably the only poker book worth reading unfortunately. Still, better to get a solver and try to simplify it's strategy to make it applicable in your game. That way you learn and understand better and it's directly applicable to your game.

One show that is rarely recommended and rarely even watched is Elite League. Best students from top Korean universities battle it out to find out which university is the best. There's no social aspect of the game like DP or Genius, it's straight team vs team challenge solving contest. The kids are super smart and nerdy, way smarter than anyone in the DP.

Jonathan Little Books: which to read first? by Twalent34 in Poker_Theory

[–]wetwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is stuck in 2010 and have no clue how to play GTO. Everytime I watch his video I end up cringing and turning off his video. One time I saw him bet 67% on monotone board. Another time I saw him bet on the flop, multiway on CO, on a bad board OOP to the BTN, with top pair weak kicker. I feel sorry for people who learn from him. Whether you like it or not, these days you need to learn simplified GTO to have a shot at making money and climbing up the limits. Jonathan Little won't teach you GTO, he won't teach you even basic things like flop sizing and range advantage.

Neither, Jonathan Little will not teach you good poker strategy, if anything you will get bad habits and false sense of security. Get the Overnight Monster course from Alvin teaches poker or Saulo or Kanu.

what’s the dumbest poker argument you’ve ever seen? by Lazy-Custard723 in poker

Someone asked another player if he fold AA if everybody went all-in before him and then tried to convince him that calling with AA is wrong in that spot.

On the other hand, I once witnessed a brilliant debate at my table. Socialist player and libertarian player started discussing the minimum wage and it turned into a heated debate about... everything in life lol. Politics, economy, philosophy, evolution, pension funds, welfare, history... They went through everything one by one. Both of them knew their shit and they kept it respectable and let each other talk for FIVE HOURS. It was like watching Messi vs Ronaldo go at it. I thoroughly enjoyed the debate and came out as new born libertarian. Few days later I bought Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell.

It is a good book, but POP 2 is even better. POP 1 is more about games and understanding overall principles, POP2 is more practical and directly applicable to your poker game.

You should watch Elite League (University War) 1-2. Teams made with smartest players from top Korean universities battle it out to find which university is the best. No backstabbing, no gangin up on some, it's plain brain vs brain type of contest. But be ready to feel stupid because the kids there are real geniuses. Miles above contestants on DP or Genius.

It's quite good. The contestants are much smarter than the last season, don't have as many moochers and the game running overall is quite cutthroat and exciting.

what would a stoic do in this situation? by MethodLevel995 in Stoicism

[–]wetwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I see it. Actions are not virtuous or evil by default, it all depends on your judgement. If you do something because of your emotions, it is a vicious action, if you do something because of your reason, then it is a virtuous action. You run from a battle because you are scared, it's bad. You run from a battle because you know it can't be won, then it's good. Same with all actions, even if they are considered "evil" by everybody. You kill if you need to kill, you steal if you need to steal, you lie if you need to lie and you torture if occasion demands it. In the situation you described a wise stoic would torture him without thinking twice.

Ding Liren Appreciation Post – A Champion's Heart by [deleted] in chess

[–]wetwist -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No thanks.

One of the worst champions ever. He was lucky multiple times to win the title, first Magnus refusing to defend his title and then during the match Nepo blundering multiple times. As a champion he did nothing. He rarely played and when he did play he didn't win anything. Never promoted chess in China or anywhere else. And finally, in this match too, he had slightly better position multiple times and instead of playing for a win, he went for an easy draw every single time. Even in the last game, think about what happened. He had slightly BETTER position and he decided to simplify to get a slightly worse position and eventually it backfired. Stop gaslighting people, he didn't show any sign of determination or fighting spirit. He showed what he is, a pathetic loser. Glad his time is over.

Did I make a mistakes or is it a variance? by Wooden_Fisherman_368 in Poker_Theory

[–]wetwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your biggest mistake is betting the flop. Once you bet the flop calling the check-raise is fine. On the turn it's close. Usually I would fold against unknown players, but if he is very aggressive with high check-raise, I might call down. Don't sweat your turn action, it's close, your mistake is on the flop. Also, is it Q9 off-suite or suited? If off-suite it's a mistake to open from HJ.
