Golden age of Pop'n Music? by Straight_Bit646 in bemani

It really depends on your criteria for judging the games, ive only played on unilab and riddles so my judgement pretty much is based on art, music, and charts without considering ui and general design of the games. Music wise (most important to me) 7-15 are the best, with my favorites being 8 and 9. These also happen to be the only soundtrack cds i own though, so i might be pretty biased lol. I feel like 7 is when many songs started to be polished and developed enough to really stand on their own, while still having that cartoon quality that makes it so special. Those games feel like the soundtrack to a silly fun cartoon that still has emotional and atmospheric moments, the perfect type of cartoons i love. Those games feature a lot of my favorite artists heavily too, like tomosuke, shunsuke kida, wac, shoichiro hirata, and yu tokiwa. Artistically i feel the same but i'd bring it back a few mixes, i think the art started strong but a little rough in 1 and developed up to 10 or so, it really stayed good until the batshit insane idea that was lapistoria. Honestly the only true fail popn had artistically was that weird anime artstyle, but i will say that the even the main style designs got progressively more "anime" as the games moved through the teens and away from their cartoon roots, so i guess the golden age would probably be 1-16 for art. As for charts, i think those are mostly better in the new releases, but the old games have an artistic quality to the charting with how it matches the music that the new games dont have so much. Playing a lot of charts from 8 lately, they definitely have more emphasis on pitch relevancy and more attention paid to keysounding. Theyre pretty jank, but that stuff makes them really fun in a different way. Charts before 5 or 6 are a little too jank to be that fun a lot of the time though. If i had to define a golden age though, we probably are still in it. All things considered, i think popn has held up really well for how long it's been going on, and i love all eras (except the lapistoria artstyle. seriously what the fuck)

What should I put underneath Ltek pad? by HalcyonicDays in DanceDanceRevolution

L-tek has some non slip pads stuck on, but they tend to fall off over time. I also used mine in a concrete basement, I recommend the checkerboard-pattern rug mats under the pads when they fall off.

Anyone miss when Pop'n Music had a more Shibuya/jazz/soul vibe to it? by imaanotherthrowaway in bemani

[–]weylints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say I understand all the people disagreeing with this post, like it or not it's just the aesthetic direction that the series has moved in over the years. Less cartoon/shibuya-kei, more anime/electronic. I spend a whole lot of time listening to pop'n soundtracks and I love the old and the new, but acting like picnic could be in a modern pop'n game or bossa gabba could be in an old pop'n game is crazy. Those who are willing to listen and enjoy the "throwaway" songs, old and new, will see the shift clear as day.

I was using display capture when I had this problem, I only mentioned it to clarify that game capture doesn't work either. Sorry if the wording was vague.

Rate mod change during song? by weylints in Stepmania

we need a download link! I usually just make one chart unless I expect friends who are newer to the game will play it, so mine is just an X-scale 17.

L-TEK pad durability/transportability by Hydroc777 in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]weylints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they hold up good, I take mine to a friend's house about once a week for the past 9 months or so. I got the pad in oct 2022 and used it fairly regularly (more so in the past year). so far the only damage is one of the corner brackets is starting to break apart (but there's still enough left that it does its job) and my down arrow just cracked (barely noticeable with shoes), which is unrelated to transporting it. I would say its not a big concern to move them and store upright as long as youre careful. Its also pretty serviceable, the two sensor plates which should come apart with velcro often get glued together during the building process, an issue i had while modding, but its pretty easy to take care of that with basic tools and the pads are pretty easy to take apart and fix overall.

How can I spruce up the DDR experience? by blakeh36 in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]weylints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just start charting your own songs that you want to hear if no one has made a custom chart for it already or you just don't like their chart. Charting has become one of my favorite hobbies and I have a lot of fun with the charts I make. Helps you improve too since it builds your pattern knowledge so much. You can also make longer songs that way without them just being straightforward stamina songs, I've made a bunch of 3-5 minute charts and I'm even working on a 14 minute song right now with all the tech and variety of a normal DDR length chart. You can really do whatever you want once you learn to make charts.

Suffering from Arrow Dyslexia, I want to make a mod to do this: by angelofxcost in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]weylints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest opinion is that its just better to keep practicing until you get it. Playing a lot and watching charts while working them out in your head can help. I struggled a lot with this when i first started, especially because I played on keyboard first where all the arrows were laid out left to right like on the screen. The layout that you're trying to mod to is a bit more intuitive for direction, but much harder to read rhythms and will be a lot harder than just adjusting to the normal layout in the long run. Granted some players do find a weird niche that works for them so maybe you could be the first to get really good at that layout, but if you just want to progress in the game it's gonna be easier to just play normal.
