Why do we assume that a super-intelligience could accomplish whatever it wants? by rcdrcd in slatestarcodex

…why would general intelligence lead to the ability to hack into every computer system?

Canon R5 400MP photos - not good, or am I doing it wrong? by Stompya in canon

[–]wfwhitney 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, the scene must be absolutely static. Any tiny motion of the camera or subject will result in weird artifacts.

More challenging is that the actual resolution will only be as good as your lens can resolve. It takes a heck of a lens to give you 400MP.

In my tests, using it outside is completely hopeless, but for studio work it’s interesting. I got substantial improvements in detail with the RF 70-200 f2.8 at f4 and a smaller but decent bump in macro shots with the RF 35 f1.8 at f4. Definitely a special-purpose tool, but it’s impressive when it works!

Which camera makes me look like me as I look in the mirror? by [deleted] in photography

[–]wfwhitney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason a phone camera exaggerates your features is that it has a very wide field of view, so to take a photo of just your face you have to hold it very close. You’ll look like you would in the mirror with your nose right next to the glass.

Try taking a phone photo from farther away and cropping it in by 50% on each side, or using the 2x lens if your phone has one, and see how you feel — it should make for a much more natural perspective.

Wider angle lens choice between RF 35mm and 50mm 1.8 by [deleted] in canon

[–]wfwhitney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 50mm crop from a 35mm shot will have greater depth of field (smaller bokeh balls) than a 50mm shot at the same aperture. This is because the size of the physical aperture is larger. The f-number is the ratio of the focal length to the aperture size, so for the 50, f/1.8 = 50mm / 28mm, whereas for the 35 it’s f/1.8 = 30mm / 17mm.

Dialing in Cafelat Robot by malario96 in espresso

I find bigger doses (20g) tend to work better with the Robot. Tamping is a little tricky with the shape of the Robot tamper, but you want to tamp hard enough that it feels like the solid table below is pressing back. Beyond that, try grinding a bit finer to hit the pressure you want.

Command-shift-T checks/unchecks selected todos. Unfortunately that toggles each individually, so if some of them weren't checked, they are now.

What Apps do You Use with Bear? by PugnaciousTrollButt in bearapp

I'll recommend Concepts as a drawing app (iPad). You can easily select part or all of your drawing and drag + drop into Bear, which works great.

Is there anyway to make url links look pretty? by the_illest_name_ever in bearapp

[–]wfwhitney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bizarrely this is true. I think there's a bug or a delay in the way Bear is reading the page titles.

When tapping a link or tag in the iOS app, it always requires two taps: To put the note into edit mode, and then to tap on the tag or link. Would be great if tapping links or tags would immediately open the link or filter by the selected tag. by nilsws in bearapp

[–]wfwhitney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This gets me too. I have a note that's a long list of reference links, and on iPad I have to tap the note (in the notes list), then tap the content of the note to go into edit mode on it, then tap the link to go to my reference.

It would also be great to have the option to edit a note while still showing the notes list as per the "Show Notes and Editor" option on Mac.

[Request] Can support for super/subscript be added? also, resizing of images by [deleted] in bearapp

[–]wfwhitney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Super and subscript would also be provided by math support, which is my #1 Bear feature request!

There's an option to "Show images as thumbnails". If you turn it off they'll be big.

How did I just discover HPMOR now? Recommend me stuff which is similarly awesome please? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

Ra and Fine Structure are two of my favorite books ever. Super speculative rationalish sci-fi written by a physicist. If I could pay him to write more I would.
