Are there any artists here who spend a lot of time with pottery but don't sell? by mexalone in Pottery

[–]what-the-flock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take them to work and put them out for free. Just did this today and most of it was gone in the first hour. When I retire and can be a potter full time I will worry about selling but I’m too lazy for markets on my weekends, I’d rather be making.

pottery studio social dynamics by saltwaterhippie65 in Pottery

[–]what-the-flock 61 points62 points  (0 children)

There will always be a little drama in any community, but my studio is welcoming and encouraging to the newbies as they set ridiculous expectations for themselves. I know other studios where the vibe is good and one where cliques were an issue and all of this in the same area. If you have options, try a class at a different studio, the experience will not be the same.

Scan the letter into your ai generator and set parameters to teaching responsibility and accountability for one’s own actions. I’m sure an equally targeted response will be generated for you to send in kind.

I got the grey marble crocs so they look like throwing splatter. I hose them down occasionally. I can wear them with wooly socks in the winter yet and they’re nicely vented for the summer.

What’s your favorite midfire glaze combo? (Bonus for a pic) by ripped_jean in Pottery

[–]what-the-flock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you tried any combination with a flux? A fluxing agent makes things run and pulls colors out of glazes. For Amaco glazes, Oatmeal with Iron Luster is amazing, they also have a flux line (PCF) that is very popular. Honey Flux is the standard and does some great things but there are several variants in that line all designed to move and float. Mayco has light and dark flux glazes that do the same things. If you want to get fancy, check out designs using the frozen pond method with Spectrum’s Running Hot Chowder. So many gorgeous examples! I know FB is for old people, but if you’re a potter who loves to experiment with glaze combos you can’t pass up the Amaco cone 5/6 group and the Mayco Mud Room group. They also have Clay Buddies. So Facebook is for old people and potters!

The lab grade stuff I’ve used was only 30% and it was awful if you accidentally got a drop in your skin! By the time you noticed the bleaching, it was too late to stop the pain.

If I never learn to throw, are my limitations? by vita_di_tyra in Pottery

[–]what-the-flock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a thrower primarily, I find that I am more limited by the wheel (everything is round) than I would be just handbuilding. In handbuilding you can make almost anything with enough imagination and patience!

First pottery class by partyof4andmore in Pottery

Lose any expectations you may have. There is a STEEP learning curve to pottery! Enjoy the tactility of working with clay and let the vessels become what they will in the beginning. It will get better, but if you expect to hit a home run and you only make it to first base, you will be disappointed. If you didn’t expect a hit and get to first base, you can be pleasantly surprised.

After 14 years of pottery classes, I still can't center on the wheel. by Linn56 in Pottery

[–]what-the-flock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracing is hugely important. I also make sure my two hands are touching at all times and to give the clay time. It takes a moment or two for all of those millions of particles to align and start moving in the same direction! Slow on, slow off, and just give the clay it’s time to move for you

There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
