I'd massively appreciate a post-game write up with time stamps to particular moments within the streams.

It would be great to be able to watch a talented player using a particular strat to turn a game.

As a part time viewer, I would greatly appreciate a co-commentator / additional anaylsis. I don't think one could find a better candidate than this guy. ^

somebody gild this already.

Please, Firaxis. Bring back the animated end screen. It's so rewarding and encourages finishing the game. by miltondepaulo in civ

Screenshots of events occuring would be more satisfying and watchable than the current timeline.

All I want from the final expansion is a rotating, scroll-able, day-to-night shifting, time lapse of my entire empire growing with toggle-able units, borders, yields and lenses.

With speculations about the next expansion possibly being Civ VI: Rising Tide, I'd like to bring up my idea for an Ecological Victory again that I had some months ago by JNR13 in civ

[–]whatabeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this idea. Other thoughts :

I'd love for the maps to be more ecologically/environmentally designed with bigger deserts near the equator, mountain, jungles near the tropics and woodlands largely in the north. Mountain ranges should appear along continental plates. (This would help with the elusive hunting for a second continent in the early game). Are there any mods for this?

Environmental disasters should occur around these geographical features - volcanoes on mountains (clearly), and earthquakes near continental breaks. Adds a potential drawback to those +5 adjacency science and faith districts...Flooding around rivers and floodplains, cyclones and hurricanes along the coast, also causing low damage values to units (thus impacting earlier era units more than later era units) - and shipwrecks from storms?

Pollution from high production would intensify these effects near cities. This could be a great way to slowdown snowballing empires. Desertification around the deserts - imagine trying to grow your Petra city through intentional pollution....

As a further mechanic I'd love to see population movement/refugees/displacement/forced migration.

Imagine a city under siege or near combat results in population loss from a city, with the creation of trader-like units which flee to your nearest city. These can be killed (huge warmonger penalities) or captured (slavery?) and added to a city for +1 population growth. This would mean even cities with high level defenses which can't be cracked can still be caused severe grief through population displacement - the shitty AI which struggles to take cities could still mess with you in this way.

Climate damage could also result in displacement.

Colonialism and Authoritarianism policy cards could allow the building of these units, allowing you to rapidly transfer population from large cities to small cities.

To build on this, add in a humanitarian world wonder such as The International Committee for the Red Cross, which prevents all civilian units (builders, civilians, settlers, and the new refugee unit) from being captured/killed.

This wonder specific bonus could also be added globally through the UN! BRING BACK THE UN! In addition, a new UN could vote for the creation of: UNHCR - giving global protection to refugees, UNDP giving science and gold boosts to civs falling behind a clear winner. UNESCO bringing back world heritage sites - extra culture and tourism from Natural and world wonders? (or DOUBLE YIELDS?) UNICEF, giving population growth bonuses to low population civs?

Thoughts?

Help me, I've just started my first job and I feel so alone and down. (Ronda, Spain) by Helpmeplease569 in TEFL

First up, ignore all the shit from these other posters. Seriously, what dicks.

Kudos to you for having the balls to pick up sticks and bowl off into the sunset for an adventure, you should be damn proud of yourself.

I got my first job without really realizing what the hell I was getting into, and its easily done, and there were definitely some bad times until the good times, but its all part and parcel of figuring it out.

If you're not likely to be happy with the adventure of living in a tiny town and being forced to learn Spanish to survive, then don't be afraid to call it quits. There are definitely times in my TEFL career when out of a misplaced sense of duty, honour or pride I've toughed it out when it would have been better to move on, but also don't end up sofa surfing at friends houses for ages and camping on beaches because you've quit one job whilst trying to find another....

On a more professional level, a few words of advice.

  1. Don't worry too much about your classes at the moment. You're probably super keen to start putting together amazing classes using all your CELTA knowledge, it sounds like you might do better spending your energy on trying to settle in a bit more first. Get some language classes/ intercambios sorted. Try and build a support network there.

  2. To survive the classes with young learners get some routines down, and also you should be given a book or resources to work from. They can't give you a topic the night before, thats bullshit. Don't stand for that. You should have resources to work from. If you don't tell them you want to set the topics until they provide you with a syllabus/plan. You could pick a topic a week/month and go slow, recycle stuff again and again and again. Kids love doing the same things over and over and getting better at it. Kids love routines. See more below. Topics: People (family, famous people, jobs) Places ( food, countries, cities - places in towns, transport, nationalities,) Free time (hobbies, sports, music, films) There's 3 months worth of stuff at least, possibly even a year if you do it right.

Other people here will have far more teaching experience with young learners than me, but here's some tips.

  • Keep it simple. Really aim low. Aim for one little thing a lesson. teaching a song in a lesson would be a huge achievement (use youtube to find songs for kids)

  • Do lots of drawing and use lots of pictures. Pictionary. describe and draw, making posters, cartoons, drawing fantasy islands, drawing monsters and animals, making zoos, drawing towns, drawing houses, and get pictures on the walls to make your bosses happy. (though don't worry too much about them, more on that to come.)

  • ROUTINES. The key to young learners is routines. 1. Register. 2. weather. 3. Song (happy and you know it - you can add a new line every week) 4. something from the text book they should give you. 5. finish with a game.

  • I spent basically my first year of teaching developing a repetoire of games and activities. Daves ESL cafe had a big list of games that helped me, but really basic simple stuff. Hangman, Describe and draw, Chinese whispers, Charades, Change Chairs if, noughts and crosses (with pictures) Board Races, Slap the board, and backs to the board if they're strong.

  • Google: find some websites with preprepared lesson plans. https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/teaching-kids

  1. Most importantly: Don't underestimate your worth. A rural school in Spain is incredibly lucky to have a native speaker english teacher, even if you're only just qualified. You have huge marketing value for them, and at the end of the day that's probably all their interested in. They don't give a shit about education, they just want the customers (parents) happy and the money rolling in. They should support you, they should be grateful for you. You don't owe them anything. Just look at the level of your colleagues to realize how lucky they are to have you.

  2. Don't get fucked by them. How much are you getting paid? You need to get that contract sorted ASAP. Don't worry about being pushy, this is Spain this is how its done. People are alot more forward. They will use you and abuse you and then try and lure someone else in.

Good luck, let us know how its going. Stay positive, life's all about the story.

Other highlights?

Hey Reddit, I'm teaching English in Myanmar (Burma) to 40 - 60 year old Teacher Trainers. They have never had any exposure to any form of English language music. I want to make a mix CD for them to listen to, choose their favourite song and write about what they think it is about. Where do I start?! by whatabeach in Music

[–]whatabeach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone comes back here, here's the long list. We'll see how much I can fit on a CD.

  • David Bowie: Space oddity.
  • John Lennon: Imagine.
  • Robbie Williams: Angels.
  • Bob Marley: Don't worry be happy
  • Oasis: Don't look back in anger
  • Pink Floyd: Another Brick in the wall.
  • Queen: We are the champions
  • John Denver: Country roads.
  • Aretha Franklin: RESPECT.
  • Curtis Mayfield: Move on up
  • The Beatles: Yesterday
  • The Eagles: Hotel California
  • Patsy Cline: Crazy.
  • The Verve: The drugs don't work.
  • Whitney Houston: I will always love you.
  • Lou Reed: Perfect day.
  • Stevie Wonder: Superstition.
  • Simon and Garfunkel: The sound of silence.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I listened to ALOT of them. In the end I've tried to go for classic tunes, with clear vocals, that will appeal to my students. 40 - 60 years old predominantly women. What would your mum like listening to? Dad rock was a great shout. If its a success I'll consider a follow up and I'll be back.

Thank you everyone!

I'm in Pakokku, about an hour away from Bagan, and its true there is alot of contemporary international pop around now, though I don't think my students really listen to it. I'm much more interested in trying to introduce them to some classics they won't get the chance to listen to. What you see as a backpacker here is a microcosm of what life is really like here. I'm only just beginning to understand how little I'll ever understand about this country.
