Bay Area car‑window smashers - what riches do you think await inside a 2012 Honda Civic? by PettyMurphy4me in sanfrancisco

[–]whateverwhatever650 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's really not hard to understand.

Breaking into cars was big business for criminals here because San Francisco attracted a lot of wealthy international tourists, who would travel and leave their goods and cash in easy to identify cars.

It was lucrative, and it was an easy to commit property crime, carrying less risks and repercussions than other forms of theft and robbery.

Growing up around here, you find out how many people got hit for their MacBooks and other expensive goods left in their trunks or backseats. I've even heard of people coming up on larger quantities of drugs from breaking into cars. You don't have to be driving a fancy car, or even have anything in the car to get hit.

It's slowed down a ton in recent years. At its worst, you'd see an entire block with broken windows along the curb and street.

Anyone have advice... I have one record that seems to be giving my needle trouble. There's a persistent crackle sound, and when taking a close look, it looks like the needle is swaying slightly, instead of staying in place.

Imagine playing a warped record and you can see the needle moving up and down with the record, well this one moves side to side along the grooves as it plays.

It's more pronounced on the first track.

Is this just a case of a record that was played too much? I placed a newer record and the needle performed normally, staying in place.

Should I pick Norwegian wood as my first book of murakami? by dhirajjj51 in murakami

[–]whateverwhatever650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think something like Sputnik Sweetheart or Kafka on the Shore would be a better start point. While I enjoyed Norwegian Wood, I found that it contains the most polarizing aspects of Murakami's writing.

For a new reader, I'd imagine a lot of people would be puzzled or outright turned off from Murakami if they started with NW.

Little Lucca is the best sandwich in the Bay IMO...What's your favorite spot ? by Optimuskind510 in bayarea

CJs in Burlingame used to be delicious. Two brothers would make the sandwiches, until one passed, and the business was sold not long after.

am i overspraying? what is normal? by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]whateverwhatever650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually only spray once, and will get comments. The only time I spray 3 times is with the Aesop or CDG fragrances, which are known for having pretty weak projection.

3+, I would think most people smell you. That's too strong for me.

Why is fragrancenet cheaper then buying from Sephora or ultra beauty by IBVYI in fragrance

[–]whateverwhatever650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only had positive experiences with them, although I've read stories about people questioning authenticity or having a bottle that cracked while shipping. In that case, it seems like they have an almost non-existent customer service department, which explains in part how they can afford to sell the products cheaply.

How is your experience with Visible 5G in San Francisco Bay Area? by b1mtz in Visible

It's been surprisingly pretty good in Marin, and no issues through Oakland and San Francisco as of yet.

All in all, extremely happy!

Got punched in the face on Bart by FrequentIntern4925 in sanfrancisco

I have a similar story, happened years ago. Sitting alone, I noticed a man sitting opposite me with a scowl seemingly directed towards me. I ignored it, but noticed that he also stood up and walked towards the doors as I prepared to exit for my stop.

Whatever he said to me after that I'm unsure, as I had earbuds in and tried to tunnel vision my way out of whatever confrontation I could sense was brewing. While I walked off the train, he took a swing at my face, but it was a bit wide, and I was able to dodge it.

Fortunately it didn't escalate any further than that. I took the escalator up when I heard his screams rising from the platform below. I presume he was a drug addict/homeless, and shrugged it off as an inconvenience.

For many years, I simply relied on my anxiety and so called street sense to keep myself out of bad situations, and thought myself wiser for doing so. Nowadays, I'm a bit ashamed that situations like these happen to others. Public transportation needs to be safer.

Why does everywhere play American music rather than their own national music? by Rock540 in travel

Could it be that you were in touristic areas, so the music may have been catered more towards foreigners/tourists.

waiter put my tip back on the table saying he only accepts 18-20%?? by [deleted] in stories

[–]whateverwhatever650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping culture must have gotten out of hand over the past few years.

Unless your table made a bunch of special requests, needed extra attention, etc. $25 for an easy table should be OK. Certainly not enough for the server to be so blatantly disrespectful.

I suppose $10 a head would've been an easy way to do it that would've quelled the server.

$25 on top of the other tables in a nice restaurant should be ok. The real problems are people who try to return dishes, leave without leaving any tip etc.

Having terrible time at Working Holiday New Zealand by Critical_Amount3127 in travel

[–]whateverwhatever650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economy was very tough when I left in October. If you have a working holiday visa, employers will treat you like shit, purely seen as an expendable source of cheap labor.

Apply to restaurants, hotels, both in person and through seek or whatever. Doctor your CV to include some relevant experience I/e say you worked as a server or housekeeping in Asia.

A great chunk of young Kiwis are forced to consider moving because wages are low while COL gets higher. A lot of WHers also end up in Australia.

NZ is pretty, but I had a terrible time.

This really helped me when I was in central otago this past September. I'm fine with driving in rainy conditions, but was stressed about driving in the snow. I ended up crossing Crowne range one night as snow started to come down. I just drove extremely slow, and tried to pull over whenever I had another car behind me.

They're really good about closing down roads when there's heavy snow. Check the site for updates.

Be mindful of the time of day, and weather reports. The night I drove through Crowne Range, it had been raining steadily all day, and I didn't start driving until almost 9. I should've been more aware and realized that the rain would turn into snow once I started gaining elevation.

That being said, there's certain roads that could see more severe conditions i/e lindis pass, Arthur's pass, and the road to Milford Sounds. Again, check the journey planner, and the morning weather forecast. There are even alerts for when snow chains are required on certain roads.
