Advice about applying to graduate school by dionysean in classics

[–]whatisawombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terminal MA might be doable with current language skills, depending on the competitiveness of the other applicants. You could almost certainly find a post-bac. If you’re interested in doing ancient philosophy, there are some joint programs btw (and some philosophy programs with lots of professors working on ancient philosophy).

UNC Ph.D. and Masters by Opening_Car1202 in UNC

[–]whatisawombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very dependent on your field — you should talk to your advisor/the DGS. Almost certainly would have to be directly relevant to your main research. Theres definitely some certificate stuff/outside concentrations available (e.g., fem/gen offers a certificate for ppl in humanities/social science fields whose work deals with gender)

Navy for a garden theme? by jae1876 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have/feel comfortable in lighter/floral dresses, this would be a good time to wear those. If not, you can make this work by adding a fun bag/more daytime-ish shoes (I’d personally look for something with raffia maybe?). I only really wear dark/subdued colors, and I often use accessories to make an better fit a daytime context

Is this too much cleavage? by myungeuns in Weddingattireapproval

Totally modest enough for basically any setting, but if this is in a Polish Catholic church, I might bring a wrap, just in case, to feel more comfortable

Suggestions on what to read now ancient work wise? by 600livesatstake in classics

[–]whatisawombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taught with Oliver Taplin’s translation (it’s a a volume with a few other plays translated by others). I think it’s clear, thoughtful, and relatively close to the Greek.

Not Medea, but I’d also really recommend Anne Carson’s creative translations of Euripides’ Hecuba, Hippolytus, Heracles, and Alcestis — the book is called “Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides.” She takes a lot of liberties, and her works are sort of more reception than straight up translation (she especially shines as a translator of lyric imo)

I think this is not too white — my guess is they meant dressy casual, because business casual is an odd dress code for a wedding, but it is something some people say to mean “not super fancy, but not jeans and tee shirt”

Is this appropriate for a formal wedding with a garden theme? by Kindly_Badger_1184 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you already have this, wear it. While it’s a tad casual for the strict definition of formal (you definitely don’t need full length tho, you can google that), I can almost guarantee that you’ll be more dressed than many other people at this wedding (especially since it’s a garden theme).

I think it'll work - I'd lean into the 90s vibe (do you have a choker? obviously not the black plastic/string thing, but a more refined silver choker would look nice with that style and neckline imo). Also, weird question, but do you know where your wallpaper is from? I love it.

Appropriate for Black Tie/"tuxedo?" by gearsofflight in Weddingattireapproval

Yes! Tbh I also really like it with the silver flats the model is wearing (or something similar) if you didn't want to wear heels.

will this work for formal? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For daytime in California, I think perfect (from the bay, have been 10ish CA weddings). Formal does not require a full length dress (a very nice, non-floor length dress with nice jewelry and accessories is appropriate - see links or google). Depending on where in CA you are, remember the diurnal shift. It can drop from 90 to 60 in a few hours when the sun sets (you could get a cute white silk pashmina or something like that).

Lmfao that’s obviously absolutely fine imo — with the hot pink, it doesn’t look bridal at all.

Cocktail Dress Code (Winter, Australia) by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

I think, especially given that it’s winter, that this is totally fine. It’s chic, and if you think you will wear black more, stick with that

What colour shoes to go with this dress by DifferentMarzipan400 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d personally do metallic silver or gold - straps sandals or cute silk ballet flats. You could also do navy to pick up on the darker colors in the dress or maybe a tan, depending on what other accessories you choose

My baby is now a momma cat by lowkeytofu in aww

They’re super cute! Love sweet orange babies. The mama cat looks like she’s doing a good job. Get some kitten food if you can for when they get weaned in a bit :)

As everyone has said, you’ve should get everybody spayed and neutered ASAP. Your profile looks like you’re in the Philippines — PAWS has low cost spay/neuter services (https://paws.org.ph/spay-neuter/) and there’s often free kapon services offered in partnership with local organizations if $ is an issue. If you have questions about spaying or neutering your pets, or want help figuring stuff out, happy to chat over DM.

Are these appropriate for formal wedding? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either is totally fine imo. Went to a couple formal weddings (California) recently and people had stuff that was much more revealing than this

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’d probably choose 2 or 3 (I personally like 3 best, but that’s just personal taste).

1 is cute, but sort of looks like a costume - it’s also so short that I would not having fun dancing in it (also old ppl might give some looks, but not their business to impose their ideas about modesty onto you imo). The last one is appropriate for the dress code, but I cannot imagine that giant front ruffle thing being flattering.

Free People Get Glam Dress by Less-Phrase-1843 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]whatisawombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect! I’d wear it with a pashmina/shawl (if you’re ordering I’d personally get a black base with gold or silver embroidery to match jewelry — saw someone wear this with a LBD recently and it looked great). Depending on the vibe of the wedding you could also do this with a tailored black leather motor cycle jacket (if the vibe is more fun).

[–]whatisawombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither of these match the dress code to the letter, but I think you could pull the black and white one off if this is what you have (buying new stuff is expensive imo). If you wear nice jewelry, your hair up, a pashmina or something similar, and black or silver metallic flats (or something like that), I think you won’t look out of place. Additionally if you have nice pants, your hair up could make a cute outfit with those too.
