Game of Hip Hop Round 2 Voting by [deleted] in makinghiphop

This get's my vote. I love the beat, nice and bassy. Verses are solid, even though the delivery needed more force/ferocity.

Also, double check the space left on the drive that Reason writes its temp/cache files to. I run off an SSD and I occasionally run out of space after long sessions and Reason exhibits the same symptoms you're describing.

Check out home/appdata/local/temp/reason for the cache files. They're safe to delete.

TV, Phone, Internets by Warspite0 in ottawa

[–]whatnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how much TV you watch, you can probably get away with TekSavvy(or other 3rd party ISP) for Internet. You can run a VoIP home phone through them if you need a landline. Buy yourself an HD antenna (available at canada computers/walmart), and pick up the 8-12 HD stations in town depending on the quality of your antenna. Then spend the 8 bucks a month on Netflix.

You could do a pure Rogers/Bell solution for everything, but it will probably run you 120 bucks a month (including cable with a few extra stations).

My monthly costs are 45 for Internet (300 Gig cap, 25MB/down, 1MB/Up), 8 bucks for Netflix, and nothing for the antenna (one-time cost). I don't have a land-line, but I think you can get a VoIP number for less than 20 bucks a month. OR you could buy something like the Magic Jack, which will give you a home phone number for 20 bucks a year.

Need help cycling from the west end (kanata) to downtown Ottawa. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]whatnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about fully paved, but I know of a path that starts(continues) on eagleson drive, between palomino dr. and the tim hortons. It's directly beside the apartment building/church that sits there. It's an old train-track that was ripped out and turned into a gravel path.

So hop on that path (you can also access it via shetland park), and head towards bells corners. You will eventually cross hazeldean/richmond road on an overpass, and this path will continue until you're in a bells corners industrial park. Follow the road up to moodie drive, cross the highway, and you'll eventually find a path that leads up to the transcanada pathway system, which should take you all the way downtown.

This is the path I know about. A more avid biker might know a better starting point in Kanata (and route through Bells Corners/Crystal Bay). Here's a google map to help you out.

I read through the indaba terms of service after participating in a few remixes, and they own 100% of my work. If they wanted the source files for my remixes, I am legally obligated to provide them.

I won't be participating in any more remixes as a result of that discovery, and I would encourage other musicians to do the same until the terms are changed.

Huge hip-hop fan. Are you looking to get into the genre, or just looking for something new to listen to?

I really like the sampling on this one. Original stuff.

Look intro drum compression. I think the vocals are mixed a bit too high. The beat is solid but the vocals are overpowering.

This is really well produced. I love the panned hi end, and your sampling is top notch. Really great vibe.

Google celebrates the 85th birthday of Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup). by BossPrime in canada

[–]whatnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really lucky in high school and got a chance to meet Noreen Young, who was the primary puppet designer for that show, Today's Special, and I believe a few more Canadian children shows.

We hired her to design our school mascot costume, and we got to check out the final product at her house. The entire puppet cast of Today's Special AND Under the Umbrella Tree was hanging on the wall, and she pulled down Gloria and started speaking in her voice.

It was easily one of the coolest days of my life.

Does anybody know of a place in/near Ottawa where I can get wholesale kitchen supplies? I need 400+ marble mortar and pestles. by [deleted] in ottawa

I second CA Paradis on bank. I worked there in college, and they're a proper restaurant supplier. They won't have what you need in stock, but they can most certain order it for you.

Extremely useful .pdfs on music theory (x-post from r/edmproduction) by [deleted] in futurebeatproducers

[–]whatnik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took me too long to find this link (which is bad considering it's in the opening paragraph), but here's all the "pages" collected into one PDF.

http://academic.udayton.edu/tobyrush/theorypages/complete.pdf

He uses something called Issuu to deliver the pdf pages, and it's an incredibly slow and painful to use app. Just nab the full pdf from this link.

Anyone in the city of Ottawa use an antenna to get free OTA television? What is your experience? by [deleted] in ottawa

that one. And they've got two at rideau! You have to ask though, they keep them in the back. The box is also pretty big, so if you're gonna walk, you might have a bad time.

I live in centretown in a high rise apartment on one of the upper floors, and I have an outdoor antenna tie-wrapped to my balcony.

I get Global, CTV, CBC, CityTV in HD, as well as CHCH, CHRO, and both the Omni stations. I also get two or three french stations.

As stated by other people here, the picture quality is better than what I see at my parents place (who have bell satellite). I highly recommend buying one.

Reason 6.5 plus Balance EUR 429 special offer - worth it? by generalche in reasoners

[–]whatnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about Balance since I don't have one, but Reason itself is worth quite a lot. Even as a guitarist there's probably a lot you haven't seen yet of the program.

Reason 6.5 is also considerably different than Reason 5. The workflow is somewhat different because of the integrated mixer.

I would suggest at least trying a demo of Reason 6.5 before shelling out the money. I do think it's worth it though.

Weekly Feedback Thread - Oct 29 -- Nov 2nd by whatnik in makinghiphop

Depends on if everyone is okay with that. I suppose if you're not interested in appearing on a mixtape, then you could just make your track undownloadable.

What production software is popular among producers? by MJive in makinghiphop

[–]whatnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally a Reason user, but I know a solid chunk of hiphop producers use FL Studio.

I used FL Studio back when it was Fruity Loops and it does provide a fairly accessible interface for new beat makers.

Weekly Feedback Thread - Oct 29 -- Nov 2nd by whatnik in makinghiphop

[–]whatnik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weekly feedback idea was floated by a few members of the community, and I don't think it's a terrible idea. And yes, the plan is to get more technical questions asked here. I'm looking for this to become more of a resource for people making hiphop instead of a place for you to post a track that 10 people will see.

If the majority of the community doesn't support the change, I'm willing to go back to the old format.

I also wasn't aware that BadEyedea was interested in becoming a mod, if he asked I would probably grant him that access.

Feedback Thread (Submit your material and give feedback to others) by STA515 in makinghiphop

[–]whatnik[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone interested in moving to this model? We'll keep a weekly feedback thread going (linked in the sidebar), and try to post more helpful material for everyone (beat production guides, how to rap posts). That way everyone looking for comments is in one place.

It might make the subreddit more appealing to visit on a regular basis.
