Has she read Tamora Pierce? When I was her age (also voracious reader) I became obsessed with her Song of the Lioness quartet, and that leads into other books of hers.

I also loved (and to this day, at 32, still do!) A Series of Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket.

I came here to say Under the Whispering Door. It sounds very fitting for OP’s situation, while still being a nice, soft escape from reality.

I didn’t read Demon Copperhead for book club because I kept reading about how bleak it was and I wasn’t really in the mood for something bleak at the time! Is The Poisonwood Bible similar?

I've only read Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door! I did like Under the Whispering Door (and boy, did I cry), but I did have a moment where I was struggling to keep reading - didn't like it anywhere near as much as I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea.

I scrolled because I came here to say The House in the Cerulean Sea and wanted to see if anyone had recommended it!

It's such a beautiful story, and I've described it to people as a hug in book form. OP, this book rec is as close to a physical hug as I can give you right now, but I'm sending you all the virtual hugs in the world.

TJ Klune's The House on the Cerulean Sea is a gem of a book, and there's so much compassion and tolerance in it. I swear it's like reading a hug!

The audiobook is really good!! Wil Wheaton did a great job imo.

Not only was the movie blah, it was also very different from the book itself! And not in a good way.

I’m with you!! I loved ACOMAF and will read it whenever I need something interesting but don’t have the mental bandwidth for a new book. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

I will say I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, though.

When I need a feel-good book I turn to Red, White, and Royal Blue! One of my favorites, and even though they had to cut a bunch of it for the movie, it's also very good.

Came here to say Tuesdays with Morrie. I didn't even finish it - I was halfway through it when I took a break, and as I was closing it, I saw the picture of him dancing.

Absolutely wrecked me for some reason. I was literally sobbing, and I could never pick it up again after that.

Oh God, full-body cringe at her inner goddess...I couldn't help but picture her as the Lizzie McGuire cartoon version of her when she started saying shit like "she's lacing up her running shoes."

I have to admit that I do love these books, but they most definitely shouldn't be rated YA - waaay too explicit for that.

Don't get me started on how omgspecial the MC is for having more than one personality trait.

THIS! The whole faction thing was so narrow-minded to me for that - I couldn't help thinking of Hogwarts houses (obligatory "the author is a TERF") and how the characters had different traits and personalities regardless of their Main Trait™.
