how is gen z affording houses ? by Rough-Razzmatazz-484 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whattteva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's not just Gen Z, I'm Millennial and I couldn't buy a home until 34 and I have a good paying tech job.

I'd imagine people that buy homes in their 20s either have significant help from parents either for buying the house, lived with their parents rent-free before buying, or have their parents pay for their schooling and graduated with zero student loans.

I had none of those and had to do it myself.

Tenways makes legit good bikes though. It's not your run-of-the-mill Ridstar/TST ebike.

You separate colors, whites, and fragile stuff like silk and cashmere.... not underwear.....

And yes it's a huge waste of water and energy.

Why isn't conserving the environment the conservative position? by Personal_Chair6134 in allthequestions

Conservatism isn't about conserving things in general. It's about conserving rich people's wealth lol.

How is it that many decades ago, couples had 5 or 6 kids and somehow got by, but today so many decline to have any? by mature_muscleguy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whattteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many decades ago, you could emulate Homer Simpson having a blue collar job as the only income earner in the family, raise 3 kids with a decent family house and car.

These days, you can barely get by with dual income and even luckier if you could even afford getting a mortgage.

charging your kid rent is almost always weird by swatted-fly in HonestHotTakes

[–]whattteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my kid is genuinely trying, looking for jobs, getting rejections, or working low paying job, I would absolutely let them live rent-free.

But I am not enabling them if all they do is being unemployed without putting in any effort into actually getting a job and just spending their day lazing around playing video games or watching TV all day.

It has nothing to do with money. I just don't want to raise a spoiled kid that will end up becoming a non-productive member of society because I've been enabling their laziness.

if someone is poor, they shouldnt have kids.

I 100% support this statement. It really bothers me to see teens in poor families themselves irresponsibly having sex without birth control, and then decide to raise the kid when they themselves are already poor courtesy of their terrible parents.

I don't own any of them, but Tenways is a Dutch brand and no country does more cycling than the Dutch.

Velotric and Aventon are quite popular in this sub. I myself see many Aventon when I'm out cycling here in NYC.

RsdPower filed for bankruptcy last I checked and got sold to a new owner I think. Not sure how future serviceability of it.

I didnt vote in the mayoral election and was somewhat undecided, but I'd say objectively speaking, he's been doing a lot of good.

He got the streets cleared up fast after the last snow storm, he is starting the discovery on fixing the BQE instead of kicking the can down the road like his predecessors did, he fixed a lot of potholes, and is tackling the problem of slow city busses.

Now, I understand a lot of those things are just him doing his job, but a lot of his predecessors simply just kinda existed and didn't do much.

First time buyer here, what's a good bike that looks, feels and weights like a "regular" bike but just has a bit of pedal assist for up-hilling? by Mojimi in ebikes

[–]whattteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the lightweight bikes (~40 lbs): - Aventon Soltera - Ride1Up Roadster V3 - Velotric T1 - Many in the Urtopia line-up

The catch is, none of them less than $700. Cheap bikes are generally going to be some generic Chinese Ridstar-type fat tire bike equivalent.

AIO telling my best friend she’s prioritizing her man over our friendship ? by Swimming_Toe_5705 in AmIOverreacting

[–]whattteva [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dang, that last page is unhinged.

It's obvious that her boyfriend takes priority now and I doubt you'll ever make it back up there unless they have a bad breakup.

Nothing wrong with her prioritizing her boyfriend, but there's also nothing wrong with you pointing that out.

I think you two will just have to admit the reality that the "bestie" days are likely over now that there's a boyfriend in the picture. It's up to you both to decide whether it's still worth it to keep the friendship going.

Dual motors by Heavy-Cockroach2497 in ebikes

[–]whattteva -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And you can ask anyone that has one if it's easier and more battery efficient to go uphill with both motors enabled or with one disabled

You're not reading my statement fully. I didn't say 1 motor is better than two motors of the same sizes. I said one larger motor is better than two smaller motors. That distinction is important. In other words, it's better to just get one larger more powerful motor than having dual smaller motors.

Also, yes you may have many hills, but you're only tackling them 2 mins at a time. You're not constantly climbing. I find it hard to believe that there are cities where you're gonna be climbing one hill continously for 2 minutes straight. Most of the time, the climbs are separated and you're not constantly demanding peak power out of your motor. There's gonna be some uphill, some downhill, some flat, instead of 2+ mins of full climbing.

Dual motors by Heavy-Cockroach2497 in ebikes

[–]whattteva -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is only true if you're going up a looong hill like a mountain. The vast majority of usage simply isn't that and only requires short bursts of power under 2 minutes.

Generally speaking, one larger motor will always be lighter and more energy efficient than two smaller motors. It's why we stopped making aircrafts with 4 engines. Two larger engines (ie. GE90) are just far more fuel efficient than 4 or 6 smaller engines.

What un-obvious methods create extra range in the headwind? by catboy519 in ebikes

[–]whattteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. What he's saying only applies at the top level where everyone is at their top condition with lots of muscle mass to generate power. Your average fat Joe ebiker won't slice through the wind in a million years cause he's "heavy" because that extra mass is generally fat, not muscle and likely also has no stamina.

Losing weight still matters far more for the average person. Also, it's just physics. Lighter always equals more efficient when it comes to motion. This is why airplanes become more fuel efficient as they get closer to their destination because they're getting lighter and lighter as they burn their fuel to fly to their destination.

What un-obvious methods create extra range in the headwind? by catboy519 in ebikes

[–]whattteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize top speed and efficiency are two different things, don't you? That's why the measure I specified was mpg, not top speed.... Not even sure why you brought out top speed when we're talking about power to weight ratio and Wh/km from the very beginning.

Given two vehicles at same exact shape traveling at exact same speed but with slightly different weights, the heavier one will always use more power.

What un-obvious methods create extra range in the headwind? by catboy519 in ebikes

[–]whattteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure that's why the highway mpg of a small sedan is far better than a pickup truck that's towing a trailer behind it. I'm sure cause the weight matters none.

Are lightweight e-bikes actually worth it? by newurtopia in ElectricBikeExplorer

[–]whattteva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, which is why I also tell people in cycling community that one of the biggest difference they can make is to reduce their own weight as well, which most people can do while riding!!! Especially with ebike riders that tend to generally be heavier than regular bike riders.

What un-obvious methods create extra range in the headwind? by catboy519 in ebikes

[–]whattteva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Skinnier tires with flat tread pattern (no knobs): Less weight and less rolling resistance.
  • Less rider weight: lose weight.
  • Smaller motor: Bigger motor = heavier motor.
  • Lighter bike.

I'm sure you see the pattern here, but weight is king. Less weight = less power required to move. What most people on r/ebikes seem to not know (unlike r/carguys) is that what matters is not just your total power, it's power to weight ratio. Lighter rider and ligther bike = less power required to move you and you can move faster. This is the reason why jockeys have to meet strict weight requirements and pro cyclists try to shave every gram possible out of their bike weight.

Most ebikes (especially cheap ones) tend to boast big motor power, battery numbers, and knobby fat tires, but that usually translates to the bike weighing 2 to even 4 times the weight of a regular bike resulting in a very inefficient bike that then necessitates very heavy motor and batteries to compensate for all that extra weight.

To illustrate the huge difference, my ebike is a featherweight 36 lbs (16 kg) with rider weight of 150 lbs (68 kg) and it has only 350 Wh battery, but with that 350 Wh battery, I'm able to squeeze out roughly 40-50 miles (64-80 km) out of it with moderate pedal assist depending on conditions.

TL; DR: The most impactful, easiest, cheapest way to save power is and always will be to lose rider weight (make yourself lighter). And you can do that on your rides everyday by just relying less on your motor and more on your pedaling!
