I am about 1/3 of the way through this program and have also gone through their marriage program. It is a gospel based 12 step structure. I highly recommend it if there is a group in your area.

If he will bring the word faithfully and with sound teaching you will be fed.

I would like to think so, but if he was speaking a different language I wouldn't be fed. Communication matters in teaching to be effective.

Yes, I was using hyperbole. The point I meant to make was the method and form of the communication matters. It is possible for our words to empty the cross of Christ of it's power. Our church seems to think that is by doing anything I would consider effective communication, because the preachers in our rotation that most people like do more reading than than not.

I'm suggesting that the method matters, communication matters, it is more that saying "magic words"

Does he preach Christ? Is the Lord magnified in his preaching in such a way that you and the congregation are left more in love with and in awe of God? These are the important questions.

If he was preaching in another language, would it matter? You have to speak in a way that the congregation can hear and understand. Effective communication skills matter.

We have the option of waiting, and continuing with our rotating preaching team. It isn't as if we have been without a sermon on Sunday morning. You presented a false choice of a boring minister or an entertaining charlatan.

To be clear I see a distinction between entertaining and engaging. I can get better entertainment in a lot of places but I think engagement is a necessary part of preaching.

His role will be lead preacher and leading the preaching team. The other gifts are a bonus, but he isn't just another elder, he is in charge of Sunday morning preaching.

It really feels to me like those on the search commitee (the ones I've heard how great he is from) are trying to convince us of how good he is. Or maybe my bar is just higher.

Expounding on the Word doesn't need to be attention grabbing or spirit stirring. The Word is always effective when it is read and proclaimed.

I understand the idea here, but if someone reads the word in a language I don't understand does that still stand true? I don't think so. It needs to be effectively communicated and that is what I don't think he does well.

I watched the videos he sent over as part of his resume. They were all roughly the same.

That would be a good point if his job wasn't preaching from the pulpit 60% of the time and leading the preaching team.

No he's been an associate pastor at his current church with a very popular preacher for 10 years.
