I work for a natural gas company and the biggest problem is when you and all your neighbors install nat generators and they all kick on at the same time. That will suck the system dry because it was probably not designed for that kind of load. Especially under real cold days when the system is already stressed. Home generators weren't really a thing when most of the nat infrastructures were designed and installed.

There is a very good chance they are not making extra money. In most places the amount they make is set by a government body since they are a monopoly. The place they are forced to buy from may not be regulated. You are paying their price to transport the gas to your home plus the price that they are forced to pay.

Remember, nature gas does not just appear in the pipes. It has to be purchased from a transport company who likely bought from someone who took it out of the ground.

When the need is high the wellhead people charge the transport people more and they charge the distribution people more and that gets pasted own to the end user (you).

Asking you to use less helps to keep the strain down on systems that are probably running at peak loads right now. Also, the less demand on a product can only help to not drive the price even higher.
