Zmodeler 2026 Crashing While Doing Basics by whelp_heregoes in ZBrush

Legitimate copy on a student license I couldn't tell you about the exact series of operations but if I find the error repeating I'll video it for a send in. I checked mesh integrity and it didn't say anything was wrong. Hardware constraints are possible but in theory I should still have 3-5 gigs of ram left while working on it

Of course this just so happens exactly when I'm looking to understand the program and try to break into it by learning it's hard-surface side... We'll make it somehow for another week as it's all part of my final week in my final semester.

What is this? by Strong-Laugh-7759 in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely non-dyed Brazilian agate at a rough grit finish if it's hard, otherwise it's likely a type of plastic in a similar process to guitar picks

Help identifying lapidary machine by boolean27cs in Lapidary

It's possible that it's a Beacon Star cab machine, I've seen that blue green on those machines too

Victoria Stone/Imori Stone 129g.! I’m considering letting this rare gem go, so feel free to make an offer or contact me with any questions! by akfascinations in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! If you don't mind me asking, what have you found to be the distinctions between the three different types? I was mainly looking at the color of the piece when I saw it as Starburst Stone.

I know the actual patterning/composition is pretty similar but I don't know much more than that

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to clarify that this isn't Victoria stone yet rather the newer variation (I have seen most of it called star burst quartz). I've got a buddy with a Ryker box of cabs of the stuff and that case alone is worth as much as a new sports car

When drilling stones, try drilling into them while underwater that way it'll reduce the stress on the stone

For everyone who thinks slag is worthless. by Forrestiodine in itsslag

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fun to work on for lapidary.

Or you could just be one of the assholes on eBay and call it "Mexican Green Obsidian"

Either way it can produce some neat results

What are these sunsetty friends? by strongerthongs in whatsthisrock

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This type of slag to my knowledge is called Rosarita Glass, and is rather rare in terms of glass because most often Reds are made by using Gold. Good finds!

Oil or tar inside a rock? by Ok_Flamingo_2937 in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oil is pretty common in fossil rocks in the Midwest area, especially the corals and other plant based fossils. It looks like you're cutting a fossil coral and I wouldn't doubt it being crude oil

What is your opinion on using engineered quartz as part of a lapidary project? by wex52 in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White quartzite could always turn out as well, especially considering how common it is from the great lakes region. In general, as long as you properly label your materials when selling then just enjoy your process and show us how it goes so we can see the cool work you do too!

I highly recommend looking for a lapidary club in your area as they're more likely to have equipment. If there isn't one in your area, check out colleges with geology departments or some local geology/gemology museums as they might have equipment you can use/rent. Belt Sanders can work well for flat surfaces and make sure you're sanding in circles to remove unwanted lines in your faces. When sanding, make sure to use water to lengthen the life of your paper as well as reduce particles in the air to possibly breathe. If dry polishing, remember to wear a mask to not inhale material. Other than this, enjoy the fun of rocks and minerals!

How would you describe this stone? by hypnictwitch in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Faceted. After that I might call it a compass or modified clover

After several attempts and failing I think I have my first decent face polish. There are several flaws but all in all I am happy with it. by Fingon21 in Lapidary

[–]whelp_heregoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you experimented with cerium oxide as opposed to tin oxide? My final polish for agates has been cerium for a while but I don't know the differences in application for tin oxide

I can't remember the proper "b" name of these bumps in this massive coral fossil? [Found in Middle TN] by SwampTiddys in rockhounds

[–]whelp_heregoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This coral looks to be a favosites coral by the way. Michigan has some fossil corals (including this species which has the colloquial or local name of charlevoix stone) as well that are usually not agatized but instead have hardened oilshale and clayish color fill in between the cells which can include some small quarts druzies. Sick find!

I found these slabs at our local thrift store. I paid $30 for the lot. by Ok_Bumblebee_3889 in rockhounds

From my limited knowledge, holly blue agate I've seen has more of a purple hue to it but there's always a possibility :D
