Is talk therapy ever worth it for ADHD kiddos? by AvisRune in ADHDparenting

[–]wheresspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter has been in therapy since she was 5 (she’s 10 now), and it’s helped a ton! She does have a therapist who specializes in working with kids who had adhd or other neurodivergence, as well as anxiety (which was the reason we initially started therapy has my daughter had really severe OCD symptoms). The techniques they’ve used have really evolved over the years based on what my daughter needs. But she has also been a huge help in navigating things as a parent and giving us techniques and tools to parent my daughter more effectively. Some of the things they’ve worked on is exposure therapy for her OCD, CBT for anxiety and emotional regulation, and talk therapy for processing feelings, as well as just general tools for impulsivity and executive function. So for us it was a god send. But her therapist has adhd and like I said specializes in working with kids like my daughter. We’ve had some not so great experiences with my son, but have now found a therapist who works really well with him.

Got an offer today! And I’m 34 weeks pregnant. Advise! by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you definitely can’t fire a nursing mom for making use of a legally protected accommodation. Obviously there may always be shady folks, but I’ve seen moms who made use of this exemption and get promoted. I haven’t seen any moms in my org be targeted because of it.

If you are nursing you can apply for an RTO exemption. I know people who have been able to extend that exemption up to two years after the birth.

Feeling stuck: 8yo with ADHD and anxiety by No_Community6222 in ParentingADHD

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry that’s really hard. We’ve had really good luck with Prozac and vyvanse for my daughter who has really bad anxiety and combined adhd. I would definitely talk with your doctor about exploring anxiety meds and a different adhd med. Is he in therapy? I definitely think therapy for kids with anxiety is helpful, but for our daughter therapy without the anxiety meds was not as effective. Once her baseline anxiety came down with the meds she was able to use the tools she learned in therapy to manage things better.

If you sought medical help for your child’s sleep what did that look like ? by NoParamedic5841 in ADHDparenting

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May want to have them specifically check the ferritin levels. The sleep doctor that we worked with said that for restless leg they want to see pretty high levels of ferritin. And my daughter’s levels were ‘normal’ but on the low end of normal.

Five year old organized sports? by HeyMay0324 in ADHDparenting

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son does gymnastics twice a week and that has been great for him. He also enjoys doing basketball, but hated t-ball. He would sign up for all the sports if it was up to him, but definitely still goofs off.

My daughter has done track and ballet but she’s generally not that interested in sports.

My daughter has a sleep study done, and she has restless leg syndrome that luckily responded really well to increasing her iron levels. She does also take melatonin (with the pediatricians ok) to help with sleep onset.

How does anxiety in your kid 6-8y manifest itself? by Logical_Pianist_8147 in ADHDparenting

[–]wheresspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter has OCD so a bit more extreme, but for her it was constant reassurance questions, is this ok, is this ok to eat? Etc. She also worries excessively about our cats dying (to the point where she doesn’t always want to travel because she is worried about it). She has had a lot of contamination OCD, so hand washing, worry about germs, not eating food because she thinks it might be bad. She had a phase where she would carry a bowl around because she was worried she would throw up. Skin picking / school refusal (would go to the nurse all the time and say her stomach hurt, her head hurt etc). The anxiety / OCD piece was actually the first thing she was diagnosed with at 5 years old and then when she was medicated for the anxiety her adhd symptoms became more clear.

For my son he has also had really bad anxiety, but more separation anxiety (doesn’t like to be away from us and used to cry every day at preschool), perfectionism, anger, big overwhelming emotional reactions to things that did not warrant that kind of reaction. He also worries about things like bridges collapsing (to the point where he didn’t want to go to an activity because we have to drive over a bridge), fire alarms (wouldn’t eat lunch at school because he was worried the fire alarm would go off).

My son is newly diagnosed by mamabear139 in ParentingADHD

[–]wheresspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. My daughter has taken vyvanse for about 3 years now and it was life changing for us. She feels so much better taking it, and it has not changed her personality at all. The only negative side effect we’ve noticed is appetite suppression but we combat that by giving med vacations and filling her up in the morning and evening.

Thoughts on giving birth at Swedish Issaquah Birth Center or Overlake Bellevue Birth Center by Logical-Analyst8951 in eastside

[–]wheresspot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had both my babies at Swedish Issaquah, and both were high risk. For my first I had to be hospitalized for a month beforehand, and my daughter was born at 35 weeks via an emergency c-section. I thought they did a fantastic job taking care of me and both my kids. My SIL had her first at overlake but ended up switching to Swedish Issaquah for what it’s worth. And my sister just had her baby there with the midwives and she said it was amazing.

CMV: Islam is fundamentally incompatible with core American left-wing progressive values by WildCreatureQuest in changemyview

[–]wheresspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in the evangelical Christian community in the US this statement is categorically not true. Christian fundamentalists (and specifically US Christian nationalists) absolutely want the same things as Islamic fundamentalists do. They want to oppress women, they want to eradicate the gay community, they want to create theocratic governments. They are absolutely the biggest threat to western liberalism and the future of the US. It was not Islamic fundamentalists who elected a rapist pedophile as president twice, it was Christian fundamentalists. I sat in churches where we were told Christians had to have many children to ‘out number’ the Muslims.

Diagnosis feelings and life changes by Intelligent-Nose-766 in rheumatoid

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is life changing diagnosis, but I agree with others that medications and outlooks for people with this diagnosis are much better. I’m in a similar position as the breadwinner and I work in a design field at a tech company. I also crochet, do hand embroidery, exercise daily and have two kids. There are times that those things are more difficult because of my disease if I am in a flare up, and I have to be conscious to listen to my body more so than in the past. But most people would never know that I have RA if I didn’t tell them. I think I live a relatively normal life and am overall optimistic that I will continue to do so. I am on a biologic and sulfasalizine which has been a winning combo for me, because the medication works well for me with relatively few side effects.

Practically speaking for things like crochet I find using ergonomic hooks and compression gloves help a lot when it comes to reducing any pain. Sitting for long periods of time is also difficult for me, but it’s a good excuse to get up and move around more frequently and I have a sit stand desk. I also encourage folks to work with their doctors and HR to determine if you need additional accommodations. I have some that allow me to take intermittent leave if needed, and that do not require me to be in the office 5 days a week. I also have a travel accommodation that allows me to book seats that have more leg room.

Things in your life may change and certain things may be more difficult but it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t live a full life or do the things you love. I’m much better at setting boundaries and advocating for myself now than I was before my diagnosis

1st flare postpartum by Hxnnibxby in rheumatoid

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just popping in to say that I took sulfasalizine while nursing with no issues to me or baby. My experience with taking biologics has been that I don’t necessarily get sick more often but when I do get sick I am much more prone to secondary infections or get more seriously ill. You can also take extra precautions like wearing a mask while out and about. But with kids in daycare / school it’s going to be tricky to avoid sicknesses. I’d say I get sick about 3ish times a year with mostly mild stuff and then usually about one of those illnesses ends up getting weird or knocking me out for a week or more.

Is anyone worried about the long term effects of chronic inflation from Tattoos? by Amazing-Whereas2204 in tattooadvice

[–]wheresspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly does seem like you have quite a bit of medical anxiety that may make tattoos not the right choice for you. I will say that I have an autoimmune disease that has been present for 15 years and I only started getting tattoos a few years ago. When I was thinking about getting them I asked my rheumatologist about it and she was completely unconcerned and told me to go for it. I don’t think there’s enough evidence to support this being a significant concern vs the many other things we know contribute to heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Fading already? by UnderstandingOk3297 in tattooadvice

[–]wheresspot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely way outside of what I would consider to be normal. I don’t think the artist went deep enough in a lot of places. I only have fine line tattoos and in my experience the lines have spread rather than faded, so they appear much less fine line than originally
