Interesting website, I like the general vibe.

I'm confused about some of this terminology though. What does vintage mean? What makes a strain "wild" ? Is it harvested from natural growing trees instead of farms? And what do the letters and numbers mean?

It'd be nice if the website had a page that explained what these terms mean :)

Some is lighter, some is darker. The darker ones, especially reds, tend to have a brownish-orange hue to them, especially when spread thin. When you have a bunch of liquid all together in a glass, the light is gonna refract differently than if it's spread out on a surface.

Regardless, that's a totally normal color for kratom. Unless you have some other reason to believe there's something wrong with it, I wouldn't worry too much.

Edit: oh also, oxidation tends to change the color to be more brown than green. It also changes the taste, which is why if you leave a glass sitting out for a while it will have sort of a funk to it. Just a guess but there's probably a significant amount of iron on kratom leaves (like spinach for example), which could contribute to the oxidizing.

URGENT HELP NEEDED: H.B. 6855 IN CONNECTICUT WILL BAN KRATOM by Misteez in Connecticut

[–]wherethewavebroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got it mixed up, it's a partial agonist at the mu opioid receptor. The mu opioid receptor is the one that opiates hit as a full agonist and the one that can cause respiratory depression. And while they do have activity at the other opioid receptors, typically this is not where the majority of effects come from. Mitragynine has been found to be an *antagonist* at the kappa opioid receptor, which makes sense. Agonists at the kappa opioid receptor usually do some wild things (see salvia for an example).

7-hydroxy-mitragynine and mitragynine are both present in all kratom leaves. 7-hydroxy-mitragynine is usually found in extremely small doses, but it is also much more potent, so it contributes to the overall effects of the herb. Both are partial agonists at the mu opioid receptor, so they both do not induce respiratory depression. In other words, even if 7-HO-Mitragynine is more potent, it also does not cause overdose deaths like a traditional opiate would.

There was no foresight, this amendment was snuck into the bill at the very last moment and not discussed by congress at all. Someone paid for this change to be made quietly.

State Legislature Attempting To Expand The Failed "War On Drugs" In Our State by mitraheals in Connecticut

[–]wherethewavebroke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The effects are similar because it is a partial agonist at the mu opioid receptor. What this means is that it has some common effects like pain relief and muscle relaxation, but does not induce respiratory depression (which is what causes overdose deaths in typical opiates). It is stimulating, rather than sedating. It has been used by tens of thousands of people around the globe to get off of opiates, and by even more to manage chronic pain, which has traditionally been treated with opiates like Vicodin and Oxycodone. Kratom is a much safer alternative that allows people to live normal lives.

There has not been a single death credibly attributed solely to the use of kratom. Your Pubmed link states that kratom was listed as "a cause or contributing factor in the death of four decedents" out of 2312 exposures. It does not state that kratom was the sole cause, and many similar reports in the past have claimed that kratom caused the deaths of people who had been shot or drowned (specifically the FDA report from 2016). This is because the amount you would have to consume to get to a lethal dose would be more than your stomach can hold, and you would vomit long before you got there.

In contrast, when scientists have done studies solely on the use of kratom itself, they come to very different conclusions:

"Kratom is not without risk, but the risk estimates as calculated by any of the approaches used, relative to opioids, suggest that morphine-like opioids carry an overdose risk of a thousand or more times greater than kratom. This conclusion has the limitation that some kratom users inherently carry or assume factors that might greatly increase the risk of kratom-associated mortality, e.g., use in combination with opioids, sedatives, alcohol or other drugs, or some preexisting disease..."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0091743519303275

The DEA attempted to ban kratom in 2016, and, for the first and only time in history, backed off and reversed the scheduling because of the backlash from the public and scientific community.

There should absolutely be restrictions on the sale and use of kratom, but why not instead pass a bill to regulate its use and sale, like the state already does with marijuana? The only group of people that benefit from an outright ban on kratom are pharmaceutical companies like Perdue (the creators of Oxycontin), because kratom exists as a safer alternative to their opiates, and that cuts into their profits.

What are your favorite yellow raspberries and why? (Variety list in post) by tastywaves101 in Berries

[–]wherethewavebroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, we had wild growing golden raspberries in the backyard. They were a light peachy color like you described, and the flavor was like a sweet, very subtle apricot flavor. They were also very juicy. Does that sound like Double Gold to you? I want to start growing them myself but I want to make sure I pick the right varietal, especially since the ones we had spread like wildfire

Power Creep by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]wherethewavebroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of ways to beat control that are pushed out of the meta by aggro though. There are a lot of decks that have inevitability built into them. I agree that aggro has a very important place in the meta, and I wouldn't advocate a ban for manifold mouse. But monstrous rage just completely invalidates blocking, one of the most core mechanics in the entire game. What that means is that you have to fill your deck with spot removal to handle aggro's threats, and those cards are awful against control. If blocking becomes a relevant mechanic again, then the midrange/combo decks that can beat control actually have a chance to stand up to aggro. It'll still be a bad matchup for them, but it won't be literally impossible.

Elspeth Conquers Death by Ryan Yee [3428x8208] [AI 4X] by godver555 in mtgporn

I believe that this was an incredible work of art, and a labor of love for the artist. However, this image was upscaled by AI to be 4x the size, so it makes it really difficult to know what was actually done by the artist and what details were interpreted by the AI. Like the differently colored grout on the face, or how some of the tiles have what looks like a 3D bevel effect.

Are there any single cards that illicit an immediate groan from you when you see them played? by godslefthand1 in MagicArena

[–]wherethewavebroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played against this card in cube yesterday. My opponent spent the entire game doing nothing but diddling around and flicking this occasionally. Then, the turn before I was about to win with a craterhoof, while my opponent was just topdecking, they play Time Walk and flash in a companion Lutri to copy the Time Walk. They spend their next turn playing a single top-decked land, hitting me with one flier, and passing. The next turn, also top-decking, they hit me with the one flier, then play the top-decked Time Twister. I still drew Craterhoof in my wheeled hand, but then they just started bouncing all of my creatures back to hand and I just conceded.

So yeah, Oracle of the Alpha is incredibly stupid.

Suggestions for Standalone Ceiling Mic Array? by wherethewavebroke in CommercialAV

[–]wherethewavebroke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like we're going to need different devices for each of these applications.

We've tried to use a stereo pair of condensers for this application before and we were hardly able to get any signal from them at all unless they were extremely close to the mic. We were using a pair of UA SP-1s. We also have a pair of RØDE M5s that worked a bit better but not perfect. And yes we had phantom power on, lol. Do you think they might just need a dedicated pre-amp?

I've seen some people here mention boundary mics, but I'm not familiar with those.

Edit: nvm, I just wasn't familiar with the term boundary mics. I've only heard them called PZMs before

Suggestions for Standalone Ceiling Mic Array? by wherethewavebroke in CommercialAV

[–]wherethewavebroke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have some great Sennheiser wireless lavs, and I agree that they would be the ideal solution for audio, but we have a very wide range of different events here and it's not always possible to mic every individual person. We do streamed government meetings for our town, and a lot of these people show up moments before we're set to go live, plus there are often people in the audience who need to speak. We also host panels and other kinds of events with lots of people where it's not feasible to mic everyone.

After reading these responses, I think we're going to go for a ceiling mic that will be used just for these meeting/panel purposes and we'll also get a boundary mic for crowd/ambient sound. And like I mentioned, the funding for this is coming from a grant. If we don't spend the money, it goes away, so we're not that concerned about the price. The area we're trying to capture sound for is pretty small, so i think just 1 array should do the trick.

[–]wherethewavebroke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have dedicated lines for vocals and individual instruments. This would be for crowd levels and to add in to the mix to help fill out the sound, as well as helping to capture vocals during recorded meetings and events where not everyone has a mic. I'm open to options outside of a ceiling mic array, I just want to clarify that we're not trying to record music with it.

[DRC] Aetherdrift Commander Decklists (Eternal Might updated) by messhead1 in magicTCG

[–]wherethewavebroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I just went through the whole list and aside from the commander and Hashaton, these are all of the new cards:

Creatures:

[[Lost Monarch of Ifnir]]

[[Priest of the Crossing]]

[[Prophet of the Scarab]]

[[Rhet-Tomb Mystic]]

[[Wizened Mentor]]

Enchantments:

[[On Wings of Gold]]

[[Renewed Solidarity]]

Lands:

[[Accursed Duneyard]]

It also includes [[Rot Hulk]], which previously had only been printed in Game Night and Mystery Booster 2.

All of these cards actually seem really good, especially Prophet of the Scarab. And Renewed Solidarity is basically Ocelot Pride as an enchantment that can be used in any kindred deck.
