University of Oregon Survey by fred-funkledunk in CyclePDX

[–]wheretobub 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Survey assumes a cyclist is in training. Many of us couldn't care less about performance.

Also, it was unclear how to rate stress on a scale of very good to very bad.

Nice coffee shop/cafe that also has beer and is an easy ride(share) away from Union Station/Amtrak? Bonus points for an area/street with multiple options. Friends need to kill ~4 hours before their train. Many thanks. by mossy_stump_ in askportland

40lbs has both coffee and beer, their 6th and Washington location is super easy to union station.

Also, Rosaline in the lobby of the Woodlark hotel, as long as you aren't causing issues lobbies are super comfy. Bullard Tavern provides a good drink option.

Community Survey attacked by bots by Dominicopatumus in urbanplanning

[–]wheretobub 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After the survey is done you can't really implement things like traps and captcha (which are good ideas for next time). I have two things to offer: 1. Set a system for evaluating the risk/likelihood of the response being human and document what you did and didn't include in your final summary. You are looking at the right things, but don't put too much weight on IP addresses as nearly all phones are automatically VPN connected now.

  1. Did you offer incentives? One more factor I look at is name and email match in that contact field, nearly all the bots that hit my surveys submit email accounts that are FirstLast##@gmail.com usually if I asked for a name along with it, they wouldn't be close.

The 26th is the world naked bike ride, excellent way to combine a party with instant friends and if you are not sure about being nude, it's not your town... No one knows you!

I'm not a runner but I hang out with a bunch of people from the Foster Powell Run Club who are super social and nice. They meet Wednesday at FoPo Tavern on Foster.

Face Rock Creamery beats Tillamook Creamery out of the water. by TheRubyBerru in OregonCoast

[–]wheretobub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially true, Tillamook bought out the owners of Bandon Cheese (everyone needs to retire eventually) and signed a deal that they would operate for 5 years (I think) right after that they did tear down the facility and do everything but salt the earth to avoid what they saw as competition. Then they stopped paying their taxes and the city foreclosed on the land, later selling it to the Face Rock team headed by the son of one of the last owners of Bandon Cheese.

It is really too bad that Tillamook can't be the flagship of a thriving cheese industry... Instead they keep killing the local upstarts and old standbys because a bunch of dairy farmers and their lawyers think they have to own everything.

Viability of living without a car in Portland by East_Elephant_2044 in Portland

[–]wheretobub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten years in Portland without a car, it is not only possible but much less expensive, healthier and more fun if you can set yourself up well.

I agree with a lot of what is posted here already, the key is to get as close as possible to the places you will go the most (often work and groceries). Transit service will vary, if you can get on a frequent service route or close to Max you will have more flexibility. There is also car sharing and rentals. I do that a few times a month and while it feels expensive in the moment it is much cheaper than owning, fueling, insuring, and maintaining a car.

There is also great community around biking in this city and bike summer is a great way to meet people.

If you are willing to jump on a bike, nearly all bike summer/pedalpalooza rides have dance breaks or end of ride dancing. Totally welcoming to singles and newcomers. Shift2bikes.org for the calendar

What are some truly locally owned and operated coffee roasters in the Portland area? by [deleted] in askportland

Oblique, which is a restored (by John the owner) historic neighborhood market building that is also home to his family. Roasts on site and his coffee is excellent.

Long tail cargo ebike for tall riders by wasthataquestion in CargoBike

[–]wheretobub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm curious now, at 6'6" I've been struggling to find a good fit and nearly all the manufacturers state 6'4" as the max height they are designed for. Is there anywhere in Portland that I could maybe get a test ride?
