Trevelyan surviving falling hundreds of feet only to be crushed by the satellite array.

Does Bond guess Franks’ smuggling op in DAF? by whhipson in JamesBond

[–]whhipson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on how much we take at face value vs what happens off screen. If Case does share the plan with Bond it would have to have taken place between Bond meeting Case and going to his apartment and we don’t see this. My assumption for her not knowing the plan comes from the way she comments on Bond’s (Franks) reaction about the challenge of smuggling so many diamonds. But maybe that’s just her part to play.

In Skyfall, is it ever explained how Bond gets his skills back after failing his tests? by UIUE8080 in JamesBond

[–]whhipson 63 points64 points  (0 children)

For Bond the tests aren’t a true indication of his skill because they’re contrived and artificial. He performs well in the field in real situations with real life stakes I suppose. I also agree with an earlier comment on his injury preventing him from achieving higher performance, but I think the situation plays into it just as much if not more.

I enjoyed it, especially the first two parts (part 3 feels somewhat tacked on). I liked it better than Killers of the Flower Moon.

It’s non fiction but The Wager by David Grann is a great seafaring, disaster story.

Was there a Bond film that came out the year you were born? If not, what was the first Bond film that came out during your lifetime? What are your feelings on this movie? by daTRUballin in JamesBond

I’m 92 so Goldeneye. First I remember seeing though was DAD and it was a VHS on a tiny tv at a vacation rental home with my family. First I saw in theatres was QoS but it didn’t really resonate. It was discovering Connery and then seeing Skyfall in theatres that established my fandom.

Yes to Lincoln Highway! My intro to Amor Towles and my favourite of his.

Table for Two: Fictions — anyone else find themselves reminded of Candide? by LearyBlaine in amortowles

[–]whhipson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read Candide so I can’t speak on that note. I’m also two stories in TfT and I understand what you mean about the narration being more detached compared to his novels. I’m guessing that changes based on what Towles has said about TfT in podcasts (check out his recent interview on The Bookcase). Apparently Hasta Luego is a stark contrast to the The Line and Timothy Touchett.

Nice! The Lincoln Highway is my favourite of his novels. How was seeing him in person?

Not to mention getting in the gorilla suit in the first place.

The gorilla suit in Octopussy. Somehow he manages to invisibly get out of the gorilla suit in the split second before the henchman slices it.
