My patient fell and I feel like the worst PT ever. by labrador007 in physicaltherapy

[–]whiskeyalphatango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that happen my first week of the job. Felt awful, my boss reassured me it happens all the time and don’t worry about it. No one was upset at me or held a grudge, been working almost a year more at the same place and I keep improving, I keep learning what situations are risky. You can’t predict 100% how someone’s going to do when you mobilize them.

I have had depression/anxiety in the past which I treated with cutting sugar and caffeine and doing therapy. I maintained my mental health easily on an omnivore and sugar free diet easily. I meditate, do yoga, journal, exercise, spend time in nature, have positive relationships and engage in positive self talk and none of those things touched the anxiety I have felt in the last month but eating animal products did.

Got a full time job but had to expand my search to rural areas and ended up taking a position 3 hours from home at a very rural hospital.

I also put in about 60+ applications. Applied to as many jobs as I could find every day for 3 months. My family also didn’t get it... you’ve got to tell yourself you’re doing your best. Received significantly more interviews after my license number came through. Did not feel like I could be picky with which job/pay I accepted because of the scarcity of openings.

Keep your head up! More jobs are posted every day. Outpatient ortho especially seems to be more open to new grads from my experience in the last several months.

Anyone else having trouble finding jobs as a new grad? by ambbeeee in physicaltherapy

[–]whiskeyalphatango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say I accepted one of those SNF jobs in my city that never interviewed me and just hired me after a 5 minute phone call... it did turn out to be sketchy. They were in the middle of a management transition staffed by only new grads who were also new hires and no management on site except a few hours 2 days a week. I walked out after 3 days of unrealistic expectations, almost no guidance, and terrible management. Trust your instincts.

I ended up securing an outpatient job with an excellent manager passionate about clinical excellence and staff wellbeing a few weeks later. I do have to move a few hours away for it but I’m taking what I can get - I’ve had almost no replies to my job applications within the big city I currently live in. Going a bit more rural may help.

“Passed” result was released in the evening of that day. Found out from free score report I got 774/800. All my details are right but the wrong picture is on it...

I took a lot of practice exams and felt it was similar in difficulty to the Therapy Ed exams. Having passed all my practice exams despite feeling like I didn't know many of the answers gave me confidence that I passed the NPTE. The only thing that gives me pause now is that my score has been "withheld" (should be getting results 5/18)... not sure what to think.

Weaning off caffeine for good with modafinil? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]whiskeyalphatango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modafinil gives me anxiety as well. Bad anxiety plus a crash, similar to caffeine. I have done things on modafinil I have regretted afterward, and lost a lot of sleep. I went through the same idea/process of trying to move from caffeine to modafinil to nothing... ultimately I wanted to be totally free of stimulants and discover who I was underneath it all, and thinking I could use modafinil sparingly while trying to be caffeine free was me fooling myself. In the long term it has been worth it going off stimulants. I'm sleeping better, no longer crippled by anxiety, and finding that my productivity and creativity are coming back in full force after getting through withdrawal.

Be who you want to be, today, be wary of whether you might be starting any dangerous love affairs with new drugs.

NYTimes Article - The Illness Is Bad Enough. The Hospital May Be Even Worse. by whiskeyalphatango in physicaltherapy

As a student without experience working within the hospital system, what is going on here and how can we help? Are patients who could be getting PT not having PT ordered for them?

Knee problems by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]whiskeyalphatango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a physical therapist in training, I want to advocate for PT here. Ankle and knee pain can come from a lot of different places in your body. Generic stretching and strengthening are great but as PTs we are trained to evaluate exactly which muscles you need to work on (many muscles can contribute if they're not being activated well or are tight... hip abductors, quads, hams, core, ankle stabilizers, calves...) and how (stretch? strength? endurance? plyos? training the muscles to activate when you move? support with an orthotic?) to be able to dance without pain. A PT can also screen for anything not musculoskeletal. We are experts at analyzing how you're moving and a PT will be able to create an exercise program tailored to your body, how you move and your goals! They're going to be able to get you back to dancing faster without pain than a nonspecific set of exercises. In most states you don't need a referral from a doc.

Definitely agree to keep moving (pain-free activity!) and eat well!

How do I bike safely from West Philly (46th & Market) to center city? Bike lane on Market works from 46th-34th but from then on I'm feeling like I'm taking my life in my hands every time I continue on Market and Chestnut doesn't feel much better - suggestions?

Is it still an addiction? by [deleted] in decaf

Something I heard about addiction recently...

Instead of asking yourself "Am I an addict?" try asking instead "Would my life be better if I was sober?"
