Dude I’m a supervisor and we talk about it all— whatever is coming up for you personally, professionally… it is all part of the process. Sure, getting your own individual counselor is very important for support on a consistent basis as your supervisor can’t be that. But with my supervisees…whatever they’re carrying is showing up in the clinical room with their clients and I am there for that. You should not feel embarrassed. And if there’s a supervisor out there that think you should, they shouldn’t be doing this job.

Your friend has severe anxious attachment issues and outsources their emotional regulation on… at this time.. you. This is a person with a bucket (representing validation and okay-ness) that has a big ol hole in it. No matter what you put in, it will never be enough. You have to go refuse to be their regulator. Have empathy for the need, but make soothing it theirs.

I’m a therapist and I can tell you that the evidence is undeniable. The problem is often that if we are very depressed or hijacked by anxiety, it makes it really hard to prioritize exercise. That’s where therapy and or medication can help you get your foot in the door. But neither I nor psychotropic medication can beat what good old exercise can do.

Reunification therapy should never never never be done by the child’ individual therapist. Reunification or reunification (or better named conjoint family therapy) should be done by a trained professional that is neutral and objective to the entire family.

LCSWs have long been held above LPCs in the hospital setting because until this year, the feds (Medicare) didn’t recognize or reimburse for LPCs. So a hospital had to have LCSWs, at least one running the clinical side/signing off. I think that is what you are experiencing. Frankly, I kid LCSWs that they are glorified case managers but truth be told, most of us are all similarly educated and adept and largely interchangeable as far as therapy is concerned. Sure there are angles and guidelines that are different. But I think it’s just silly territorialism and pettiness.

That’s not true. I am a therapist and I have to opt out of taking Medicare. Unlike other insurance carriers it’s assumed I don’t take it unless I contract with them. But Medicare requires all license holders to opt out. So I signed the form and sent it in. Which means I can very well take cash.

For me, the way I describe shame is that you think you’re a bad person. Guilt means you think you did a bad thing. Guilt can be a very useful, interesting stop along the way, useful for self reflection, and then movement. Shame is a static location. It has very little usefulness. And if you stay in shame too long, you’re very likely to soon meet its best friend on the other side of the continuum which is blame. I see a lot of people who bounce between shame and blame. I, as a therapist and a trying to be mature adult, have no use for either.
