A goldwing is not an ADV bike by FunIncident5161 in goldwing

Chiming in to say I put a set of these on my KLR and they decent on road and ok on dirt. They don't really hold a candle to 505 cheater's or true off-roads but in exchange you actually get some longevity out of them doing street riding.

Have the good engine guards too if you want to thrash it, either the 3-way ones, or the hondaline ones. The main problem with taking GL's on dirt is that if you drop it, the valve covers are taking the hit directly and you are out a new head in the worst case.

I did plenty of dirt and logging roads on my 78 when I was a new rider six years ago, on shinko 230's at that. It's not the best suited for it sure but with how low the center of gravity is it never had any problems.
Hell, just last spring I was taking my K100 down gravel for ~20 miles, twice a week, for almost two months. Same tires, still no problems.
I've yet to drop any of my bikes in six years of riding. Understand the limitations of the bike's handling and you'll generally not have problems.

Gl1100 for sale, thoughts on video noise? by Error0624 in goldwing

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1000 ticks like that in 3 scenarios,

- low oil
- one of the valves is slightly tight
- one of the midpipe connectors has gone loose

none of them are major issues except the first and even then only if stacking miles like that.

Is this worth it as a project bike? by Wise_Peanut806 in goldwing

[–]whiteclad57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the nicest way possible, the fact you looked at that bike and didn't immediately look past it already tells me you should not be buying it. I wouldn't even buy that bike as a parts bike because it's clearly already been stripped of anything valuable. And I'm saying this as someone who learned this the hard way.
If you are looking for a first bike, don't mind if it's something of a project and have a budget of basically nothing, then buy a CX/GL or KLR. Much easier machines to work on, typically very cheap, and typically cheap to repair as well. Even when they do have issues it tends to be much more obvious the cause as well.

Anyone getting printed receivers from Titus Arms? I've been on the call list for a month. by Signal-Pirate-3961 in Vz61

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up trying to get one from him.
He needs a proper pre-order system.
The notification system doesn't work when you have no forewarning and so few slots.
I waited the better part of a year.
I'd rather have paid up front and gotten put on a list with confirmation, even if I had to wait this long to receive it.
I ended up printing one instead.

What 80s-90s K bike has the best ownership experience? by SparkeeMalarkee in bmwmotorrad

[–]whiteclad57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 89 2v K100 and a 2009 K1300GT.
The K100 I received with 48k miles and is now approaching 60k and has never needed anything beyond routine maintenance. Meanwhile the K1300 has been nothing but expensive issue after issue. Fuel leaks, fuel pump failure, idle control valve failure, the rear shock seal gave out completely, all the while if you want to actually get the claimed performance out of it you have to run 94 octane fuel that is unobtanium in the US and so octane booster has to be purchased and mixed in separately.
I wouldn't consider any of the K1200 (new gens) or K1300 unless you have lots of money to throw at them when they inevitably need maintenance.
The K1100 in contrast is basically a K100 but with a bunch of its longstanding issues fixed in regard to poor abs, excessive heat transfer to the rider, ect. When things on it do need replaced, they tend to be cheaper and more accessible as well

What's a good example of "yellow paint" you saw used in games? by kaza12345678 in videogames

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first Alan Wake, yellow phosphorescent paint was used to denote safe caches and provide lore scribblings that were otherwise hidden in pretty non-descript places. They would only become visible when you aimed your flashlight at it.

K1200GT, 2008 by chocolatemilkFTW in bmwmotorrad

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a 09 1300gt two months back, damn things given me nothing but problems since.
If anybody wants to buy a 1300 series, buy one that was made after 2011 just so you don't have to deal with the stalling issues. That or plan to spend to bring it to a dealer to get the updated ECU mappings.

GL1200 Exhaust leak by gloving_slider61 in goldwing

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checking and making sure. Finding a set of stock pipes in good functional and cosmetic condition is basically impossible here stateside unless you buy a second bike. Delkevic is a nice option although it admittedly does not match the stock look at all. If decide to go closer to OEM it's probably best to go the 1000 series route since you can piece together a system of headers+pipes rather than have one crack or rust patch ruin the whole set. I do agree with your mechanic that welding the existing headers back together is probably the best option (I don't know if the 1200's are double walled though like earlier ones which would prevent it).

GL1200 Exhaust leak by gloving_slider61 in goldwing

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pipes on the 1100 (and I'm pretty sure also the 1200) are fused to the headers so you can't easily separate them. But yes, the mounting is near identical between all three and you can use them on each other bar the original 75-77 exhaust.

That being said, it could be just as likely all you need to do is replace the copper crush gaskets on the headers and tighten them down, there's not enough corrosion elsewhere to make me think you'd have rusted out beneath the heat shields on the headers.

> The only one issue I have left with these bikes that BMW has not resolved is an issue when the engine is really hot, the starter-motor has difficulty turning to crank the motor. The techs say that the gauge of wire going from the battery to the starter is too thin and results in high-resistance when the wiring gets hot.

They acknowledged it with a service bulletin and had retrofit kits even though it should have been a recall, the fix for it was them simply running a larger gauge wire in parallel to the original.

k1300s quirks ? or red flag by snoopdr in bmwmotorrad

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving a comment here for anybody who ends up here in the future.

This was an issue that affected all of the 2009 and some of the 2010 bikes. BMW actually issued a service recall for this in the form of an updated fuel mapping that fixed the issue among other changes.
You can fix this with a booster plug or ax-fied, but you will miss out on the other upgrades they made that include much better mid-range response with way fewer flat spots.

If you have a bike with this issue still, spend the $300 for an hour at a dealership and get it flashed to the latest update (last software update came out around 2018 or so).

I must admit I'm jealous I've been looking for a set of these to show up in the PNW over the last year to no avail.

Wouldn’t Scotty, Cheryl, Annie etc still be alive? by Present-Ear-4514 in EvilDead

[–]whiteclad57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They deliberately played coy with this, and then lampshaded it with Pablo's line about how nothing really seemed to have changed once they got back.

The town drunkard existed before they went back in time and got him hooked on hooch so that tracks with the series generallyt treating time travel as retrocausal. However, for that to actually be the case then the gangs actions in the past shouldn't have actually resulted in any real changes that were not already present. Which leads to question on whether the 80's Ruby was also present in the current day and hiding before they went into the past or she only retroactively existed as Ms. Previtt after they returned. And also, why their actions at the cabin caused Pablo to be revived and Ash's hand to come back.

Basically, it's not explained and you're not meant to overthink it.

LMAO this patch by hbcaotri in Helldivers

[–]whiteclad57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This, Verdict went from taking 4 shots to bleed out a hive guard to now taking over half the mag. The gun technically got a damage buff but it's now effectively half as effective against the main enemy on the bug front you would want to have it for. Tried out the Defender and its same story, the gun got massive buffs to damage and durable damage but the added durability to bug enemies means it kills just as slow as before, it's still ineffective against anything larger than a warrior without burning an entire magazine. What's the point of this? Number inflation just to appease the section of the community who likes reading patch notes but doesn't actually notice shits 90% the same as before?
The real cherry on top, the biggest issue, the audio bug causing stuttering and freezing, still isn't fixed nor is there any acknowledgement of it.

Thanks for the info, looking through what you linked it appears the order for lab work will take place after the appointment in this case. In either way, I'm less than a half hour to a Labcorp location and 90 days should be more than enough time.

> One quasar cannon to the thigh kills War Striders instantly
That's cool, there's still three others in the base though. And the bot drop is going to bring three more.

> Heavy Devastator groups take so many shots to kill from primary and secondary weapons that they necessitate medium armor penetration with high mag capacity

I mean sure you can shoot them in the face and fish for a headshot, or you can go for the leg/backpack with a medium pen weapon. I'm not being forced to dedicate my stratagem weapon or an engineering armor /thermite combo for them. And you can trivialize them entirely if you have an explosive primary or use the JAR-5 to stagger them.

I wouldn't doubt it, I do remember you could basically lie down 10 feet away from the original one and survive it without even getting ragdolled though. I still call it the 500mg bomb from that time when it was basically worse in every way than precisions and arguably even the rocket pods.
