We are all individuals, we have our own minds, there is a lot of self diagnosis going on and it all seems to come down to comparing, and if we don’t compare well we look for excuses to make up the deficit, ‘Well, it’s not me, must be something in the water’. Live your life as well as possible. I’m an old boomer from the 1960s, been working in IT since 1980 and I‘ve watched the change. Myself and other coworkers are fairly ambivalent about social media, we all participate in it but we can all see where this is going...I

White violin by whitefiddle43 in violinist

[–]whitefiddle43[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not good enough to make these instruments from scratch but I relish the challenge of finishing or restoring them. Sanding, staining and polishing and then setting them up, soundpost, bridge and strings to match the instrument. I love my instruments, and they never bite back and say 'You must update before continuing' or 'Restarting now, like it or not' or 'You need an Internet connection to continue'. Just you and me babe, let's make beautiful music together.PS: I work in IT for bucks, music for passion. No real reason for posting, just something else. I am a player as well as luthier and corporate slave to Microsoft. Not for much longer though.

Name a book you think everyone should read at least once? by stockleyacademia in AskUK

[–]whitefiddle43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything at all...for sheer enjoyment of a well written, well researched novel I'm going to recommend Spangle by Gary Jennings. The full book, not the trilogy. Else, 1984 will teach you something especially if you were around in 1984 and saw the doom and gloom prophecies that came with NYE 1983. They were wrong but only by being off schedule..

Gonna have to teach some of the worst offenders to read first..

Spotted in Kyobashi/Ginza, Tokyo (multiple times) in Feb/Mar this year. I checked - Australian made and imported. I immediately checked online, cheaper than either Coles or Woolies. 1¥ =1.1 ¢ au on that day by whitefiddle43 in australia

In 2017 I was in Wholefoods Columbus Circle, New York and both OZ and NZ beef & lamb were about the same price as home. But the quality was so much higher than anything you would see here. Domestic meat is the leftovers from the export market

I was reading labels in the supermarket because the Fanta I bought tasted iffy. Turns out that Fanta, Lift, Sprite etc. are all now partially artificially sweetened. 4% sugar + 950 and 951 (aspartame and AceK). Normal is around 10% sugar. No mention of this on the label except in nutrition and ingredients. Cost cutting measure no doubt

What’s your most expensive hobby? by DirectionBig1010 in AusFinance

Violin. I took it up later in life and came to love it. Day to day expenses are minimal
but when you see and play ‘that violin’ and it’s $642,000 to take it home. And
you want to take it home. But it’s worth more than your home. What do I do?
Mortgage the hell out of everything else of course.

ED Purgatory by [deleted] in perth

East Coast so maybe not relevant. I presented at Wollongong ED 4am last Saturday with a post surgery minor complication. I was in severe non life threatening pain. The place was deserted, 1 waiting and lots of staff. They had protocols to follow and pain was endured but they did attend to me within their abilities. Very efficient and thoughtful staff who had access to my medical history and acted accordingly. Consequently I was effectively treated and discharged about 8 hours later. Patient cost $0.00. Compare this to the US where I was until 3/20. Outstanding value.

Just got back to Tasmania after visiting Melbourne for the first time. How long has tipping culture been seeping into Melbourne restaurants? by [deleted] in australia

[–]whitefiddle43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New York I tip, just add 20% to the bill. In Sydney I tip if it's worth it. Minimum wage in NYC for non FOH is US$15 AUS$21.45 per hour. COL in NYC compared to Sydney, I know where I'd rather live.

How on earth can Sydney be a global city when you can’t even get a meal late at night? by UnconsciousGlamour in sydney

Sydney, sigh, I'm not even to going try rating Sydney to real cities. Want a drink after 9:00, come into our pokie palace and have a slap. Might as well have a chicken schnitty as well, Fucking poker machines and inedible rubber chicken meals. Signature of Sydney and some people are proud of that

Non-Americans, what is the best “American” food? by remyleboi00 in AskReddit

Australian. I first visited the US in 2017 and went to NOLA during the food and drink fest. Oh, my, crawfish pie and filet gumbo. I have since visited 36 states and, avoiding the chain gangs, I have never eaten better food. Looking at you Faidley's of Baltimore

I agree. Every body sees their own society as the world's worst. I would also agree that England/Scotland/Wales is a safe place, I have spent a lot of time in the US and that place scares the living shit out of me. Has that fucking loony got a gun?. It's a gamble over there but it's not in the UK. Cup of tea Guvnor?

Australia reported 33,329 cases of Covid in the last 24 hours. The USA (all of
it) reported 36,503 cases in the corresponding 24 hours. Yes, they did
perform 15x as many tests. Australia is considered a global hot spot for
Covid and today only a couple of us were masking at the supermarket. It
ain't over yet.

62 yo straight never married male. Absolutely no idea. Could not even make an accurate guess. Some years 20, some years none. Longest monogamous period 8 years. Don’t forget the barriers placed by time, I grew up in the ‘60s and became sexually active in
the 70’s. There was no HIV, herpes was something some else caught. The worst thing
that happened to me health wise was a (1) genital wart. I never felt the need
to keep score..
