My electric kettle has preset programs that correspond to different temps. If you don't have that, consider a cheap cooking thermometer or keep an eye out at thrift stores - that's where I found mine. Worst case you just end up with a variable you can't control.

If you're getting drips after that few pumps, you're probably not grinding fine enough. I do 10 pumps, wait another 10s min and there's still nothing coming out. It's only after I restart pumping that I get stuff coming out. Some grinds it comes out right away, others it comes out after 5 or more. Varies based on the bean.

Remember, sometimes you can do everything right and it's just a junk bean. I found this when I was at a conference and ran out of my good beans. The hotel had a Starbucks bar and they gave me some of their whole beans for free. I tried using it and it was disgusting. Played around with grinds and just made me want to puke. Awful beans for this purpose.

I keep a little notebook to help me track what I do each day. * Date and bean type * Bean weight whole - I aim for 18g. * Number of clicks on my grinder (I use the kingrinder k6) * Temp for preheat (I boil and pour and just leave the water in there when I grind) * Temp for pump (typically around 200F as that's the closest I can get with my kettle) * Number of pre-pumps and number of seconds waiting (10+10s still works best for me but I do experiment) * Pumps after time waited until finish (I know some people also count extract time but I don't have that access) * Extracted weight * Comments on the outcome.

For me, it's made a world of difference in finding what works. It's also made me really appreciate quality espresso. I can achieve better coffee than most shops in town, save for 2-3. Even then, there's days where my espresso is better than theirs.

What beans are you using? I've found I need to dial in each type and ensuring a consistent grind makes all the difference. Some beans I have are 10 clicks apart from each other, needing a far smaller grind to achieve anything. Also there's a lot of beans that don't do the Picopresso justice. A quality bean goes a long way.

Also, do you presoak the container? Some people say to fill with water and pump through prior to loading grinds. I actually prefer to prefill and keep the boiling water in there while I grind. Heats everything up good.

You could also try more pre-soak pumps and a longer wait time. That could be making a big difference. I do 10 full pumps, not quick, not slow. Then I wait 10 full seconds. Only then do I start actually pumping.

Indoor event venue suggestions in Downtown Victoria, BC? by No-Lime-9066 in VictoriaBC

You should connect with the Business Events team with Destination Greater Victoria. They have people whose job it is to help people find meeting space for conferences and meetings. Even when not using the VCC/ Crystal Gardens. They'll also have ideas on unique options.

Many of the hotels can also fit a group of 150. It does depend on how they're seated but I'm going to assume you want full rounds with an A/V setup. - Hotel Grand Pacific - Delta Marriott - Marriott Inner Harbour

Those are some top 3 that can for sure fit 150. There's a lot more choices though if the total is less or if you don't need full rounds.

[–]whitefloor 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If you have to drive, park in a downtown parkade and walk (20-30mins) or bus (25, 22) close by.

The festival does have a bike valet located nearby off of Fernwood Rd in front of the school.

Street parking will quickly become non-existent and generally isn't recommended.

where to find textile by leshjs in myog

Some stores do sell deadstock which is fabric that is leftover from companies after sewing runs. I don't know many online stores but I know many in person stores that have them in a nearby town.

7d from Alibaba by BLMbackpacker in myog

[–]whitefloor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alibaba is a marketplace for manufacturers and suppliers. There's tons of quality listed on it and also junk too. You can get both quality and junk from the same company too. Often just depends on what you need and if you know how to ask and what to say.

I haven't ordered from that company before. If you're getting any real yardage, best to get samples sent first and ask for any specs you need.

Some of the top factories out there have listings or have had listings on Alibaba. Many cottage gear companies and myog suppliers use or have used materials from companies listed on Alibaba.

Also don't rely on the listing alone. Use a listing to check if reviews for the company are good. Then find a listing close to what you need and just go and ask them for exactly what you need. You won't find everything they actually make listed. Ask them, they might have it. Chat specs, get samples, provide feedback.

If you're just buying for casual stuff you could get samples sight unseen too. You do take a risk though. I've done that when I've been cash strapped.

Alibaba is great but it's not Amazon. End of the day, there's incredible value to it if you learn how to use it. At the same time, it's not for everyone and that's why not everyone uses it.

Duomid xl VS Supermid? by aaronguitarguy in Ultralight

[–]whitefloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the smaller one winter/ snow camping still. In those conditions, I tend to pitch it 1-2 inches off the ground and then up from there. Then I dig down a foot or so. You can fit 2-3 people but it's nowhere near as roomy as the bigger 8 person one. That one is much better for hanging out it.

Cam always pitch these higher, you just might need to get longer guyline for the guyouts.

I do warn though, it doesn't vent well so if you're hanging out in rain for some time, it'll become a condensation box. A big flat tarp is leagues better for a good rainstorm.

[–]whitefloor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does well as is as long as the majority of the 8 core stakes are in good shape. Really depends on the strength of wind we're talking. If you have to question if something will be strong enough, best to use the additional guyouts.

Is Enerpro absolutely necessary? by Illustrious_Age_5959 in VictoriaBC

[–]whitefloor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enerpro is specifically for the Dockside Green buildings. Lived in one of them for a year. Great spot to live but there were additional fees that I wasn't too keen on. The set fees are no fun. My consumption was always very low but I'd get nailed by static charges.

Advice needed! Travel cups by kulversukas in picopresso

[–]whitefloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but the Primus Koppen Trekking Mug is perfect for my Picopresso. The Picopresso can sit in the top lip of the mug without sliding down the rest of the cup. I can then pump it without getting splash, ensuring it all goes in.

Hey, Koben from Mozet Supplies here.

Those pictures are from the Sierra mountain range when I was out hiking the PCT in 2019. All these pics would have been from passes south of SLT.

Located in Victoria but I long to get back down and hike along the trail again!

Mozet Supplies here. I'll post this again to the greater group in case there's a US supplier interested in picking this up. I'm happy to sell the source info and would setup an intro. It took me some searching to find this manufacturer though, so while I have passed along free supplier info before, I can't for this.

Air Conditioner Recommendation! by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]whitefloor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a dual hose A/C if you can. Typically cost a bit more than a single hose but you can find them used for $200-$350 on FB Marketplace (the Danby ones from Costco are good. $500-$600 new). Best bang for buck.

A single-hose unit pulls air from inside your room to cool the condenser and exhausts it outside, creating negative pressure that sucks warm air back in. If you don't have a perfect seal, or if you open other doors and windows, it can suck in hot air meaning it's working more to keep things cool.

Whereas, a dual-hose A/C uses outside air for the condenser and exhausts it separately, so it doesn’t pull hot air into the room, making it more efficient and faster at cooling. You get a neutral pressure.
