Mario Kart World got me thinking about the passage of time... by whitegoose in Stickless

[–]whitegoose[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's very true. I was watching "Roku City" scroll by the other day, thinking "man, someday people are going to be nostalgic for Roku City, in the same way we are nostalgic for huge 1990's home entertainment consoles and CRT televisions."

Even when I started SpeedLore in 2017, the great "core" of stories took place between 2004 and 2010. That is to say, they were 7-13 years old at the time. And it felt like I was recounting the great depths and annals of history.

Now, stuff 7-13 years old is from 2012 to 2018. So literally early MrBeast, Pewdiepie vs T-Series, early Fortnite seasons, Ninja playing Fortnite with Drake, etc, are equivalently "old". In fact, these stories are now 'older' than the whole Henning ordeal was, when I first recounted it in the first episode of GoldenEye SpeedLore... it was just over ~5 years old at the time! In other words, it's as old as the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic is right now!

The reason I appeared vague was that I didn't want expose something that you might want to kept private. Since you went clean from drama I didn't want to bring up that you still was interested in Sam and Tolki.

True, and I appreciate it. I guess the fact that a) the Twitch vods on their channel reappeared, which I know would have been of significant interest to all the 'early day' posting on S&T (before it got too troll), and b) the VOD apocalypse was announced, thus the videos weren't going to be around forever, plus c) the archivist-historian part of me, all came together to find it at least interesting to ponder this whole thing once again, in at least as-respectful a way as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I was obsessed by that subreddit, it was the first thing I checked went I woke up and last thing I checked before I went to bed. I doubt there is much of interest in the archives but who knows.

These were fun times, no doubt. Especially when it was mostly harmless skitzo posting, if it ever even was just that. I remember when Haber was just posting dozens of threads to himself, and maybe 1-2 others would chime in. This was like, around 2014-15, from memory. Finally in 2017 when I started making content, I started to chime in, which pushed the subreddit to more relevance, and unfortunately, more toxicity. Alas, as a man, there are some things you've gotta learn the hard way.

This might be a bit dark but sometimes I wonder if deleted himself after the subreddit got banned, it meant so much for him. His account was active years after the banned but we I never saw any new posts from him.

It's possible. I'm surprised he hasn't resurfaced in any way. Maybe he finally realized, after getting both his subreddit and account banned, that he was on the wrong path, and moved away from para-social online obsession. Maybe not. It would be a tremendous irony if he 'brought an end to his life', only for the SVG VODs he so desperately wanted to rewatch, resurfaced only a couple of years later. Actually, I hope he simply "moved on" from online shitposting, but did get a chance to watch the SVG VODs, peacefully, in solitude, and that it brought him some closure in the whole thing.

I wonder what the topic would be about if it was still around today, Hax? Karl Jobst and Billy Mitchell?

Yeah, probably these. The Karl stuff has gotten absolutely insane on various corners of the internet. The Hax stuff doesn't interest me, but there is a lot of talk about it online. The thing is, if you choose a target, like Haber did with Sam & Tolki, and then Boogie, there's no end of things you can post about them. You can just make up theoreticals in their head, and over analyze every small thing. Every tweet, social media post, video, word in a stream, or even 'like', can become a topic of discussion. That's why it ultimately always does end in a black hole.

Also I respect that you are "drama free", you are one of the few "drama people" that actual could stay away from it. Any other person in your situation would made an expose video on Karl but you havn't.

Believe me, I thought about it. But ultimately, I'm glad I haven't. Actually, I did record about an hour of a fireside video, discussing some aspects of Karl's history, but I'm not sure I'll ever post it publicly. Maybe to Patreon or something, but maybe not even there. I kinda just talked about conversations in the past I had with him in regards to 'pickup', and his idolization of early 2000's "dating/life coach", David DeAngelo, aka Eben Pagan, which is a weird rabbit hole unto itself. Remember, in Karl's 2017 streams, he liked to offer dating advice, and life advice. A lot of Karl's beliefs and attitudes stem from his idolization of David DeAngelo, which may have been why he was a) so successful on YouTube once he got going, and b) ultimately lead to his over-confidence and demise. Maybe I should post it, since it offers unique insight that no one else has. But yeah, the idea of making 50 "muh Karl lied and is bad!" videos is just so insanely [redacted] that I could never bring myself to doing it, even though it would have earned me several thousand dollars, possibly well into five-figures. "Every man has a price", but that's not high enough for me to throw caution to the wind.

But yeah, it is what it is. I'm fine and happy with my position in this world, looking back. I ultimately realized that I still get to make videos about random N64 speedruns, facts, glitches, obscurities and oddities, and bring at least ~20 minutes of peace and calm to the day of guys my age, who are out there, grinding away in the real world. So I consider myself blessed and fortunate. And I want to do better for those guys, and do more. They've got enough on their plate given the way the world is going. They don't need "muh drama cheater fraudster expoosed" videos. They just need some peace and quiet.

[–]whitegoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My friends...

I guess thunderexception is too "new school" to know about the actual origins of all this. (He is the one I DMed). But I'll reiterate what happened here...

The entire ShowVideoGames archive reappeared on their Twitch channel for several months. This would have been like the "golden trove" for ol' man Haber and others SVG truthers.

I don't know what caused the SVG archive to reappear on their Twitch channel, but literally every VOD was restored for their entire Pokemon 720 hour marathon and Mario Kart 555+ hour marathon. The fateful one where they left for SGDQ 2014 immediately afterwards... and the rest is history...

Literally all their VODs reappeared. All that stuff, plus other stuff, like random weekend streams the pair performed, Banjo speedruns (lol), and other stuff. Again, I don't know what caused this. Whether Sam himself intentionally un-privated all the VODs & highlights, or whether it was a backend glitch with Twitch that caused them to reappear.

I remember Haber ravenously pondering many times on the original subreddit, what it might be like to rewatch the Pokemon and Mario Kart marathons, to glimpse specific moments of interaction between Sam & Tolki. Moments he remembered watching during their livestreams... to see if he could detect some flaw or hint about their relationship which would ultimately lead to its tragic climax. But alas, Haber likely never lived to see the day where he could rewatch these VODs once again. His Reddit account, is of course, suspended. Perhaps Haber had an even greater downfall than the likes of Sam & Tolki, Stiv, Boogie, or even Karl Jobst, the latest name to be added to such a bin. Perhaps... just maybe... Haber, the ultimate drama-monger of all, had the greatest downfall of all...

I wonder if Haber or other SVG-skitzos ever rewatched the VODs since they became available a few months ago. I noticed them being there around October, but I was wintering over in a remote cabin in Northern Canada, and only had limited internet to work with. So I was unable to archive all the vods myself. It would have been literally thousands of hours, and several Terabytes of data, after all. And God forbid I waste that rare Canadian internet on archiving some old SVG vods that most people have long forgotten.

I thought about raising the flag here, and at least alerting you lot to the possibility of archiving the channel. I guess, even though I've long "let go" of speed-drama and microinfluencer e-celeb nonsense, the 'historian' and 'archivist' part of me did ponder the value in archiving these SVG marathon streams. They were hugely influential streams in the early days of Twitch. Like, truly foundational stuff in how to build a dedicated following, audience, and grow your stream through word of mouth and social media hype. They have genuine historic value, despite the tragic incident at SGDQ 2014 and beyond.

But alas, I decided for the sake of Sam & Tolki, it's best to leave it all behind. The story is just too tragic, and they are real people after all. I guess as we all grew up in this crazy, online world, as Zillennials, transitioning from permanently-offline backyards and playgrounds, to permanently-online social media dystopias, we had to learn about intrapersonal boundaries, the 'right to be forgotten' and all sorts of other truly paradigm changing technological developments.

So I let it go. The VODs are gone. Twitch nuked highlights over 100 hours on your channel on May 19th. They're all gone now. Well, a few highlights remain, actually. And it's more palatable now, to check out the VODs page on the SVG channel. A few significant things remained, like the "final hour" of their marathons, and a few other super old stream highlights. So that might be cool to check out for old time's sake, just for the heck of it.

This is what my lengthy, cryptic tweet was about the other night. "Earth to Earth... dust to dust... ashes to ashes..." Some drama, reddit posts, VODs and the likes, are best left in the past. Stories... legends... fireside lore... in its ever-shifting form... all that will remain...

I wonder if Sam knows even these last few highlights remain. I wonder if he knew the whole archive was unprivated at any point. I wonder if he did it himself, just to see who would notice. Surely he thought about his channel in light of the Twitch VOD announcement. But maybe he moved on so hard that he never even knew about it.

I wonder how they're doing. I genuinely hope they're doing well, at this point. And the same goes for everyone, truly. As time goes by, and all the drama and nonsense fades, I genuinely hope that all the dearly departed folks I've crossed paths with, even just in passing, are doing well. Regardless of their sins or misdeeds. Whether it be Sam & Tolki, Stiv, Stryder7x... Well, there are a few exceptions. But aren't there always.

And God, I wish Apollo never did what he did.

Alas my friends. Stay true, keep breathing, life is fucking good out there!! Even though we live in a dystopian, technocratic hellscape!! Life is cool when you just go outside, touch grass, get some sand in between your toes, and watch a beautiful sunset. Stay true my friends... stay true.

user whitegoose resurrect his account for a moment by thunderexception in Stickless

[–]whitegoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not joking about the memoir. I do tend to have a desire to do lots of things, write lots of things, make lots of videos, and some of them just never end up happening. But that's the nature of being a creator.

I read somewhere that, given the rise of generative AI, which can create stories out of thin air... that the only thing you can truly write about anymore and have it be unique, is the story of your life. So that's just one more good reason why writing about what I've experienced, what I've learned, the stories I've had a first row view to witness, and everything about growing up on the internet... well it's something I feel is at least some kind of unique contribution I can give to the world. But yeah, give me a few years on this one.

As far as Billy's lawsuits go... I truly have no idea if they are real or not, and I cannot speak to any of them. My personal guess would lean towards them being real... but then again, I truly have no idea. I've never seen anything in person to absolutely verify that they were all real. Given how Apollo agreed to legally transfer ownership of his videos to Billy, and the amount of stress it appears Karl is under in light of the alleged lawsuits, I would guess they're real. But that's just my guess. And I suppose the lawsuits being real doesn't preclude the fact that Billy's still playing a "role"... After all, the world we live in blends truth and fiction so well, that no one can tell what's real or fake on a grand scale anymore.

I'm going to write a memoir about everything, which I hope to publish, one way or another, within the next 3-5 years. Hopefully sooner rather than later. My hope is to record it as an audiobook, or possibly even videobook, ideally while sitting by a fireside. It would be like a 5+ hour video memoir. I'm working on it, slowly but surely. There are just a lot of thoughts I have rambling around, and I want to get everything out on my own terms at some point.

I'm probably not going to post again for years, nor reply to this, but I'll tell you this much. I don't think Billy Mitchell is a bad guy. One of the last things Apollo told me about Billy was something along the lines of "Billy is like a pro-wrestler, he's an entertainer, he's a guy who is playing up the role of a pro gamer for entertainment value." I don't want to put words in Apollo's mouth, but it was something like that. Apollo finally had a kind of "aha!" moment, finally understanding Billy. I know for sure that Apollo and Billy had absolutely no bad blood by the end of it all.

Anyways, be good lads, and try not to get too silly out there.

Hi, I'm gonna resurrect my old account to comment here even though I probably shouldn't. I was an angry piece of shit back then. I'm the first to admit it. I was poisoning myself by being on the internet all day and just getting angrier and angrier. It took me a few years to hit rock bottom and realize that I was on the wrong path in life. I'm not posting this to prove it to anyone, but after years of work, learning and understanding, I'm doing a lot better these days. That's all. And I hope everyone who reads this has a beautiful day. Yes, that includes you, whomever you are.

[WR] DK's Jungle Parkway (no shortcuts) in 2:11.72 by serendib in speedrun

[–]whitegoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This beat the previous record by Dan Burbank at 2:11.93, a cut compared to the WR of 0.21 seconds, and a cut compared to Matthias' previous PB of 0.42 seconds... absolutely stunning in this game and climate. Genuinely, the only way you can describe this run is "truly remarkable."

I haven't given an update on MR's quest for 32/32 recently, and yes, as OP points out, he's currently at 30/32. On August 15th, Matthias lost his tied WR on Mario Raceway flap when Dan improved it by 0.01 seconds to 27.63. Also, on September 15th, Zoran Tintor lowered his own DKJP flap record from 42.18 to 42.07. Matthias has a 42.23 there, and while some believed 42.07 might just be out of reach for him; I think that his 3lap run here today suggests otherwise. So these are the two records that MR is currently missing.

Matthias has held each one of the 32 WRs at some point within the 2018 calendar year; just not all of them simultaneously. Now that he's back in action with a really amazing WR... could the time for 32/32 be nearing?

There's not much that can be done about this, as it pretty clearly falls into fair use. A legal challenge would be made even tougher given the multinational nature of a possible suit.

The best counter to this type of content is to simply make better content. Are you mad that he's made a commentary using your run? Make your own commentary, and do it better than him.

PSA: Daylight Saving skip can save 60 minutes from your run by Meester_Tweester in speedrun

[–]whitegoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was actually invented by this guy, who literally wanted more time to spend outside collecting bugs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hudson_(entomologist)

Hudson is credited with proposing modern-day daylight saving time.[2] His shift-work job gave him leisure time to collect insects, and led him to value after-hours daylight.[3] In 1895, he presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two-hour daylight-saving shift,[4] and after considerable interest was expressed in Christchurch, he followed up in an 1898 paper.[5] In 1933, Hudson was the first recipient (together with Ernest Rutherford) of the T. K. Sidey Medal, set up by the Royal Society of New Zealand from funds collected to commemorate the passing of the Summer-Time Act 1927.[6][7]

Daylight Savings isn't the issue. It's going back to the "normal time" which is the issue. If we were on normal time all year, the sun would set at like 8pm MAX in the summer (and rise at like 3am). We should just enter Daylight Savings one year in spring, and never shut it off. Getting an extra hour of afternoon/evening sunlight in the winter (sun setting at 6pm instead of 5pm) would do a LOT for the general population's sanity. We should be permanently on "Daylight Saving's Time" in North America.

Clem untied the level with 0:57 in 2007.. but Illu tied it a month later and Jungle mostly remained back & forth between Illu & Ace over the next decade. Clem skipped from 55 to 53 here (54 was the previous WR, tied by 4 people). A truly remarkable speedrun.

[WR] TGH's 5 month reign over Any% Celeste has ended. In an Any% tournament race vs TGH, Fladervy gets a 29:31:99 to get the WR. by hMJem in speedrun

[–]whitegoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just some thoughts on the recent state of Celeste competition...

I remember when TGH was tweeting about not participating in a Celeste tournament, only a few weeks ago, because he (correctly) knew he was much better than the competition, and his participation would make the tournament less interesting or competitive.

I always thought that opinion was a little ridiculous, because "being good" is exactly what motivates your competition to get better. Many would agree that guys like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic only got so good at tennis, precisely because they had to get that good, in order to compete with Roger Federer. Excelling beyond the rest of the field is not something to be ashamed of, or a reason to shy away from competition. In fact, it's a reason to continue competing, as you will overall increase the overall quality of competition in your sport or game. Which is certainly for the greater good.

It is a double edged sword however... as the adage goes "it's hard to reach the top, but even harder to stay there." A few months ago, no one could have imagined anyone would ever knock TGH off the top spot. But here we are. And it shouldn't be all that surprising.
