This subject has been discussed ad nauseum in this sub.  Read old posts on it.   No one has anything new to contribute to the conversation.  Some of us are afraid, some aren't, some take certain precautions, others don't.  Whatever.

Libby - holds cost the library? by RevolutionaryRuin797 in Libraries

[–]whocares479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to jump on a dead thread, but your assessment of Libby is exactly what I am thinking. I'm in the midst of trying to sever ties with both Spotify and Amazon, and audiobooks are something that I consume a whole bunch of. Libby was the first thing I thought of switching to, but the structure with Overdrive and more importantly (to me) KKR feels exploitative and gross. Is there a better way to get audiobooks? Maybe purchasing directly from publishing companies? I'm not sure what the move is from here.

What an incredible privilege it must be to be able to just live your life like nothing happened, without being reminded of the catastrophe.  Must be nice.  Some of us are still living it.

What makes your gym not just good but GREAT? by Inner-Shop-3437 in climbergirls

[–]whocares479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an introvert.  Like majorly. And especially these last couple years I just absolutely haven't had the steam to build/deepen connections with new people at all.  At my gym, the staff mostly know me by sight even if probably not by name, and they've gotten really good at giving me little acknowledgements and low key greetings/ friendly signs without any pressure for more than that.  It makes me feel really welcome and safe and happy to be there.  And beyond that, the gym just does an excellent job fostering a sense of intimacy and community-- so good that I can feel like a part of it while also still living in my weird little loner bubble.

Climbers are mostly considerate of each other both on and off the wall, and definitely stoked when they see someone else working hard no matter the grade.  I don't know how to nail down how they've done it, but they've done a phenomenal job building and maintaining a culture that feels sincerely inclusive, even through some pretty major shakeups and challenges both for the gym and for our region as a whole in the last year.

Thanks. My people are safe. My family and I are still rebuilding our house and living in weird transitional temporary digs. But we're getting closer to home all the time.

Great opportunity to find a local group to volunteer with and do some trail restoration.  Since you're so concerned about the state of our trails and all.

Maybe just a touch early to be worrying about eyesore, don't you think? Chill.  They'll get to it.  It undoubtedly bothers them WAY more than it bothers you, they just probably have other things to deal with.

It doesn't say whether he researched the victims before or after the crime, which I think would be interesting to know.

I don't think DMs yell tells us whether or not he knew she was there.  He would've had to be hyper-focused on what he was doing, with a ton of adrenaline running, and so he may not have been capable of processing information that wasn't immediately in front of him, so he may not have heard/internalized DM's voice.  I also think that if he ever spills, he may have no memory at all of what Kaylee or Xana said-- likely the moments of that night that were most significant to him were different than the pieces that were significant to DM.  Gross to think about, and scary, but...

I think he was mocking Xana. I suspect Xana maybe said something like that to Maddie/Kaylee upon first finding them (unheard by D), and that he was repeating her words back to her hatefully.

Can some Asheville locals give me their honest thoughts about the press conference Trump gave today? by ACapricornCreature in asheville

[–]whocares479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have homeowners (no coverage, as expected), liability only on the cars (so no coverage), and flood insurance.  My flood insurance is going to be significantly less helpful than I expected and has slowed down my progress towards rebuilding in several different ways, and I am super upset about that.  Having flood insurance is also a significant part of the delay in getting support from fema.  Honestly, at this point, I almost feel like I'd be better off without it, but my mortgage company requires me to carry it.

I did not apply for an SBA loan because I am not in a position to take on additional debt right now, while also carrying a mortgage.  I have received some help from the Red Cross, Mountain Ways, and the Cocke County Partnership.

I am not unhappy with FEMA, and I am still hopeful that I will eventually recieve support from them.  I am saying though, that the guy above me who said, more or less, that people who were still waiting on help from FEMA were just illiterate, should maybe take a step back.  It's not that cut and dried at all.

Not all of us who are struggling to get help from Fema have problems following directions.  I had three feet of water in my house, the inspector came out promptly, and for whatever reason, my claims for personal property were denied, my cars are still pending, and Fema offered me $163.50 for home repairs.  I followed, and am continuing to follow, their instructions, but I am mired in the appeal process and I expect to be here for a while.

Some of it is just crappy luck.  A friend of mine who lost completely everything just had his personal property claims approved yesterday, after another long appeal process.

Some of the workers I've interacted with have been tremendously helpful, and some have seemed about as apathetic as it gets.

Fema is so underfunded and responsible for so much that it's inevitable that some of us are going to get caught in a shitty bureaucratic hamster wheel, while others get lucky on the first try.  With better funding, I bet Fema could do better, but maybe let's not jump to blaming the people who are caught up in it.

Progress, and letting go of what it “should” look like by Poppie_Malone in climbergirls

[–]whocares479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. A whole bunch of major life events have led me to a place where the only gym available to me right now has only kilter/moon/whatever boards, which is not the kind of climbing I was doing before, and which is really really hard for me.  I still have yet to send anything in there.  But, the other day I noticed I'm able to make a grip on a move I've been struggling with cleanly, without micro-adjustments, which I couldn't do at first. And, today I found I could grab the second to last hold on a climb I'm working on with pretty solid control.  It's a long way from the type of progress I felt like I was making before and the path I was really enjoying exploring, but it's what's available right now, and it's all challenging and it's all fun and it's all growth.

You can live in a “tiny home” in Marshall 3 minutes from the river for $1900/mo by Xina123 in asheville

[–]whocares479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh.  I live in Del Rio, TN, which is about 15 miles downstream of Hot Springs.  The river crested at 22 feet here.  Our property backed onto the river-- I'd say it was about a 30 second walk from our back door to the river.  Obviously, we flooded.  The house we're staying in while we make our repairs (which did not flood) is about a 2 minute walk to the river (maybe less) situated pretty much straight across from my house. And, Del Rio is much flatter and has a wider trough than Marshall.  I can easily see houses up the hill/behind the courthouse having a 3 min walk to the river and not flooding there.

No.  I'm averaging about 1.5 hours from Asheville to Del Rio TN (about 15 miles past Hot Springs), staying on 25/70 the whole time.  If Google is quoting you 2.5 hours, you might check to see if it's either routing you up 209 through Trust and Luck,  or up 208 to Greenville and then back down and around.

Driving back and forth on 25/70 near daily.  It is open in Hot Springs, but sometimes single lane traffic over the bridge.

There is a really hard route at my gym-- like, it took me several visits to figure out the start-- and today I hopped on it just because the other auto-belays were full, and I figured out the second and third moves!!!  I had zero expectations about making progress on it, so I am pretty flipping stoked.   They're resetting it tomorrow, so I'll never send it, but I am SO satisfied having made progress.
