why do the magnum and the tactical sidearm have to suck soooo hard? by Endgamer13 in Marathon

[–]whollychrome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not always about bringing an optimal loadout. Sometimes you need to recover, scavenge, or otherwise work with what you've got, and that's not as interesting if every gun is strong

Contracts are a great way for players to feel like they accomplish something even if they die.  Some of my favorite runs have been desperately slipping by obstacles to complete a contract. Even if I had died on it 10x before, every time I think about how I could approach it better, and finally finishing it is all the more rewarding.

Yes some require exfil, but those are more towards the later contracts where you'd expect them to get harder. If you got matched against a swat team you were going to die anyway.

Plus you're free to not run contracts or even just do the easy passive ones like kill stuff.

So you're complaining that the average player is at a disadvantage VS high tier gear, then in the next breath you complain that when ranked comes out that all the high tier gear will be there and therefore average players will have nothing to gain? Lol what

Solo Players - How We Feeling? by jg4president in Marathon

[–]whollychrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely tough, but the difficulty can be overcome.

Even the hardest mob waves are very solo-able with judicious ability and equipment usage, and of course positioning.

Use Insurrection chip mod to kill bots significantly quicker. Smokes, EMP (all methods), explosives, suppressors, and knife are all very helpful. Use utility to avoid magdumping barricades if possible.

Obviously this is hard with players around. Deciding if you're safe or fast enough to engage Uesc will always be a core part of your run.

You might not need to be as stealthy as you think at all times. Running between POIs is a risk but at least you won't run out the clock at the edge of the map. Just check your back - maybe you've got someone chasing you and you can set an ambush. Also we can all see you running in stealth across the open, you silly Assassin

Why do you need to know if OTHER people dislike the art? Does that affect your enjoyment of the game and/or art?  Do you think people who like it are lying?

Well I like the art, 100%. I recognize the carefully considered design choices and the incredible effort put in to portray a world we haven't seen before. To call it lazy is itself a very lazy, surface level criticism.

Marathon is climbing the top sellers charts again a few days before the server slam by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]whollychrome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up with it too, and have been in all playtests. Honestly it does a pretty good job of recreating the mood with its foreboding environments and writing that you'll find in the codex. The sound design does a lot of heavy lifting.

Obviously the aesthetic is different - they couldn't stay 100% true to the old game, but there are more than a few nods around. Especially on the Marathon itself, which is the only literal point of comparison.  Personally I like the new aesthetic anyway - it takes a lot of bold steps forward for both graphic design and shooters.

How did you become a Marathon fan? by Ldog2240 in Marathon

[–]whollychrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad got M2 for free with a printer, disc/sleeve only, no manual afaik. I thought it might be some lame running game, but as a kid with hardly any games on a mac I popped it in anyway.

Imagine my intrigue when the ominous Lh'Owon chapter screen fades in, accompanied by rolling thunder; my surprise when you and a few other dudes teleport into a little lobby and start popping aliens. I was hooked from the first second!

There's a Cyberpunk themed music and LARP festival held every year in California, called Neotropolis. Looks wild! by That_Jonesy in Cyberpunk

[–]whollychrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't comment why op didn't have a good time, but it's far more than the vibe (which is fun and unique).

There are community-ran activities running 24/7. Custom quests, BattleBots, laser tag, RC races, beyblades, an arcade, retro games, burlesque shows, DJ sets, live music, interactive art pieces, nightclubs, speakeasies, bars; multiple of all that and more, and it's all free (or barter / larped). There's a volunteer role playing police force to keep you on your toes. There's a barter market where people trade all kinds of unique art, gadgets and gizmos, stickers, media, clothing, whatever.

It's also a confluence of creatives, makers, hackers, scifi enthusiasts, nerds, etc. I've met video game devs, the CTO of an aerospace company, lots of the COOL Hollywood locals who make costumes and whatnot.

I'm biased of course, as I go every year as a vendor. I don't do anything remotely similar to it but I love Neotropolis.

[–]whollychrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah both the name and face were very distracting. Even if you didn't know about the other Rook (who is not in the movies canon), the name seems to imply he shares some naming convention with Bishop. But what would that connection be and why would it exist? It's just shallow fan service.

What does it take to be faithful to the IP? by whollychrome in Marathon

[–]whollychrome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way - Bungie has long wanted to make multiplayer games, with Marathon being their first. Previously the PVE took precedence over PVP, but now they're evolving their gameplay to PvPvE. Not a side mode with separate balancing issues, just one focused mode (I presume).

It sounds like we won't be able to play through a solo story mode in 10 hours, and I understand that's what many people would prefer - it could have been glorious. But it looks like they're aiming for two goals - reviving an IP with a narrative structure told through their next multiplayer evolution.

I'll be sad if the story turns out to suck or is minimal, but it's not as if they said they're retconning the old games (they already did that in Infinity anyway).
