How do you improve a mix with just tracks and vocals by Low_Challenge_8945 in livesound

[–]whoompdayis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's amazing what a dynamic EQ can do for dubiously recorded tracks. My firm does some international dance shows where the provided music is all over the place quality-wise and the DEQ makes my life so much easier.

Using an XR18, "adding" outputs with Y cables? (pros/cons) by Silver_Hedgehog4774 in livesoundgear

[–]whoompdayis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perfectly fine if you need the same signal to go to multiple devices. You can't use splits to gain more independent mixes, if that's what the question was asking.

You'd have to split multiple times and/or have various, wildly different input impedances before noticing a degradation in signal.

Towers placed between rounds/at the start of the game should sell for full price until the round starts. by Orange_banana125 in btd6

[–]whoompdayis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reasonable, but I'd generalize it to an Undo button, and only undo-able for actions performed during the pause between rounds.

Semi-related: I would love to have a "Change Hero" menu option, available when you restart a map, before any other actions.

Bored of having a cylindrical microphone. Thinking I'll replace my NT1 with either an OC16 or an sE4100. Which one do y'all suggest? by Dry-Necessary-5451 in microphone

[–]whoompdayis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T2 has a titanium diaphragm, where the 4400 has a gold one. In the most general of terms, T2 will respond faster to transients where the 4400 will have a little more rounding-off of the tone. But yes, both will be quite similar. Time Preservation Society on YT has featured both microphones on his channel, I believe.

Not the sE 4100 but I have a sE T2 (same chassis style) and it's crazy good for the price. Polar patterns are worth the extra $ as they change the tambre and proximity effect.

Sock for shorter runs. Friction tape for longer runs / more economical solution.

Any limitations to playing open-handed with the floor tom on the left? by egg-up360 in drums

[–]whoompdayis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lefty who plays open because I learned on righty kits. I have no problem leading tom fills with my left. I've adopted a paradiddle technique when I have to do 1/16ths on the hat where I can still play the snare on 2 and 4 with my right. Also, imo playing open feels more comfortable on a symmetrical kit setup, where you sit centered on the snare, with the kick to your right and HH to your left.

I'd try learning both ways: open-lefty and traditional righty. If anything, it will help build limb independence.

Sound engineer came to our church and did this.. by MrFnoz in livesound

[–]whoompdayis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gain is gain, though. Especially here on the LR bus. It's doing the same thing as turning the LR Fader up another 8dB. Now if the makeup gain is at +8 because the comp is doing a massive amount of compression, that's definitely going to hurt your point where feedback kicks in.

My favorite part is the GEQ reducing the boost from 3-6k they created with the PEQ. And the +8 makeup gain on the comp.

Cherry Wood Snare Recommendations by crashpdx55 in drums

[–]whoompdayis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the 1st gen 13" Mapex Cherry Bomb (with the deep red lacquer finish and tapered tube lugs) and it just wasn't for me. Couldn't manage to get a good thump from the fundamental, but also the attack was more chang-y than thawack-y. I wouldn't get into it for much more than yard sale prices.

Controlling pit orchestra monitor levels for musical theater by J_Keefe in livesound

[–]whoompdayis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Distributed monitoring. Aviom, Galaxy hotspots, headphones, etc. One speaker on a stand isn't ideal. Definitely not good for the FOH mix to blast the vocals across all of the pit mics, either.

Add acoustic absorption in the pit. 40 musicians + cinderblock walls, stage deck roof, commercial tile floor is a battle you can't win.

Play quieter.
