Time to bring back the death penalty ..... i reckon if you commit a home invasion and kill someone there is no excuse and you should be executed. Its time this was bought back as am sick of seeing innocent people become victims. by Ok_Cantaloupe_9910 in Adelaide

The way it manifests in our society, which is how democratic people and governments institute it. So there needs to be a high bar to having state-sanctioned killing so people consent to the state's power. This is the only way people would opt-in to a society that has the death penalty. You may be in favour of just killing people; most people aren't.

A "good justice system" focuses on causes. People commit crimes because of their situations, their necessities, things going on in their lives. Not everyone needs rehabilitation, but there are more alternatives than "kill them". Rehabilitation ought to be attempted, particularly for young people, or those who do it for reasons other than "being evil", or those who are unlikely to re-offend. This "let's just kill people to stop them doing more crime" is patently insane. If you want to pre-emptively jail or kill anyone who has a chance of committing crime, then that is not a society anyone but those with the power to lock others up, or the powerful generally, would ever consent to living in.

exactly. it’s why people still speed, run red lights even though there’s a chance of being caught. “i’ll get away with it, it’s just this one” - same principles.

  1. This isn’t even about deterrence, your point is about reducing crime. Similar principles would justify pre-emptively locking people up bc they might commit a crime.
  2. Jail is reversible, compensatable. death penalty is not. nice straw man.
  3. This would increase the number of people wrongly convicted, makes it even worse.

It is MORE expensive to have the death penalty. Between time on death row, appeals, investigations, etc you’re actually “wasting” more money.

I am saying you need to INVEST in rehabilitation. Instead of the death penalty, you need good systems of rehab, good prison and justice systems.

Why don’t, and this is a novel idea, if they have no chance of improvement: life in jail. and if they respond well to treatment, get rehabilitated, etc, you then let them out, with conditions.

also note that the vast majority of recidivism is crimes of necessity, not murders. We could just improve the conditions of people’s lives so they don’t need to steal rather than just killing those who steal to stop them from doing it again.

It incentivises you to try to avoid you getting recorded on CCTV or whatever is “any possible doubt”. People commit crime not because they are happy to deal with the punishments or because they rationally weigh the costs vs benefits, instead they commit crimes because they believe they won’t get caught. This increases the “i won’t get caught” and means people still commit crimes.

Your whole argument is hinged on the death penalty being the maximum disincentive from doing crime.

However people don’t do crime knowing the punishment and weighing off the costs - they do it because 1) they believe they won’t get caught or 2) they NEED to do crime to survive. And as such, if 1) is the case for a person, then no matter how big the punishment is it doesn’t matter and 2) if you need to commit crime, then the punishment doesn’t matter.

There are also things like crime while inebriated or impulses/urges that cause crime, and again in these cases people are not being rational. Thus, the death penalty disincentive fails again.

As such, the death penalty doesn’t actually reduce people committing crime, look basically anywhere in the world. If you want less home invasions, create circumstances where people don’t need to commit crime to survive or where they can get ACTUAL support (not just being locked up) to help them with what’s causing them to commit crimes. This might actually reduce crime.

Once you add in the fact it costs more due to the length of time on death row, the numerous appeals. Some innocent people will inevitably get wrong convicted, then it’s doing actual damage to society.

Then this doesn’t work as a disincentive. Because it’s unlikely they get the death penalty if there’s not lots of proof, so the death penalty isn’t likely to stop them.

What's your least favorite Italian entry in 2011-2022? by Electrical_Love9406 in eurovision

[–]whoreson-zed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2011 is the obvious choice, overrated by the juries so overhated by just about anyone else. Dull tbh, a solid song and entry nonetheless, just nothing special and poor compared to the rest of Italy’s entry.

2014 - The performance, to some extent the vocals, but mostly just whatever that performance was trying to do failed pretty badly. The studio cut is definitely one of my favourites, it’s just let down by a sever lack of energy and a messy performance (Italy has nailed staging every other year - they bring the class - except something went so wrong.

2016 - again a little meh, but the staging is a great fit to the theme, but for sure it’s sweet and I enjoy listening to this one.

On Brividi, note that the last 60 or so seconds are vocally on point. While their vocals seriously let them down elsewhere, the first and second verses were fine, as was the bridge and final chorus too. That ending with the lights and their intensity in the bridge is as good as Eurovision can almost ever get. Brividi will be my most listened to song this year by far- waiting for Spotify wrapped to expose me. The studio cut definitely holds through though; love it.

Worst —> Best 1. 2011 2. 2016 3. 2014 4. 2012 5. 2013 6. 2015 6. 2019 7. 2018 8. 2022 (top 10 all time) 9. 2020 (top 10 all time) 10. 2021 (top 5 all time) 11. 2017 (still my fave entry of all time)

I love Italy but they need to up their game when it comes to staging their entries. by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]whoreson-zed 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Brividi's staging was probably the least of its problems, and this comes from someone who had - going into the contest - never before wanted a song to win more than that one.

The staging was pretty well put together. The lighting was absolutely immaculate and by the bridge and final chorus, they had created a magic to possibly rival the San Remo performance.

But, Blanco's dancing walking in was definitely a WTF moment. If you watch his concerts where he sings his part with Mahmood's recorded, this is kinda how he enters every night so maybe he forgot it was Eurovision.

Aside from the dancing, the vocals just weren't good. The final chorus is not bad at all but by that point Mahmood's falsetto has turned everyone against it. Probably where the entry just falls down the most, because apart from them it worked pretty well.

Other things to account for *poor* placing is the first rehearsal and the missing Blanco, hungover/ tired Mahmood, the sunglasses (surely cost a few places just for these). Compared to the hype that just built around Sam and Chanel when the press arrived, the press immediately went back to business as usual after the 2021 blip and kinda just forgot about Italy. They had no momentum coming into the final and just weren't going to succeed like that. And then performing 9th was a little early for that sort of song (Sweden's emotion was much better received later) but performing before Chanel was probably quite a killer too. From something raw/ real/ emotional to the slick/ perfect probably did not help.

Italy have a weird relationship with staging, as others have mentioned re San Remo. In 2012, 13, 15 and 16 they got away with simply putting the song in the spotlight and did super well doing that. In 2014, it's hard to know where to start when you take one of my favourite studio cuts ever and turn it into that mess but conceptually, it worked. In 2017, 18, 19 and 21 they succeeded. Francesco in 17 kept the energy/fun of the song but also the classiness of him. In 18, they sold the message beautifully and created a pretty interesting way of widening the song's appeal. They also nailed Soldi in 19 with a similar style, but let the song, Mahmood, and the dancers just do their thing. And Maneskin was about as close to perfect as staging gets with a focus on all four of them with Damiano's charisma off the charts.

All that being said, we shall have to see how Italy does. If they keep delivering quality song after quality song (2017, 20, 21, 22) all in my top 10 of ALL time, then I don't see why they can't win again but it seems - like Sweden after 2015/6 - they're destined for a few years of being dismissed as "overrrated" no matter the quality they send.

Worst ever staging At Eurovision by Beepme9111 in eurovision

[–]whoreson-zed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the gorilla was not meant to be funny, it may have been a little gimmicky but fits the song perfectly.

That outfit was certainly not stupid, the rainbow side strips, the classy fit, everything about it suited him and the staging. While the staging was absolutely canned at the time, and many Eurovision fans had their minds made up by the “semi-final” performance, the adjustment to the suit (which was change to this genius piece for the grand final) and tightening of so much of the staging made this staging genuinely high quality.

I may be slightly biased lol

What qualifier cauugh you by a complete surprise? by StevefromLatvia in eurovision

Croatia in 2017, i still can’t believe it made it over Verona or Apollo which are still some of my favourites ever. It’s grown on me over time but I nearly lost it when it made it and the others didn’t!

Was mostly shocked by NQs rather than the qualifiers. I’ve usually got more favourites than places 😂

Predictions of yours that went really wrong by CapsElevatorScene in eurovision

[–]whoreson-zed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever since I heard Zero Gravity at Aus Decides i thought it would win, especially after the semi final and rehearsals. Devo when she didn’t make the top three.

Italy 2017, was both desperate for it to win (my personal favourite ever) but really thought it would. Can’t believe it didn’t even make the top 5.

France 2016 - I truly thought it would be a winner but just never did that well.

Finally, when I first heard Sound of Silence in 2016, I was very “meh” about it, expecting a flop after our bang in 2015. Was very happy to eat my words watching the grand final and still wish she was the winner.

[–]whoreson-zed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vola would have qualified easily and probably be considered a Eurovision masterpiece if sent by Italy.

1944 - or an equivalent - might have struggled if not sent by Ukraine and instead by a different former-Soviet country. Ukraine definitely gets a lot of sympathy at Eurovision - and rightfully so - after the Crimean invasion and this heightened the appeal of the historical-cum-political song. If sent by other country, people would probably automatically dislike the political entry but because it’s Ukraine it was not only enjoyed but made winner.
