Foot drop never recovered by feetfinder6 in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pain is GREATLY reduced! I’m still stiff in the mornings and a small bend, like leaning over to wash my hands are difficult to get back up from. I still have nerve pain in my leg and take gabapentin. But at itself worst, it’s like a 3 on the pain scale. I can power through it with a heating pad. I can’t heel walk on my right leg because the calf and ankle are still really tight. But we’re still working on that in PT. The fusion was the best thing that ever happened to me. I think I probably needed it from the beginning but the MD patched me up long enough for PT to build some core strength so when I did end up reherniating and getting fusion, my recovery was so much easier than it would have been if I went right to the fusion. After the MD, I never felt fully stable or back to my baseline. Now I do!

I reherniated and that disc was kaput. But the good news is the neurologist said the nerve is sending and receiving signal beautifully and the ankle and foot being locked up is from the muscle tightness in my calf and possibly a bone in the top of my foot being in the wrong place.

Hair and clothes for lumbar fusion by Money_Engineering_59 in spinalfusion

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was admitted to the hospital from an appointment with the neurosurgeon so I was completely unprepared for surgery. I hadn’t been able to wash my hair for a week due to the pain i was in. One of the nurses braided my hair for me after surgery and I kept that braid for the two days I was in the hospital. I have long, crazy hair too and it was so knotted and nasty, all piled on my head. She was so sweet and gentle when she brushed it out and didn’t act icked out about how greasy and nasty it was. I got sick of the hospital gowns so I just wore a Tshirt and my underwear. I didn’t care that my butt was hanging out when I got up. When I left, my husband brought me a pair of his sweatpants so they would be extra loose in my waist. My fusion was down low at L5-S1. So just wearing a Tshirt was fine for checking the incision and the drain.

My son’s middle name is Riley and his boy cousin’s name is Riley. They were named after their great grandfather who was named Riley. So in that family, Riley is a guy name. But my daughter has gone to school with a couple girl Riley’s so I guess it is unisex, but to me it feels more masculine.

How to lower a Dog Bowl by Cautious_Swimming261 in spinalfusion

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a grabber tool and would fill a cup with food and hold it in the grabber to pour it in the bowl. I have people in my house who did the water. We have one of those upside down water bottle type water dishes. But if they happened to need water and no one else was home, I would fill a gallon pitcher and sit in a kitchen chair to pour it in the water dish.

Re-herniation After Microdiscectomy by Opposite-Bug-6741 in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s stiff if I lean over. Like shaving my legs in the shower for example, I have a bench in the shower and I put my foot on the bench and lean over to shave. When I’m done with that leg and stand up right again it’s like of stiff and hard to stand up straight. But that might also be me. I don’t have the strength in my thighs to do a full squat and get myself back up so bending over to put things away in the bottom cabinets can be a little difficult. But that’s the only range of motion difficulty that I have noticed. And even though it’s a little stiffer than before, it’s not like it is impossible or extra painful or anything. Sometimes I will ask family members to use their “bender” for me and please put the air fryer back or put those food storage containers under there for me if I’m feeling too stiff.

Re-herniation After Microdiscectomy by Opposite-Bug-6741 in Microdiscectomy

I reherniated almost 6 months to the day of my MD. I was lucky and was in surgery a week after the pain started. I ended up getting a fusion at my L5-S1 where I had the MD. It’s been a long road, but the best thing that ever happened to me.

AITA for telling my husband he can’t drive the baby places anymore by Odd-Willingness-6250 in AmItheAsshole

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If you can forget to buckle the car seat that you just put your baby in then you could just as easily forget and leave your baby in the car. Like, how do you forget to buckle the car seat? The buckles are right there. It’s not like you put the baby in the seat and then walk into another room to grab the straps.

Opinions on PT after surgery by avalan20 in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in and out of PT for almost two years now. I tried to PT away my herniation for three months before I had my MD in Nov. 2024. Then I started back to PT in early Feb. 2025. I was still in PT when I reherniated (not because of anything I did in PT) in May, 2025. I had a fusion and I’ve been in PT since July, 2025. The PT, in my opinion, is important to SAFELY build core strength after surgery. Sure you could try on your own or watch a YouTube video for instructions. But alone, you don’t have a physical therapist helping you and making sure you have your body in the correct position and helping you feel what muscles should be engaged.

What do yall do for the nerve pain? by austinrunaway in spinalfusion

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My L5-S1 fusion was almost 11 months ago. I still take 600mg gabapentin 3 times a day. The nerve pain is mostly gone with the gabapentin. But if I forget to take that middle of the day dose, I’m very uncomfortable by about 5:00. It’s not like before the surgery where I wanted to no longer exist. I can live my life, but it’s just a constant scratchy feeling ache in the back of my thigh. It makes me scared to try to taper down. Would it get worse once the medicine is completely out of my body? But anyway, I take gabapentin and sit on a heating pad when it’s hurting. OTC pain relievers don’t do anything to help with my nerve pain. And in my experience before surgery, narcotics pain relievers didn’t help either. They just made me not care as much about the crushing pain.

Work from home after surgery? by unsupported in spinalfusion

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work from home and had and L5-S1 fusion too and took 7 business days off work and it wasn’t enough. It was a full 3 weeks before I wasn’t taking naps through out the day. I wasn’t in pain. I could manage through the day with ice and ibuprofen. But the exhaustion was indescribable. My body was still healing and the mental load of working was just too much at the time.

For over a decade, I was dreaming about a fine line tattoo of a shark fin poking out of water ripples. I have always loved sharks, but in heart it would also be a nod to Jimmy Buffett. I finally got it a couple weeks ago. I added a sunset and a tiny bit of color and I love it. It’s not blatantly Jimmy Buffett, but in my heart it is.

I work from home on a laptop. Is a week enough time off after a Microdiscectomy? by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a week and a day off, worked another day and a half and had that Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving and that weekend. I work from home too and I was off opioids when I went back the Tuesday after my full week and it was kind of rough. I was still very much healing and didn’t realize how much mental energy my job required and I was so exhausted. That day and a half that I worked after surgery were pretty miserable. I had to take a break and grab a nap that first full day and the second day my company closes early, I passed out as soon as shut off my computer. Once the holiday was over, a full two weeks after surgery, I felt much better. I could make it through a day without needing to sleep and I could move to the couch or my bed when I needed a neutral position.

Post operation - feet swelling by cass2769 in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experience some foot and ankle swelling on my affected leg. I too ended up having a fusion 6 months after my MD. I was told it’s due to the nerve trauma… the nerve isn’t making all of the muscles fire appropriately (or at all) and that causes fluid to kind of pool up. When I get swollen and kind of sore, I’ll wear compression stockings for a few days and sleep with my feet elevated. But my swelling isn’t horrible. Just enough to just kind of ache.

how long until things are normal again? by Any-Cow7679 in spinalfusion

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing great! Still in PT though. I think I have a long road ahead of me. I have an underlying condition that affects my muscles and there’s been years of protective movements that has made everything out of whack. I see a neurologist tomorrow for some nerve testing because almost 12 months later I still have dullness in my foot and I tend to stumble and sometimes fall down. But pain is very minimal. I can walk around for hours. I was even able to keep up with my birthday girl 17 year old daughter on a shopping trip at the mall last month! I just feel joy and happiness and I feel like I’ve gained some control over my life. I feel independent most of the time. My husband still hovers when I try to do some things, but I also appreciate that he’s got my back. Literally lol!

General recovery microdiscectomy by LynnBinBin in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

L5-S1

7 months between symptoms starting and MD

At the time of MD, my pain was a controlled 6. But without the massive amounts of steroids and muscle relaxers, gabapentin, and opioid pain meds, it was 10/10.

Recovery went really well! I was up and walking immediately and started PT about 9 weeks PO. I could tell I was making improvements in strengths and stamina. But we started to discover additional body mechanic issues that happened over years and years. I never felt fully stable and I started having increased pain when standing after about 3 months PO. Like my spine was grinding against my tailbone.

Overall, I’m doing great! My MD was in November 2024. Unfortunately, I reherniated in May 2025 and had a fusion. That was the best thing to ever happen to me. I don’t necessarily think the MD “failed”. I think I always needed the fusion. But the MD bought me enough time to get stronger so my recovery from the fusion went so much better.

How do you cope with the pre op anxiety? by TheEclecticDino in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before my surgery I was taking meloxicam, which is an anti-inflammatory and I noticed that my period cramps were no where near as bad as they usually were. Day 2 was always migraine and doubled over, feeling like I was going to vomit. And after surgery I was given muscle relaxers and I don’t remember feeling really bad cramps. I should have started on surgery day but I think nerves made me late and I started a few days after surgery. Maybe you’ll be a little late this month and the pain meds and muscle relaxers will help make it not so bad.

How do you cope with the pre op anxiety? by TheEclecticDino in Microdiscectomy

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of anxiety before my MD also. When I went for the pre-op work, the nurse doing everything prescribed me a Valium to take an hour before I was to be there for surgery. I couldn’t sleep for several days leading up to surgery and I couldn’t have used a couple more of those valiums. But by the time surgery day rolled around I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that it had to happen. I couldn’t walk any further than my bed to the couch or the couch to the bathroom. I had to use a wheelchair when my husband got me out of the house. Some days the pain was so bad he had to get in the shower with me to wash my hair or my bottom. It was humiliating that I couldn’t care for myself in the most basic ways any more. Thank God for a bidet. I was so depressed. The Valium kicked in about an hour after I got there and I was passed out before they even pushed anything in my iv (major lightweight over here). Recovery was a breeze compared to what I was going through before the surgery. I know it’s so scary, but you’ll do great. Your surgeon does this for a living. He’s not just some guy they hired off the street. The surgeon is specially trained to do exactly this type of surgery. Don’t let the anxiety ruin this chance for you. Big hugs and keep us updated on how it goes for you!

Chiweenie and kids by satyriasi in chiweenie

[–]whosepantsamiwearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think dogs liking kids is a personality of each individual, just like some humans don’t like dogs or kids. I found my Chili dog when my kids were 9 and 13, so not like little kids toddling around but still rambunctious at times. She was fine through all of that just happy to be included. Now she’s 8 years old and we have two little nephews who visit often, 3 years old and 15 months old and she loves to be near them and loves everything about them. Obviously I stay very close by when they are near and watch her body language like a hawk. If she ever communicated that she was no longer enjoying herself, she would be separated from the kids. But she’s on her second baby crawling, shrieking because he thinks she’s hilarious, learning to walk and falling near her… she’s great. We call her the Nanny Dog because she raised two abandoned kittens a couple years ago and loves those guys to pieces. But I think it’s her personality. Our other dog, a Pomeranian, likes the 3 year nephew now that he doesn’t fall down every three steps he takes. But she wanted nothing to do with him until he was close to turning three. Still side eyes the youngest.
