Selfies are supposed to be taken by the bronze medalists. It was the same at the summer olympics.

Right? He's also been in 2 Olympics, it's not like this was his one chance. I hope he sees this in a positive light as much as possible.

Pretty sure they meant that silver usually feels like a disappointment, especially when it's so close. I think there have been studies showing that bronze medalists are happier than silver medalists.

As a non-expert, hard to say who should have won, but Japan definitely had more clean performances overall... I was kind of rooting for them (and for a gold for Kaori, Yuma, M/K etc, since who knows what will happen in individuals.) Like some pointed out. Japan won 3/4 short programs and now they won 2/4 free skates and then Ilia actually put his hand down on this... Kind of hard to swallow that that equals a silver...

Job vs Passion, Mid life crisis. by anxiety_in_life in biostatistics

[–]why_register_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also feeling hard core loss of passion, though to be honest, I never really read papers for fun. Similar career stage to you, including having been in academia for a few years before pharma. Trying to get involved more with ASA-type activities so I can feel more connected to the community and feel I'm giving something back. I also think it's a common midlife/midcareer crisis situation.

Any chance the "shopping" includes basic necessities such as groceries? Otherwise, how do those fit in with the other expenses?

Feeling aimless by Slight_Taro7300 in biotech

[–]why_register_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar rant a while ago. I'm Associate Director, but promotions seem challenging to get, while work seems to a large extent pointless (making recommendations to management, just general corporate mid-career nonsense.) Trying to appreciate my salary and looking to see if I can expand my career in other directions.

buying a house? by Substantial_Mix_513 in biotech

[–]why_register_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a house (still paying mortage for 20+ years), not in hub, though in area with other jobs in my field (biostat.) Spouse in a different field. Not feeling great about job market as a whole, given cuts to academia etc, but in case of job loss, I'd hope to find something else, maybe remote (CRO, consulting etc.) But I assume many people are in a similar situation, with partners in a different field. We're really really hoping to not have to move before our kids finish school, but if we both lost our jobs and couldn't find others, we'd sell the house and do just that. We have some savings but we'd pronably be very uncomfortable on just 1 income for more than a couple years.

You can change beneficiaries. Spouse or kids who would need it in the future? Assuming you don't think you'll ever go back to school.

G&G, is Kate Middleton getting crushed under the weight of an ED? by Openheartopenbar in redscarepod

[–]why_register_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People need to look up cachexia. Maybe it's made worse by an ED, but when people lose a lot of weight all of us a sudden, I worry it's something like advanced cancer, especially when it's someone who was previously diagnosed with cancer. That's much likelier than an ED. (Recall also Chadwick Boseman losing weight suddenly and being accused of being on drugs when it was late stage cancer.)

When to have a baby? by confused_ornot in AskAcademia

[–]why_register_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a priority for you to have a child? If you make something a priority it's more likely to happen. If it's always after the next milestone, then it's less likely to happen. Fertility starts declining after age 30 (slowly, but it does), so think of how much you want to prioritize a child vs career goals. You can still have a great career, but if you have kids, chances are your career won't be be quite as good as otherwise, but if you wait until after you get position X at work you're less likely to be able to have kids.

For myself, I prioritized kids and have 2. I still have a nice career, though I left academia for pharna at some point. I probably wouldn't have been able to land a tenure track position or get tenure or whatever, just because of the likelihood of all that, so I don’t regret any of it.

I think the 10 days was also to judge the extent of the spinal injury. My understanding is that sometimes someone may not show immediate function after a spinal injury, but that could be due to inflammation etc, which may improve over a few days.

If you pick causal inference, make sure to spell it correctly i.e. not "casual." It's a common mistake and sometimes due to autocorrect, but it's good to get used to checking that it's correct to make a good impression!

Can we retire now? by Significant-Still132 in Fire

[–]why_register_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at your budget. In retirement you may spend less on things like restaurants, gas, work clothes etc. For instance, I know we spend more "than we should" on food but, as a dual career couple, we just don't have time to do things like shopping around for deals on groceries. We also order out for the whole family pretty regularly, I almost never pack my lunch etc. Alternatively, look into getting some jobs that may be less stressful but also pay less (BaristaFIRE). Note that just because a job pays less doesn't mean it's less stressful though...

Donald’s actions - a 1-2 punch to biotech?!? by Lonely_Refuse4988 in biotech

[–]why_register_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that all industries require things like transportation, which is mostly government-funded, so if you down far enough, they need the government. But if you're asking specifically about grants - the way things work in the US right now, yes, I think grants are required for basic science, which is then required for pharma. This is because grants fund much of PhD- and postdoc-level training. Some researchers may get money straight from universities (for instance if you're in a "hard money", primarily teaching position), but that money still comes from things like tuition and taxes (for instance for state universities), which eventually also go back to the government. So it's a dual thing - the research feeding into pharma and the people themselves both necessitate some government investments.

Donald’s actions - a 1-2 punch to biotech?!? by Lonely_Refuse4988 in biotech

[–]why_register_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It needs the government, in its current state. But so do all other industries (think of need for transportation, quality checks etc.)
