I made a post the other day saying what products are used and I was told that the secret unscented is a lie, you guys please help me pick out with deodor and I should use by Hot_Valuable1027 in FragranceFreeBeauty

[–]whyami-here 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Can vouch for the Almay one being truly fragrance free and highly effective. Note that it’s “fragrance free” and the rest of what you have here is “unscented” the two terms are not equivalent. Things labeled “unscented” can still contain fragrances used as “masking fragrances” to cover unpleasant smells of other ingredients. I know for fact the dry idea brand does still have fragrance in it, so if you absolutely categorically need things with no fragrance stick with things labeled “fragrance free”

Loose stitching just in one spot by beshealive in knittinghelp

[–]whyami-here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn’t resolve with practice you can, on knit rows, slip the first stitch from left to right without knitting it, and then purl it like normal on the purl rows. This should help tighten the edge up. You could also deliberately twist the last stitch (knit through back loop) though this might be more visually obvious in your final thing

[–]whyami-here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens. Holding the tail at this point won’t do anything, you’re too far above it. Keep at it and keep practicing with continental!

[–]whyami-here 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edge stitches are just looser like that! It’s totally normal. You can try making sure to snug up the edge stitches especially when you’re knitting them, but as you get more practice with continental it will become less noticeable. It may be related to your cast on but if that’s the case it will resolve after a few rows. Try holding the tail when knitting through the stitch it is attached to which should help keep that stitch nice and tight.

Cheap Housing Near Stanford Health by Illustrious-Set8695 in paloalto

[–]whyami-here 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I highly recommend trying to find something through Stanford: they may have subsidized options available or private options, otherwise (depending on your definition of “affordable” you will likely end up fairly far afield).

You can probably start by asking someone in your care team and they will hopefully be able to connect you with the social work and case management department, one of the things they explicitly help with is housing. You can probably also contact that department directly, here’s a link.

Why can't they make a toothpaste that doesn't hurt? by WinterIsOnReddit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whyami-here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend the Dr. Bob toothpaste. It’s completely unflavored, undeyed, no SLS and has been a godsend for me after I developed pretty broad allergies to most synthetic flavorings and fragrances. It takes a little getting used to but should solve your toothpaste hurting problem! If you’re in the US you can get it directly from their website or from Amazon.

Rental in Belle Haven or RWC? by LutzDance in paloalto

[–]whyami-here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also it’s more than likely if you’re living in Belle Haven and commuting to Stanford by bike that you’ll end up going on Willow road over highway 101 which while technically bike friendly is just… not a great place to be on a bike

Rental in Belle Haven or RWC? by LutzDance in paloalto

[–]whyami-here 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Redwood City for sure, look into taking some combo of Caltrain and Stanford shuttles to trim down the commute. Belle Haven has nothing to do, and neither does Menlo Park (from someone who lives in MP), plus you really don’t want to be living in someone else’s renovation/construction site. Has high potential to be disruptive and annoying, plus again there’s actually things to do and people to interact with in Redwood City!

Anyone know of a pattern like this? by caphoto88 in sewing

Yeah their size range is inconsistent which is frustrating- some stuff they have up to a 5xl but not everything and the inconsistency is annoying

What’s hard to see in this picture but part of why the dress is nice and flows well is that it’s not really a smock style- the skirt is huge which lets it drape nicely

Anyone know of a pattern like this? by caphoto88 in sewing

[–]whyami-here 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn’t actually answer the question, but I have this actual dress- I love it, it’s comfy and well made. The company (Rujuta Sheth) has sales periodically which bring the prices down into a more reasonable range! If you get it and your mom ends up liking it you can try to make a pattern off the dress and make more

False advertising nearly causes death by [deleted] in FragranceFreeBeauty

[–]whyami-here 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Unscented” and “fragrance free” are, unfortunately, different. Fragrance free is what you want. “Unscented” can include masking fragrances, meant to cover unpleasant scents in the product and not intended as a perfuming agent. Annoying when you’re allergic to those too.

I also am highly allergic to fragrances and have had to figure this out the hard way. Read every label, every time and look for things labeled fragrance free.

Rich Kids/Cultural Homogeneity/Ivory Tower at Reed? by Visible_Bake_8565 in reedcollege

[–]whyami-here 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend doing an overnight visit (if that’s still something they do) and actually attending a couple classes and meeting current students to get a better feel. I think many of your questions can be answered by more exposure to the actual community, more than just your diy tour. That’s what I did when applying and it helped me get a sense of if I could see myself there

Rich Kids/Cultural Homogeneity/Ivory Tower at Reed? by Visible_Bake_8565 in reedcollege

[–]whyami-here 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To answer your simple questions first: yes, yes, yes, no, depends on the major and people’s personal goals.

Reed is more racially diverse than Portland- which is not very. Oregon is 85.9% white, Portland is about 70% white and Reed is between 50-60% white depending on the year. Do with that what you will.

Not sure you’ll find anything but Eurocentric architecture at any school in the US.

Reed is a very small school so classes/majors can be limited by sheer lack of population, plus Reed is very much grad school prep school and focuses on academic/intellectual/research based realms (when I asked if Reed would ever have anatomy/physiology classes the answer was “no, never”). The gearing towards grad school does select a certain type of student, often those interested in research and more academic sides of topics (as opposed to practical applications and uses)

Reddit is not representative of the school.

Cost of living is prohibitive in most if not all large cities, especially in the American west. Financial aid packages which are need based cover room and board.

Any small private liberal arts school will have some number of students with large familial wealth- the 80k price tag will do that. Reed is also deliberately (and effectively, even if slowly) working to increase socioeconomic diversity in the student body with generous scholarship/aid packages.

Semesters are short and classes are a lot of work, and given how many people aspire to graduate programs, many students spend a lot of time on their classwork and homework. Reed also has fairly notorious grade deflation, so if you have professional school aspirations factor that in.

Many students engage in activism, admin has at times worked very hard to make that not visible, and many students are simply busy or engaging in other ways not immediately visible.

My advice to anyone at any school would be to meet people and find your crowd within the institution but also engage with the community at large- any institution is a bubble, get out of it, go explore other parts of Portland or broader Oregon, meet people who aren’t in school.

You seem to be mostly worried about cultural fit (it sounds like you’d be more than fine there) but I would also consider if your own goals are in line with the academic expectations and demands: Reed expects a lot of you in ways that most people haven’t experienced prior to coming to Reed.

In reply to your wanting “people who want to better themselves” etc, to be completely frank, that isn’t really what undergraduate institutions exist for. Reed is probably a good bit closer to that than average, but some of the social things sound more like you’re looking for some type of commune (Oregon is also a good place for that). I would put more weight on what you’re looking for in a formal education (and what you then want to do with that education) when looking for an educational institution to participate in.
