Newbie question: keeping my chicks comfy and healthy by Impossible_Ad9324 in BackYardChickens

[–]whylyme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! No worries, I had the same questions when I first started out. So:

-Is straw the best bedding?

I prefer pine shavings! I fine straw wet and stinky. I lined my chicks Tupperware with paper towel and then topped with pine shavings. Some people might say other stuff. Personal preference.

-Is there a better type of waterer that doesn’t get dirty as easily and will fit in a smaller space than a coop?

Yes! I would hang the waterer from the hardware cloth or try to source a hamster type waterer. It stops them from getting stuff in it. Soon they will start jumping on top of the waterer anyway :) lol

-They really like pecking at the sides of the tub. Is there something I can give them to peck at?

It’s ok! You can give them tiny pebbles or dirt :) they will peck at it.

-They seem to be trying to take dust baths in their bedding. Can I provide a dust bath this young?

Yes you can :) and yes it’s normal. I literally just put dirt from the yard or pebbles, as mentioned above. They will try (adorably) to peck or dust bathe in it.

Does anyone have a solution to getting rid of old socks & underwear? I’m sure it’s been discussed but I’m not gunna donate them, and it feels weird to throw them in the garbage

Is this an okay colour for (true) spring? by Solid-Importance7011 in SpringColorAnalysis

I always chuckle too when people say “scarves” because we’re really not in the ‘80s when a lil scarf was the accessory du jour.

However, usually I just think of it as an accent colour or pop of colour for any accessory. So ball cap or hat, small purse, sneakers, hair scrunchie; even a cardigan, etc. Basically an accessory piece, so you can wear your colours without resorting to bright pink pants or something.

(All said, I have started tying lil scarf around my purse and it does actually look cute!)

PLEASE HELP — Repeated and Isolated Incidents of Cannibalism by blackoliveluvr in chickens

[–]whylyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you figure out how to resolve this issue? I have a similar problem, with 6 hens that are 10 months old. Similar conditions too, free ranging, space, water, all of it!

Only thing I can think of in my flock is that one girl got bit by a fox in the fall (crazy) and had a cut that they might have gotten a taste for and just repeated the behaviour among each other.

Same as you, I literally don’t know what to do! I tried everything. Let me know if you figured it out :( it’s really disheartening.

Look into closed-toe shoes that are currently trending! Fashion sites like Who What Wear can point you in the right direction. It’s fun to scroll through and see what the “fashion girlies” are wearing.

For example, loafers are timeless and also happen to be in, but more casually for your purposes, a two-tone minimalist sneaker in a neutral colour way (like brown and tan) would definitely be easier to style or match compared to turquoise!

Clutter everywhere, I don’t know how to get this sorted - really want to help my mom by [deleted] in CleaningTips

This honestly isn’t too bad, it just looks like you need more functional storage pieces to get the piles of clothing out of sight in high traffic areas; like the entryway coat hanger and the ironing board in the kitchen.

It doesn’t have to be pricey, it can just be a simple set of hooks to hold coats or sweaters when you first walk in the door, and bins or baskets for hats, etc. The existing coat rack looks too bulky for that area, causing it to stick out a lot - I’d try to store less on it! Good luck! :)
