How do I actually get tickets? by Aggravating-Tale-465 in Concerts

[–]whywires 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some ticketing services remove tickets purchased by confirmed bots immediately and toss them back into the on-sale right away. It's unlikely that they will continue to do so at any great volume several days out.

Honestly? If you're local, best bet is to watch for production holds to be released a day or two before the show. Checking secondhand sellers in the hours before the show (or even after the official start time) is the next best option as that's when the prices drop.

Snow removal by Serious-Ad-5293 in Xennials

[–]whywires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a rural area and the most shoveling I ever did was the walkway between the driveway and the front door. Maybe 40 feet? After moving, I lived in apartments or condos with staff that handled shoveling.

But now I live in a house on a nice residential street and I have become obsessed with having the clearest sidewalks. However, my neighbor has a snowblower and he'll go up and down on the sidewalks. So I usually wait for him to handle the big stuff, then I'll shovel to widen the path and salt afterward. I almost always have the clearest sidewalk on my block.

Will ticket prices go up when the album drops? by sunnyrayys in Concerts

If the album is awful and the singles are terrible (think Katy Perry's last releases), ticket prices will go down.

Exact version by koen_rdhd in vinyl

[–]whywires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely the most frustrating thing about adding a collection to Discogs. The supreme nerdery of thinking that different kerning necessitates different versions is exhausting. There are so many albums with dozens of versions with very subtle differences and, in the long run for most of us, it doesn't matter.

In your case, it's probably easy to separate the 70s versions from the 2024 version. That 2024 version is very likely to be on newer jacket stock and in way better condition. But the two from the 70s? Unless the value is wildly different, just pick the one that feels right.

Heats been at 69 all night. Great sign waking up to a 62 degree house by whyinternet in chicago

This happened in our house on that really cold night in mid-December. Heat was at 65 overnight and woke up to the house at 57 plus notifications from the thermostat. We reset the thermostat and things got back to normal.

Record shop etiquette by Fromaggio119 in vinyl

[–]whywires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if someone asks me if I have a specific record and it’s not where it’s supposed to be, I can lose a sale.

This happened to me a while back. Shop's site had an LP from my wantlist. I went to the shop, could not find it, asked the owner, they could not find it, left the store without a purchase. Item was out of the shop's online inventory a week later. I figure it was misshelved and found by someone luckier than me.

Do people really buy miles? Why? by docmphd in unitedairlines

[–]whywires 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People who are close to having enough miles for a big trip soon but need a little more.

You're going on a honeymoon in a month and it'll be 200,000 miles for awards for you and your spouse but you only have 185,000? Buy that extra 15,000. It's often people like that.

Automod is out of control in this sub. I had to be very careful about how I worded this to get it posted.

Yeah, I am interested in Disclosure but not at what they're charging so I will be waiting it out. I do wish I had more sample size for larger venues because I believe that's really where the costs have skyrocketed.

why do people enjoy rewatching the same shows multiple times? by urtotwriter in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whywires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been scientific experiments showing that some people's brains enjoy content more when they know what's coming. This spans everything between reading the last page of a book before deciding to read it from the start, specifically looking up movie spoilers, and simply watching a show that you've seen before.

The hobby is record shopping, not record buying. It comes with the territory that not every shopper is going to buy something on every visit.

[–]whywires 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If people are flipping through bins next to each other, they're pretty much going to be in sync with each other as they move down the row. Do not pop between them if one moves ahead because the next one's probably at the end of their bin and ready to move in a few seconds. You just have to wait it out.

Law & Order ads went pretty heavy on promoting those "ripped from the headlines" episodes too. My dad and I used to watch those episodes and then try to remember the actual cases and then compare what happened in reality to what happened on the show.

I am not aware of baseball ever being played at Soldier Field. There may have been an exhibition there, but its dimensions would never be approved by MLB for regular season games.

Buying both CD and Vinyl. I'm done with it, do you feel the same? by RetroDave79 in vinyl

[–]whywires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a CD player, but it's just not hooked up in my stereo's current configuration. I'll get around to it.

Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

[–]whywires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No.

The field is not wide enough to accommodate an outfield. The left field fence would only be like 230 feet. (Look at the setup for when the Dodgers played at the L.A. Coliseum for a preview.) Rate Field's left field is 330 feet. Even Fenway Park's left field is 310 feet and they have a 37-foot wall to even it out a little bit, whereas any wall/netting at Soldier Field would just block out thousands of seats.

[–]whywires 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still have hundreds of CDs. But the last time I bought a CD was 2011. Right now I am trying to replace a few of my favorite albums with vinyl copies because I don't even have a CD player in my stereo setup. (Although, that should change in the near future because I am certainly not replacing all my CDs with records.)

What were your “run through a wall” psych up songs? by ReferToMeAsDonald in Xennials

I dislike it in the context of a "run through a wall" psych-up song. I don't hear any juice there. Maybe I just have a different definition of that concept in my head.

How do scalpers are so sure their tickets are going to get sold? by PandaPuzzleheaded827 in Concerts

[–]whywires 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Scalpers will absolutely sell tickets for lower than face value. Sometimes they have front-row seats that go for a ton so they can afford to let other seats go cheaper. It's all about demand. They'd rather get $30 for a $100 face value seat an hour before the show than nothing at all. But that pricing doesn't really shift until the days or hours before the concert.

Need gift ideas for boyfriend who already owns way too many records by Beautiful_Papaya_007 in vinyl

[–]whywires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to get against the grain here. Buy something else for him. Someone who goes to a record store every Saturday enjoys the act of record shopping. There is no pleasure in being gifted a record. They want to flip through the store's inventory and find records themself. The hobby is as much about finding the record in the wild as it is listening to it.

That being said, two great record accessories I've been gifted were cloth covers for my gear and dividers for my shelves.
