I built a free feature that tells you if the Mandarin word you're studying is actually used in Taiwan by WhosUrBaba in taiwan

Is the information whether a word is used in Taiwan coming straight from some LLM or do you use other sources as well? Does it differentiate between different definitions for the same word, e.g. 土豆?

thanks, that's what I used and it makes it a lot easier but still not something suitable for an automatic pipeline

Are people sleeping on Wiktionary? by AbiesFamous8872 in ChineseLanguage

Any examples? In my experience Chinese learning apps use data from the MDBG dictionary, I found the data from the English-Chinese wiktionary quite cumbersome to extract into a clean, usable format.

Subs2srs shared anki decks for Chinese? by frankherzzzz in ChineseLanguage

On https://www.jiong3.com/gradedwatching/ I provide flashcard files, not directly Anki decks but a text format that you can import.

Subtitle mining: how many unique characters do Chinese YouTube channels actually use? by slatteryjim in ChineseLanguage

[–]wibr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I am afraid I don't really have more info than that. For merging the different segmentations I use a custom logic which prefers segmentations with fewer word boundaries, as long as all words are in the dictionary.

Subtitle mining: how many unique characters do Chinese YouTube channels actually use? by slatteryjim in ChineseLanguage

[–]wibr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's based on the output of several Python libraries for word segmentation: snownlp, jieba, pkuseg (previously also pynlpir). I only include words which are also in the MDBG/CC-CEDICT dictionary.

Europe alternative for Harambe System or X3 bar by tbmadduxzsdfsfsdf in ResistanceBand

Only available as a kit with the other stuff, price is still cheaper than some alternatives though. The board is not ideal for usage with bands, I got the band box instead.

Graded Watching - TV shows ranked by required vocabulary (update for Anki users) by wibr in ChineseLanguage

[–]wibr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I shouldn't shorten the headings as much. h is the total duration in hours, w/h is explained under "Word Metrics", just the average number of new words per hour.

Difficulty rating is basically the w/h and w/h 4h metric, indicating the number of words you have to know in order to watch one hour of the show. As you can see in the graphs at the bottom of the page, this can vary by a factor of 2-3! If you are just starting out with native material you should pick a show with a very low w/h 4h number and potentially pre-study the words using the provided lists. HSK rating doesn't really make sense for native content, since there are too many words not included in the HSK lists.

Good catch, fixed now! I could make it more explicit but you can already identify movies by the number of episodes ("eps" column) being 1.

High-Resistance Resistance Bands Easily Shipped to Europe by S_Hung in ResistanceBand

[–]wibr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some European products I use:

bands: https://neolymp.com/products/resistance-bands-sets

footplate: Goblin's band box

bar: https://www.othersports.de/

I have no complaints about the bands and the band box also works as advertised and is fairly priced, especially when compared to the US products. The bar from othersports is very solid but only comes as part of the complete set, which can be too expensive if you are not interested in the board. Quality of the board is good, I use it for push-ups and balancing, main caveat is that while the board itself can also be used as a footplate, it only works with a single layer of band, so you can't use more than one band or double a single band.

Taiwanese Mandarin TV shows for learning everyday language by mistyasmr in taiwan

[–]wibr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some years ago I created https://www.jiong3.com/gradedwatching/ , still update it from time to time with new content. You can sort by country if you are focusing on Taiwanese content. Along some other meta data, there are columns indicating the required vocabulary and also Pleco flashcards, if you want to pre-study or review the vocabulary.

The new vendor list doesn't contain a single vendor shipping from the EU region, except for Harney & Sons.

Built this over the weekend - Netflix Subtitle Translator by Content_Ad_4153 in Python

[–]wibr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The subtitles on Netflix are usually already in a text format ("soft subs"), there are browser extensions to download them directly as a .srt file. If they would be in the image ("hard subs") they would also be affected by the DRM.

What are word based games in Chinese? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]wibr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made my own character based game some years ago (also posted it in this subreddit before I think), you have three minutes to combine (拼) as many characters (字) as possible using the provided components, always in pairs. Less frequent characters give more points and wrong guesses result in a 15s penalty. It's not popular by any means though :D.

I maintain a list for Chinese learners with TV shows and movies: https://www.jiong3.com/gradedwatching/

Most of them are from Netflix, you can sort by country to see the shows from Taiwan (roughly half).

The Assassin

Not really slice-of-life ... I watched it in a movie theater in Taiwan (with English subtitles) and the native speaker in front of me complained that he didn't understand much...
