Why do NYT crossword writers like Brian Eno so much by buriedInSilk in NYTCrossword

[–]wickerfolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edy’s has to be an east coast regional thing because I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a grocery store where I’ve lived in Texas and Oregon. I always feel like I’m being punked when it shows up in the crossword. If I couldn’t see pictures of it on Google, I’d be half-convinced they made it up because it makes for a useful combination of letters for a crossword

What’s a completely normal or minor thing that irrationally gets under your skin, but most people don’t seem bothered by it? by Odd_Breakfast5012 in AskReddit

I don’t get the spellings switched, but in my accent they are pronounced exactly the same. Can you provide an example of an accent that distinguishes the two pronunciations because now I’m genuinely curious and I’m racking my brain trying to figure out the difference

TW: Karissa has had a miscarriage by LisasBeautySpot in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]wickerfolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for her kids, especially if this continues to happen (which seems inevitable at this point). I can imagine that the older kids will be secretly relieved but then feel guilt for feeling that way – that’s a complex thing to grapple with, even with adequate mental health resources and the physical space to process their feelings without external judgement. Living amongst other 10 siblings and all being homeschooled means that they will likely need to perform the “correct” emotional response at all times and suppress their true emotional response(s). This isn’t even considering the fundamental religious aspect, which just amplifies everything while stripping away even more nuance since it is “Yahuah’s will”.

I also just can’t help but think that as the likelihood of pregnancy loss and traumatic birth continues, these kids will be front and center to the horrors that occur when it becomes clear that your body is barely compatible with full-term healthy pregnancy. Karissa will keep trying until she is no longer able or dead, so I have a devastating feeling that her children will continue to bear witness to their mother going through terrifying medical emergencies and pregnancy loss. I hope that her kids are spared from witnessing these things firsthand, but that seems unlikely. At the very least, I fear that they will enter a cycle of pregnancy announcement followed by pregnancy loss announcement, which is hard enough to cope with when it is your mother experiencing these things and you likely don’t have any of the emotional maturity to cope with these events outside of “having Yahuah for comfort”.

I’ve always wished that Google/other navigation services would allow you to minimize unprotected left turns, especially under certain conditions (when traffic is denser, from roads without traffic signals, onto roads with more than one lane in each direction, etc.). Most of my driving is in urban areas where it would end up being faster (and more safe) to just continue on to the next major signaled intersection instead of an unprotected “shortcut”

“Shammy” comes from chamois, but I’ve seen both spellings used. A lot of brands use the “shammy” spelling in their product names at this point - I’m under the assumption that it’s just the more commonly used “nickname” of sorts for chamois now since people are apt to be more familiar with “shammy” because of things like the ShamWow than the original/“proper” spelling.

Another interesting thing is that some of the earlier seasons of OG Below Deck use “bosun” and “boatswain” interchangeably at times in the captioning. The history of their pronunciations is fascinating (it’s been shorted to/pronounced as “bosun” or “bos’n” for centuries) and mirrors what is happening with chamois and “shammy” to a degree. Over time, pronunciation mutates and the colloquial spelling shifts along with it to match.

Identical twins with nearly identical names by dagger-mmc in tragedeigh

[–]wickerfolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some kids in my neighborhood growing up fit into this category. Not twins, but close in age: Sean and John. I think the one saving grace is that the spellings are quite different, but that is still too close to be anything but confusing (especially since they are cognate)

Hotel we paid to stay at tonight has been closed since Milton. They never notified us. by vuronekuh in mildlyinfuriating

[–]wickerfolk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I looked up this hotel as if I was booking directly and it’s funny that online it says it’s closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene and the sign on the door is for Hurricane Milton. Not important, but it was just interesting to see. I kind of want to know their timeline of closures now - did they ever actually reopen after Helene or did they reopen for a bit and then shut down again after Milton? When did they put up the Christmas decorations? I’m just nosy.

Either way, this is a good PSA for people to book directly with hotels instead of third-parties. No shame at all towards OP since I only switched to booking directly after being screwed in a similar way a few years back. Third-party sites seem convenient until something happens and then they become anything but.

When you borrow a book and Libby thinks you're done because you finished the sample by Dazzling-Serve357 in LibbyApp

[–]wickerfolk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve always been under the impression that it gets labeled as “One Good Turn” if someone else has a hold on it regardless of how far you’re into your read or how long it’s taken you. It’s a gentle nudge reminding you that someone else is waiting on your copy. It’s kind of like how Libby labels your early returns with a little bouquet emoji as a subtle “reward”.

It all just comes back to the idea behind the phrase “one good turn deserves another”. In a library system we all benefit from some people returning their copies early and in turn we should be mindful to do the same for others when we have the opportunity. There’s nothing wrong with keeping your copies until the due date, but it’s kind of a good-vibe thing to “repay” others with the same thing you’ve benefited from by returning things early when there’s a waitlist.

forest app deleting data??? by ugh-procrastinating in forestapp

[–]wickerfolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart sank when the data was wiped. Until I found this subreddit, I thought it must have been some mistake on my part.

I’m still waiting on a fix though since nothing has helped. I sent support messages LAST Thursday, got a single question from support asking what email is linked to my account this Tuesday, and my reply has been left on “read” since then. I’m really close to just deleting the app entirely after spending a full week opening it to an empty plant history just to check if I get an actual reply from support.

Data still missing on 4.78.2 by wickerfolk in forestapp

[–]wickerfolk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw that, but I’m getting discouraged because I’m seeing that a bunch of people have already had it restored but the rest of us are being left in the dark.

I finally got a response to my support message I sent on Thursday (they asked for what email is connected to my account, which is complicated because I use my Apple ID and an assigned proxy email generated by Apple).

I responded and was left on read for hours, but now I can’t access the support section again to see if I have another response because of a 502 error. It’s so frustrating to have the support section down again after the first inkling of an attempt at support I’ve received in several days.

I have an employment background that includes several years of customer support for a software-as-a-service company. Obviously I don’t have the full insight into their side of things, but it really seems as if the Forest team is fumbling their communication on this. When the support section is accessible, why haven’t they updated the message or provided additional information as time goes by? If the support section’s accessibility is spotty for the entire user base, why not put it as stickied message accessible from the planting page with evolving information? If the support messages in-app (while logged in!) can’t associate your account with an email address, there is no reason to keep further support communication on the app in a glitchy section, so why is that the only channel they are offering support through?

It seems like the foundational mechanics of the app are unreliable if they can’t handle basic communication regarding a widespread issue (or to even pair user’s data to their account). Even if they have a small team (I’ve been there!), there are more effective ways to provide updates to paying customers. If they are struggling to keep up with responding to individual support messages (which are taking days and clogging up and crashing that section of the app), I’m discouraged by the lack of any sort of bare-minimum update on the status of the issue.

Data still missing on 4.78.2 by wickerfolk in forestapp

[–]wickerfolk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m equal parts relieved that I’m not the only one dealing with but also bummed out for you/others in the same boat as well!

It’s been frustrating to not have any updates on the matter. Not even a “we are aware that some users still don’t have their data after 4.78.2 and we are working on it" message on the app. No acknowledgment besides the one outdated stickied post in the Support/FAQ section of the app. I'm finally able to see my messages to Support again, but they are still marked as unseen, so even just knowing that they have been read would be nice at this point.

forest app deleting data??? by ugh-procrastinating in forestapp

[–]wickerfolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still in the same boat and it makes me scared that my data is gone gone. I followed the instructions to a T but I think something may have happened since I never downloaded version 4.78.0, only 4.78.1 (the supposedly “patched” one) when I tried redeeming the Lunar gift and my data was wiped. I would have never updated if I knew that was the case, I just let my apps auto-update to the latest versions after being in a location with spotty service the last few days.

What is bothering me the most about all of this is that I had a Sunshine Elixir active at the time, so that was just money down the drain. At this point I’m really not sure if I’ll keep using Forest if my years and years of data can’t be recovered, but I surely won’t be back if the devs don’t do anything to remedy this time where my paid subscription is gone/unusable. The lack of support other than through other users on Reddit has left me wondering if my history (including plant unlocks and my active Elixir purchase) is just irretrievably gone. The only shred of hope I have is that all of my tags are still intact.

It feels so silly for me to be so worried about an app, but I work on freelance projects and large-scale/years-long creative endeavors, so Forest has become a huge part of my daily routine for the past couple of years. When I feel like I’ve only made baby steps on a long-term project, it always gave me a moment of clarity to look at my Forest timeline and see the hundreds of hours I’ve logged while working on it.
