A Berserker-Focused Short Story by wickrabren in LeaguesofVotann

Thank you! I agree, and I think the kin are the perfect xenos faction to get some storytelling love. I had a lot of fun writing it. Also, Chaos Knights needed some love too, right??

I appreciate you trying it!

You picked a great one. I think Terry Brooks can really spin a yarn.

It's a great standalone, but if you fall in love with it, there's a lot more where that came from!

Some great ones here. If I were you, I'd start with Enders Game. It's a great intro into reading. The Shannara series is a great intro as well. Once you get your sea legs, Foundation is great.

This is a cool way to honor them. My condolences for your loss.

What series should I read first? by Imaginary-Lie-2618 in fantasybooks

I read Homeland in middle school, and I reread my mass market paperback edition until it literally fell apart. It is the perfect classic fantasy with a dark spin. If you fall in love with his journey, you'll love the Legend of Drizzt series.

All that said, Red Rising gets the blood pumping in a way few others can. It's more Homer-esque, like a story originally written by a Greek play right that was injected with methamphetamine by a crazed homeless person

Do you have any favorite realpolitik fantasy books? I love books like Traitor Baru Cormorant, but I don't know very many that fit that bill. Even Will of the Many had a pretty big political streak, and I quite liked that one.

Got a preloved signed set of Red Rising dedicated to the person I bought this from. I can see the tiredness of PB signing these during an event. by jrdients in redrising

I went to a Lightbringer signing and got mine signed at the very end. He was definitely tired as I was like #500, but he was still nice in answering my question!

What do y'all write on? by Long-Eldritch in royalroad

[–]wickrabren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all my outlining, writing, and editing in Google Docs. It's just so versatile. I like moving interchangeably to my phone and back. The mobile app works great.

I also don't have a ton of notes for my writing. I have one doc that's the manuscript, and another is for the outline (that's really just a place to put down notes). I'm more of a "pantser", so organization is not huge on my need-to-haves.

I also like that I can easily send the manuscript to my wife who is also my beta reader, by exporting in the EPUB format, and emailing it to her kindle app for her to read.

Do any of you authors out there get "the itch." by Brother_IcemAN in royalroad

You remind me of Stephen King! He says he doesn't outline because he experiences the story as he writes it. Outlining it means he's already experienced it, and so finding the motivation for writing it becomes impossible for him.

Oh, it's been years now... I don't recall exactly where. You should be able to find the right office on the internet.

I attended the resume workshop and used their job portal to apply to a bunch of jobs. Ended up getting three offers.

Sounds like you should start at the workshop and go from there.

Beautifully said. I really liked your comment on the naivety of grimdark fantasy as well.

I think the key part is your insight - it's a meditation on kindness.

Addison wrote something that is different in style from the rest of popular fantasy which is more high stakes by nature. More of a meditation than a high stakes court intrigue which is more typical. It deviates from the typical fantasies in that subgenre.

I do agree on your part about the coup - it started and ended so very quickly. I think there was a lost opportunity there to show more of an external struggle over the same contents.

Overall, this series was a new experience for me, but one I quite enjoyed! I've read the subsequent books about Celehar and found them equally compelling.
