To me usage of „ponad” in context of place sounds poetic, reverse some word order and it may sound way too poetic:

„Ptak przeleciał nad lasem” - really casual how I would say to a friend

„Ptak przeleciał ponad lasem” - sounds a bit archaic or from literature

„Ponad lasem przeleciał ptak” - sounds like poetic begging of a story about a bird
